Will The OEDILF reach 65,000 approved limericks in 2009?

Background: The OEDILF (Omnificent English Dictionary In Limerick Form) is an international writing project with the stated--and admittedly farfetchingly-odd--goal of gathering at least one limerick for each meaning of each and every word in the English language.

The site--originally to be called the Oxford English Dictionary In Limerick Form until that publication's legal department politely requested they change their name--was launched in August of 2004, and has to date received more than 61,000 limerick submissions, of which more than 51,000 have been approved following an often-lengthy workshopping and editorial process.

In honor of the quickly-approaching St. Patrick's Day--a celebration of one of the most well-known patron saints in Ireland, birthplace of the limerick poem--this market asks whether 65,000 approved limericks will be in The OEDILF's database by the end of 2009.

We at Hubdub get nervous and sweat
Over dollars we chance, then regret.
We accept how we feel--
But those dollars aren't real.
Will we wager more of 'em? You bet!

(Creator's disclaimer: as a member of the editorial staff at the OEDILF, I'll take no position in this market.)

Oh Gawd, I want to be more but I only had 95 bettable bucks! So now I'm down to 45 till my winnings (hopefully) are released.

Love your HD limerick, sqlman.

Gotta ask though....HOW did you wind up on a limerick editing board?

Yeah, sqlman, what's the story there?

Also, since you guys have taken 4 1/2 years to nail 51k limericks, will you all be working overtime to TRY to reach this 65k goal in March?

Huh...where' I get the idea this would happen by St. Patty's day? You've got 9 months...that's enough time to do this AND knock Nadya Suleman up and meet your new kid(s).

Ha! I ran across The OEDILF on BoingBoing in spring of '05, and have been writing for them since; I've got more than 500 approved limericks myself (which is nowhere near a record there; one woman there has about ten times as many). I guess I hung around long enough that they decided to make me an associate editor...great practice for this job. :)

C2R: the number of approved limericks keeps snowballing. Anyone with 20 or more becomes a workshopping editor able to help with the approval process for the limericks of others; the more workshopping editors, the faster limericks can be approved, so the more editors there are, and so on, and so forth. (FWIW, with very few exceptions, all the approved limericks so far are in the alphabetical range Aa- through Dh-; the project has a long way to go before completion.)
