Will Diane Feinstein run for Governor of California in 2010?
Background: At age 75, facing perhaps the last big political decision of her decades-long career, Feinstein finds herself in a familiar place: crosswise with members of her own party and enveloped in a swirl of will-she-or-won't-she speculation about mounting another run for governor. The choice is not easy. Feinstein has long dreamed of holding the state's top job, and if she runs in 2010, she would be the instant front-runner. But running, and winning, would mean walking away from the chairmanship of the Senate Intelligence Committee -- a job never before held by a woman -- and giving up more clout than she has ever enjoyed on Capitol Hill. Feinstein insists that the looming decision has nothing to do with her recent clashes. And those who know her well agree that she is following a path set long ago. (LA TIMES)

<quote>But Feinstein remains the biggest question mark in the field. Despite taking a high-visibility post in January as the first woman to head the Senate Intelligence Committee, she has refused to rule out a run for governor.
"Sen. Feinstein will make her decision at the appropriate time," said Gil Duran, her spokesman. Political insiders say that could be late this year or the first part of 2010.
"People have to be comfortable with candidates, and they're comfortable with Dianne Feinstein," said Mark DiCamillo, director of the Field Poll.
She leads the early polling with 38 percent backing among Democratic primary voters, well ahead of Brown and Villaraigosa, each with 16 percent, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom with 10 percent and Lt. Gov. John Garamendi with 4 percent.
Among all voters, 57 percent have a favorable opinion of Feinstein, and 34 percent view her unfavorably. Her popularity soars to 78 percent among Democrats.</quote>
