Will Roland Burris keep his Senate seat until July 31?
Looks like Burris might be investigated for perjury in connection to the testimony he gave at Blago's Illinois House impeachment hearings. Burris now claims that he talked to Blago's brother before the Senate appointment about campaign fundraising help, which he previously did not include when asked about contact with the governor.
If Burris loses his Senate seat in any way (including resigning, dying, removal from office, etc.) before or on July 31st 2009, this question will settle as NO.

“Right now, Illinois law lets Burris serve until January 2011. The legislation would have ended his appointment and set up a spring election to pick a new senator.”

“Over Republican objections, Democrats who run the Illinois Senate defeated legislation today that would have allowed for a special election to replace appointed Democratic U.S. Sen. Roland Burris before his term ends in January 2011.”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Roland Burris now acknowledges attempting to raise money for ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich — an explosive twist in his ever-changing story on how he landed a coveted Senate appointment from the man accused of trying to sell the seat. Burris made the admission to reporters on Monday, after releasing an affidavit over the weekend saying he had more contact with Blagojevich aides about the Senate seat than he had described under oath to the state House panel that recommended Blagojevich's impeachment. The Democrat also said in the affidavit, but not before the panel, that the governor's brother asked him for fundraising help.
Though Burris insists he never raised money for Blagojevich while the governor was considering whom to appoint to the seat President Barack Obama vacated, the revelation that he had attempted to do so is likely to increase calls for Burris' resignation and an investigation into whether he committed perjury before the panel. Illinois Democrats have forwarded documents related to Burris' testimony to a county prosecutor for review. Burris would not answer questions Tuesday in Peoria about his attempts to raise funds for Blagojevich, but said he didn't do anything wrong and encouraged officials to look into the matter. "I welcome the opportunity to go before any and all investigative bodies, including those referred by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Senate ethics committee to answer any questions they have," he told reporters Tuesday. After an event Monday night in Peoria, Burris told reporters that he had reached out to friends after Blagojevich's brother, Robert, called him before President Barack Obama's election asking him to raise $10,000 or $15,000 for the governor.

U.S. Senator Roland Burris’s statements to Illinois lawmakers concerning how he gained his appointment to that post have been referred to a state prosecutor for review. Burris, who was appointed by now-former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich a month before the two-term Democrat was removed from office, has been accused by state lawmakers of changing his story as he told it in two affidavits and in testimony Jan. 8 before a state House of Representatives panel then considering impeachment charges.
“The matter is under review by this office,” John Schmidt, the Sangamon County, Illinois, state’s attorney, said today acknowledging his receipt of the Burris statements from Illinois House speaker Michael Madigan.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has called on Senator Roland Burris to resign and for his seat to be filled by a special election.
"I think Roland Burris should step aside and resign," Quinn said at a news conference late Friday morning. "The best thing for Illinois-- the people he loves--is to step aside." Quinn said the latest questions about Burris' contacts with impeached former Gov. Rod Blagojevich have placed "a cloud over [Burris'] head."
"I think it was mistaken to accept the appointment under the cloud [under which] it was received. ... I think the ongoing controversy, all the different affidavits correcting this and that, underline the importance of stepping aside." Quinn said he supports a House bill that calls for a new Senator to be elected within 115 days of a vacancy. In the interim, Quinn said he should be able to appoint a temporary replacement who would not seek reelection or in any way campaign for another term.
Quinn urged Burris, whom he called "honorable" and a good friend, to step down as quickly as possible for the good of the state and the country. "This should not be a matter that takes weeks. ... The common good is really what we need to focus on in Illinois today. The office does not belong to the officeholder." Quinn said he wished the Senate had never allowed Burris' appointment and reiterated his earlier claims that Burris should never have accepted the appointment because of the taint surrounding former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
