Will Vladimir Putin be called as a witness in the Khodorkovsky trial?

Suspended

Suspend date reached

Background:

Background: "I suggest that the trial should be stopped. I think that that would be the most beneficial outcome for the country and legally justified," he said in his first comments on proceedings at Moscow's Khamovniki district court. "I consider this trial to be senseless from the legal point of view."

Russia's ex-richest man Mikhail Khodorkovsky on Tuesday said Prime Minister Vladimir Putin should testify at his latest trial, where the tycoon risks being handed an additional two-decade jail term.

The former head of the Yukos oil company is already serving an eight-year sentence for fraud and tax evasion, and opposition media have in recent days asked stern questions over the authorities' rationale for a second trial.

Khodorkovsky said Putin, who was Russia's president at the time of his arrest in 2003, should give evidence as a witness since the pair had met during his time as Yukos chief executive.

"It is important that Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin is called as a witness because I personally gave reports to him over the questions of where the income (of Yukos) went."

"Unlike normal cases, in which they first discover a crime and then look for the criminals, here they first selected a defendant and then tried to come up with a case," Khodorkovsky told the court. He spoke from a glass-and-metal courtroom cage where he and Lebedev are confined during hearings in the trial, which is expected to last several months.

Khodorkovsky accused them of violating his rights as a defendant, claiming they have bent the law to suit their purposes and sought to keep out evidence that could help exonerate him. Shokhin, who was lead prosecutor in Khodorkovsky's first trial, denied Khodorkovsky's claims and accused him of deliberately misconstruing his remarks.
