Will the "tortured beauty", Auxiliadora Martinez be given Asylum in the US?

Settled as The story proves to be fake, other, or no outcome

As WorldNetDaily can't be counted as a major mainstream news source--it is, in fact, considered by many members of the mainstream media to often contain erroneous, unsubstantiated, and uncorroborated stories--we're going to settle on option #3. After much research, we've been unable to find a single external news source telling this story that used any source but WorldNetDaily. In other words, Ms Martinez may very well be real, and she may have been granted asylum in the U.S., but that doesn't seem to be independently verifiable.

Background:

Background: According to articles in World Net Daily,
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=93690
Auxiliadora Martinez was raped, tortured, beaten, and almost murdered by the Sandinistas in Nicaragua.

FTA:
""Let's kill her!" one shouted.
Two strange men suddenly clenched her arms and ripped her blouse as she struggled to free herself. They warned her not to scream while they prepared to rape her.

She spotted woods nearby - and had a vision of her lifeless body being dumped just yards away after enduring torment of a brutal sexual attack.

Auxiliadora Martinez, 23, a Nicaraguan political refugee, was beaten with sticks, shot at, nearly raped and almost murdered - all because she fought for free elections.

Now, the U.S. is prepared to deny her asylum in the land of the free.

Martinez, a campaign organizer for Eduardo Montealegre, former Constitutionalist Party candidate for Managua mayor, has been tortured by Nicaragua's Sandinista regime and is pleading with the United States for asylum, but American immigration officials have shown her little sympathy.

Sandinista torture

Nicaragua President Daniel Ortega has employed neighborhood committees called Citizens Power Councils, or CPCs, used by his corrupt Sandinista party to spy on citizens, intimidate and torture them.

Martinez told WND the CPCs attacked her with large rocks, sticks, mortars and sprays of gunfire. A gang of Sandinista CPCs tried to rape and kill her because she was part of a group protesting the legitimacy of the 2008 municipal elections.

Sandinistas murdered her uncles in the 1980s when they were only 12 years old after they refused to join their forces.

Will she be allowed political asylum in the US? At this time, the only real mention of this case is in the above source, so is this even a real story?

Settlement details:As reported by a major mainstream news source. Suspend date may be extended for 3 months maximum if there is an active asylum case with INS. Otherwise settles as other if no resolution or further mention in media.

This is quite a woman! As the history above tells it: "...was beaten with sticks, shot at, nearly raped and almost murdered...attacked her with large rocks, sticks, mortars and sprays of gunfire.."

Has somebody been reading too many superhero comics...? DUH, she survived mortars and sprays of gunfire, and was ALMOST (but not quite) raped and murdered. And soon she will also be "not quite pregnant"...Well, ALMOST...

LOL. Good points randburg. I still haven't found any other sources or verification for this story, so if anyone here witnesses or hears of any super human feats by Auxiliadora Martinez please let us know.

I'm still looking into this, so please be patient. Basically, I can find not a single mention of this that isn't on Martinez's webpage (http://auxiliadoramartinez.com/), World Net Daily, or that doesn't quote WND verbatim. I've come across a few sites with people asking whether the story is true, and two sites with what is purported to be a photocopy of her asylum stamp, but which appears doctored. The incident is also mentioned on a few far-right blogs such as Sean Hannity's, but they, too, heavily reference the WND stories. If any of you have seen independent mainstream media reports about this, please let me know...

(FWIW, I took her case number from her webpage and tried to run it through the USCIS online case status application, but the number supplied apparently isn't the same as her application receipt number.I've written to WND asking if they have that; I'll let you know what they say.)

Still looking for official word. WND hasn't returned any of my three emails, and the U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua is saying nothing about the case (http://www.elnuevodiario.com.ni/nacionales/45811). The bottom line: we're still waiting to see whether this story exists anywhere but in the digital pages of Worldnetdaily.com...

Yes, good catch, notable.

@dieseldog: "sqlman - WND has a liberal filter on their email. :O)"

I know that, which is why I instead used my ultra-super-duper-top-secret far-Right alias when writing... :-)

I wrote the author of the article, asking for further verification. (I also contacted the LA Asylum office, which doesn't give out this type of confidential information). Here's the response I got from the author:

Steven,

This was an exclusive to WND. When you see other people report on exclusives such as this, it is usually because they are ripping off our original report.

Here’s a prime example of that after my report, with no mention of WND.
http://townhall.com/columnists/DavidSpady/2009/04/13/obama_meets_latin_americas_left

I met with Martinez for more than four hours with translators in Camarillo, Calif., and reviewed a very thick asylum packet. It was a very emotional interview for her, and she only met with WND.

These are the stories that resulted from our interviews:

U.S. gives drop-dead treatment to tortured beauty
'Tortured beauty' flooded with marriage proposals
'Tortured beauty' given U.S. asylum
(links didn't come thru here)

You can contact the LA asylum office if you want more asylum documentation than the proof in the articles. Her case number is at the bottom. But you may not find it in many other places in the mainstream media because it was an effort entirely by WND.

While I understand that you simply want to be sure of the facts, you should understand that WND reports the truth. Just because other outlets haven’t scrambled to rip this one off without crediting us doesn’t mean it is any less factual.

Best regards,

Chelsea Schilling

@sqlman:

Since WND was the source for the question, what would be the problem with using it as the source for the answer?
posted 46 weeks ago
Since the suspension date isn't until the end of the year, I don't believe it should have been settled yet. Though this may very well be the correct settlement, I don't think it has yet reached the threshold of virtual certainty. At the very least, should something come out that verifies one of the other choices before the settlement date, this settlement should be reversed.
