How many days will there be without sunspots during 2009?

Background: The sun is currently experiencing a solar minimum. This means that the sun is very quiet and has spent many days without sunspots. As of April 7, the sun has been blank for 12 consecutive days. The total for 2009 was 84 days (87%) and 595 days since the current minimum began in 2004.

73% of the days in 2008 were quiet. That is the highest number since 1913 when 85% of days were quiet. A few other 100-year records were set during the 1913 minimum. The sun had 92 consecutive spotless days and there were 1019 spotless days total.

According to solar physicist Dean Pesnell, sunspot counts could pick up "by the end of the year."

Am I ciphering this correctly that if there is 84 in 2009 so far, that would avg out to be 336 (84 x 4) for all of 2009? Except all of the odds seem to be taking place below the 329 mark. Or are we to just assume George W Bush messed up the sun spot frequency too along with the economy?

I think the pace is more like 318. The odds are skewed below that mark in case the solar minimum ends this year. No one knows for sure when it will end.

Oh my lord! I couldn't possibly tell you how many sun spots there is going to be. Wonderfully original question though.

A new group of sunspots developed last weekend. They were the most significant in many months.

well, since 12 sep there were just about 52% spotless days. to make it 280 the average for the rest of the year would have to rise above 72% again. i hereby command the sun to behave linearly...

shit, next time i will actually try to use miscalculated misinformation for my advantage.. but even though it's more like 65% since 12 sep this is still convincing enough for me to hold my wagers.

Now that spot 1029 (or what was its name) is gone there are still enough days left for a new yearly record.
