I've sent an email to the question's creator in effort of clarifying the time frame for this and possible settlement sources, with rankings.

Do they need to be champs in both forms at the same time to settle as yes?

It might be helpful for some of the Aussies/Kiwis/Indians to pitch in here to help answer...I'd say that the way the question is worded would suggest that it should be simultaneous champs for ODI and Test. But I'm not sure if that is in line with the current odds - what do you think?

The question is pretty specific IMO. "in both ODI and test cricket" doesn't leave much wiggle room as to which forms of the game should be included.

As for the starting odds, anything less that 95% in favour of Australia is just pure insanity!1 (Me? Biased? NEVER!!! 8:] )

Seriously though, I think the starting odds of 50% was probably on the high end of things. (It's getting a bit late for me to even try to work things out 8:]) A guesstimate would be the current odds are about right especially if you take the 15% rule into consideraton.

I wonder if pitchedoutsideleg is about...

thanks oppugner...still wondering about whether they need to be number 1 simultaneously, or just hit number 1 for both test and ODI (not necessarily at the same time) this year.

Ps - re the 95% in favour of Australia comment ... have you been watching their ODIs lately????? they better pick up their form against the kiwis or I'm going to be losing lots of hubbucks!

My reading was definitely that it had to happen at the same time, but then i got burned recently for assuming something on another question so i thought i'd clarify. And i agree, for that the starting odds looked a bit high. Its all academic now anyway, with the kiwis becoming an unstoppable force there is little chance of india picking up either title this year!

@tisha - reading the question again after a bit of sleep I'm coming down on the side of both simultaneously.

And as far as our cousins across the ditch are concerned, well, we have to let them save a bit of face before reminding them where their place is. 8:]

Wots the 15% rule?

haha - too funny guys (i'm imagining cookietime saying 'unstoppable force' in his little kiwi accent!). This question is now in the hands of trusty cat ed mrperfkt so i'm sure he'll be making the clarification within a few days.

ps - the 15% rule is that we give odds 15% leeway on either side before we'll void for bad odds

After looking at the question and comments, I think it's best to keep the question as being #1 in both, simultaneously to settle as Yes.

I don't fully understand how the points are allocated, but India aren't far off the top at either now, and they're about to whup us in the tests by the looks of it, so it could be a possibility. Of course we've been rubbish at tests for so long that they possibly don't give out many points for beating us...

I hope India be the top-ranked team in both ODI and test cricket in 2009. Good Luck http://www.vcricket.com

India are now getting very close in both. However, as noted above by someone they don't actually play any more tests this year. But who knows how those rankings are calculated - some bad performances by South Africa against England might give them a chance, if their ODI form is good.

This article seems to say that if you lose a test to a lower ranked team then you lose points, so I'd agree, its definitely still possible even if India don't play any more tests...altho sri lanka are ahead of them now and will go further ahead once they finish us off today, so if they don't play any more this year then it can't happen...

okay last comment - future tours on cricinfo doesn't seem to show any more tests for either sri lanka or india, which (I think) means as long as Sri Lanka do beat NZ today, they'll finish in front of India for the year...I'll try a settlement request once they polish us off...
