Will the RBA alter the cash rate outside of their normal meeting schedule during 2009?
Background: The RBA board meets on the first Tuesday of each month (except January) where it makes a decision on what change, if any, it will make to the Cash Rate. While it is common for a rate change to be announced after one of these meetings, as far as I can tell the RBA Board has never changed the rate outside of this monthly schedule in the past 25 years.
Press reports during December '08 and January of this year did indicate a willingness by the Board to make a rate change outside of the normal pattern if circumstances warranted such action.
With the global economic turmoil set to continue, the Australian economy looking at a recession and our major trading partners coping with an economic battering, will the RBA alter the cash rate other than as a result of one of their scheduled meetings during 2009?
2009 Meetings are
March 3
April 7
May 5
June 2
July 7
August 4
September 1
October 6
November 3
December 1
