How many executions will there be in the US in 2009?

Background: Data released on December 11 by the Death Penalty Information Center reported that there have been 37 executions so far in 2008, with no more expected by the end of the year. That's down 12% from 2007 and 30% from 2006.
Part of the reason for this year's lower total may have been delays while the Supreme Court was considering issues regarding lethal injections.
But, nonetheless, this year's total is the lowest since 1994.

So, will the death chambers be busier in 2009? Or will the decline in executions continue?

There are 24 more currently scheduled for 2009, with stays possible in some of the cases. Plus there may be more added to the list as the year progresses.

An inmate declared his innocence Thursday after he was forcibly carried into Virginia's death chamber, where he was executed for gunning down a police officer.

"Edward Nathaniel Bell,'s case is an example of how the system does not catch and correct errors,"

Bell was the 103rd Virginia inmate executed since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976. Virginia ranks second only to Texas in the number of executions since then.

don't know if these are credible sources, but so far 37 in 2009. first link has at least 16 more scheduled.

Marek also becomes the 37th condemned inmate to be put to death this year in the USA and the 1173rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
