Will the .eco top level domain name be approved by ICANN?

Background: Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection has joined a group applying for the ".eco" World Wide Web.

Gore's alliance has formed a partnership with the environmentalists heading Dot Eco Ltd, which is applying to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers for the rights to the generic top-level domain associated with the environment, the equivalent of ".org" or ".com" in Internet infrastructure.

.eco will be established for individuals to express their support for environmental causes, for companies to promote their environmental initiatives, and for environmental organizations to maintain their websites in a namespace that is more relevant to their core missions. By charter, a majority of the profits of the .eco initiative will be distributed to support environmental causes.

@ Tisha -- Is there any way we could get a more specific suspend date for this question? Ambiguity in the settlement details could see the current suspend date (12/31/09) extend into mid-2010 which could significantly alter the probabilities and outcome of this question.

Thanks a million for all your hard work on Hubdub Tisha! :-)

Thanks lola ;-)

I've managed to get a more specific time frame for this question, but unfortunately it has officially pushed the suspend date out even further - both these news articles state that a decision is expected 'sometime next year' which means that this question will likely run into 2010. I've removed the line about settling in the case of no news, because it has now become quite a signficant story and I'm sure the outcome will be reported. Sorry folks, I guess if you're not into the long term questions you should take your money out now ...

New gTLD Program Update
May 7, 2009 | ICANN

ICANN continues to move forward in the implementation of the new gTLD Program while balancing and addressing community concerns on specific aspects of the program. The public comment period on the second version of the applicant guidebook recently closed and work continues to proceed regarding the discussion of overarching issues.

In order to continue progress and the community discussion, ICANN will:

* Publish an analysis of comments similar to that published after the fist version of the Guidebook,
* Conduct consultations and fora at the Sydney meeting and afterward to develop solutions to the overarching issues,
* Publish the third version of the Guidebook after the Sydney meeting when solutions to the overarching issues can be included.

With that in mind, it is anticipated that applications for new top-level domains will be accepted starting in the first quarter of 2010.
