When will UK Unemployment reach 2,500,000?
Background: According to labour market statistics released on February 2009, there were 1.97 million people out of work in the UK. The Dec report showed 1.86 mil (reflecting Oct), January was up to 1.92 (this reflects Nov numbers).
The unemployment rate was 6.3 per cent in the three months to December 2008, up 0.4 percentage points from the three months to September 2008 and up 1.1 percentage points from a year earlier. In the early and mid 90s, the rate was over 10% with more than 3 million people out of work, so we may have a way to go in this round…..
There is no guarantee that the pace will stay the same; the economy is clearly continuing to get worse. On the other hand, governments are doing what they can to stem the tide.
Commentators, including one member of the Monetary Policy Committee believe the ILO number will reach 3million once more in 2009.
So, the question is: When will UK unemployment reach 2.5 million as reported by the Office of National Statistics?
Please note: The dates referred to below are the dates of first announcement of the number - not the survey date.
