Background: Eskom Puts Nuclear Plant on Hold
South Africa's state power company, which has been forced to ration electricity to mines and smelters, Friday shelved plans to build the country's second nuclear power station, saying it can't afford to make the investment.
The government said the planned project wasn't affordable for Eskom Holdings Ltd., particularly in light of the global financial crisis. However, it said the country remained committed to nuclear energy.
