Will Senator Roland Burris keep his senate seat until the next election on Nov 2nd, 2010?

Background: Sen. Roland Burris admitted in a document released Saturday that former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's brother asked him for campaign fundraising help before the governor appointed Burris to the Senate.

The disclosure is at odds with Burris' testimony in January when an Illinois House impeachment committee specifically asked if he had ever spoken to Robert Blagojevich or other aides to the now-deposed governor about the Senate seat vacated by Barack Obama.

State Rep. Jim Durkin, the impeachment committee's ranking Republican, told The Associated Press that he and House Republican Leader Tom Cross will ask Sunday for an outside investigation into whether Burris perjured himself.

Burris issued a statement Saturday saying he voluntarily gave the committee a Feb. 4 affidavit disclosing the contact with Robert Blagojevich because "there were several facts that I was not given the opportunity to make during my testimony to the impeachment committee."

Burris is lying. I heard his speech accepting the appointment live, and he was asked a question about a seventeen thousand dollar contribution he made to the gov's campaign fund, and at the end of that article he says he never gave or raised any money for Blago. Nothing but lies, the only real question is will he be able to hold on to the seat until the election, or if he can be removed within some reasonable amount of time.

Hurray for IL, my home state with one senator...... STILL.

Burris tried to raise funds for Blagojevich
By John O'Conner | Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — U.S. Sen. Roland Burris now acknowledges attempting to raise money for ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich — an explosive twist in his ever-changing story on how he landed a coveted Senate appointment from the man accused of trying to sell the seat. Burris made the admission to reporters on Monday, after releasing an affidavit over the weekend saying he had more contact with Blagojevich aides about the Senate seat than he had described under oath to the state House panel that recommended Blagojevich's impeachment. The Democrat also said in the affidavit, but not before the panel, that the governor's brother asked him for fundraising help.

Though Burris insists he never raised money for Blagojevich while the governor was considering whom to appoint to the seat President Barack Obama vacated, the revelation that he had attempted to do so is likely to increase calls for Burris' resignation and an investigation into whether he committed perjury before the panel. Illinois Democrats have forwarded documents related to Burris' testimony to a county prosecutor for review. Burris would not answer questions Tuesday in Peoria about his attempts to raise funds for Blagojevich, but said he didn't do anything wrong and encouraged officials to look into the matter. "I welcome the opportunity to go before any and all investigative bodies, including those referred by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and the Senate ethics committee to answer any questions they have," he told reporters Tuesday. After an event Monday night in Peoria, Burris told reporters that he had reached out to friends after Blagojevich's brother, Robert, called him before President Barack Obama's election asking him to raise $10,000 or $15,000 for the governor.

Governor Quinn Calls On Burris To Resign
By Ben Goldberger | The Huffington Post
February 20, 2009

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has called on Senator Roland Burris to resign and for his seat to be filled by a special election.
"I think Roland Burris should step aside and resign," Quinn said at a news conference late Friday morning. "The best thing for Illinois-- the people he loves--is to step aside." Quinn said the latest questions about Burris' contacts with impeached former Gov. Rod Blagojevich have placed "a cloud over [Burris'] head."

"I think it was mistaken to accept the appointment under the cloud [under which] it was received. ... I think the ongoing controversy, all the different affidavits correcting this and that, underline the importance of stepping aside." Quinn said he supports a House bill that calls for a new Senator to be elected within 115 days of a vacancy. In the interim, Quinn said he should be able to appoint a temporary replacement who would not seek reelection or in any way campaign for another term.

Quinn urged Burris, whom he called "honorable" and a good friend, to step down as quickly as possible for the good of the state and the country. "This should not be a matter that takes weeks. ... The common good is really what we need to focus on in Illinois today. The office does not belong to the officeholder." Quinn said he wished the Senate had never allowed Burris' appointment and reiterated his earlier claims that Burris should never have accepted the appointment because of the taint surrounding former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

February 25, 2009 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) -- Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the General Assembly can constitutionally pass a law that moves up the date of the next election for President Barack Obama's former Senate seat.

State Republicans sought Madigan's opinion, issued Wednesday night, which comes as controversy swirls around Sen. Roland Burris' appointment.

Voters are scheduled to vote for Obama's successor in a February 2010 primary and November 2010 general election. But the GOP wants a May 26 election -- effectively kicking Burris out of he doesn't win.

Madigan says neither the U.S. Constitution nor the Illinois Constitution would prohibit moving up the election. In her opinion, the 17th Amendment shows a "clear preference" for Senators to be chosen by direct popular election.
