Background:

Background: On April 15, 1912, the RMS Titanic sunk in the North Atlantic Ocean after hitting an iceberg. More than 1500 people perished in the disaster. The shipwreck was discovered by Robert Ballard in 1985.

Now, 5900 pieces of china, ship fittings and personal belongings are the subject of an ownership dispute. On one side is the salvage company RMS Titanic, Inc. That company has exclusive salvage rights to the shipwreck, but does not own the artifacts or the wreck itself. RMST conducts traveling displays of the artifacts.

US District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith is expected to rule that the artifacts remain together and accessible to the public. The artifacts are valued at $110.9 million.
