This question needs to suspend earlier, I think. Perhaps 11am EDT so that there's still some mystery left to the results?

My biggest problem with this question, and the several created by Lola is that they include several markets that I am not currently keeping daily records on. Adding additional markets involves a much greater amount of time involved in trying to accurately settle them.

We'll try this one for a week or so to see if the interest is there for this question (which I actually do like) but I'll be needing some assistance in making sure the settlements are done correctly and in a timely fashion.

As to suspension times, I think an hour after the New York markets open is good enough...so maybe have them suspend about 10:30 EDT....12 PM PST is way too late

The bigger problem is: May 3, 4 and 5 are public holidays in Japan, so there won't be any trading. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Japan

@bernardo, have you been asked to become a SU? If not, someone should catch up on that.
posted 28 weeks ago
@kruijs, @bernado - We don't "ask" people to become SU's anymore b/c we've found that they end being less into it. But we take volunteers! If you're interested, send tisha (at hubdub) an email and she'll get back to you shortly.

geez Bayoubear, I thought new questions were the lifeblood of Hubdub. In a perfect world it would be nice for Hubdub users to have the option to bet on ANY OR ALL of the worlds equity indexes. Here are links to a couple websites which should help you settle multiple world equity market questions more easily.

Going back to Lola's point about new questions...let's step back a bit. In the early days of Hubdub, question making was wide open...and this did result in some problems, particularly regarding questions that may have been created inaccurately, or had little interest. As we moved into last summer, the business category was getting overloaded for the staff at the time, and only questions regarding the US markets were allowed. This is referring to the type of questions regarding daily markets, such as will so and so open higher or close higher, etc.

As I came on as Business Category Editor, I made a decision to try to add some of the international markets back into the mix, and began by putting the FTSE, DAX, and BSE back on a regular basis. Fortunately for me, a few players (primarily Orlin, Elly and Curios) took on the responsibility of creating these questions on a regular basis, and insured that they were set correctly and took a lot of the worry off of me. Recently, we've added questions regarding CAC nto the daily mix and questions involving TSX, and Nikkei are sometimes posed, but not on a daily basis regarding yes or no questions for openings and closings.

I've found that more players are interested usually in questions that allow a range of options, such as what % gain or loss, or at what point margin will a market close. Those questions that are simply yes or no on the opening or closing of a market aren't as heavily played.

It's not that I object to these questions, it's just that I'm looking at being able to handle the additional volume of time involved in making sure that they are properly managed.

Let's see how these questions run this week, and determine the amount of interest and make sure of the times.

BTW...this question is doing fine as far as the amount of interest....over 50 predictors and over 100 positions so far...this may be a winner!

of course.
I've sent 1725 challenges to ensure large participation numbers :-)
posted 28 weeks ago
So only 10 of these exchanges max can close UP today (ftse and nikkei are closed).

Of course this question is a winner ;-). It was popular last year too, and that's separate from the Derivatives connection. It only stopped because the rules on foreign markets changed.

To John: It could be altered to just 9 exchanges which would better match what we tend to follow anyway, by dropping the Straits Times, the MIBTel and the MerVal (although the MerVal is the real wild card, being from South America).

@bayoubear - I would be happy to create the market index questions for the pacific region (New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, India) if someone else (orlin, elly, curios) could handle writing up the market index questions for Europe and the Americas which should ensure that Hubdub admins won't have to spend a lot of time cleaning up error infested questions.

Would that be reasonable solution for those mentioned herein?

My biggest problem is making sure that I can have reliable data to track everyday. Generally I have found Reuters pretty good most of the time, but not all of these recently created questions have coverage by them. Maybe I can provide a list of acceptable indices and then see if there are creators out there, and interest in them. Dividing it up wouldn't be a bad idea either, and avoid hurt feelings from toes being stepped on.

I'm all for expanding the areas we cover, it's just that I'm looking for what I can best manage from a settlement point of view....we'll work it out....

LET Lola do new Zealand, Australia , and Hong Kong only and let Orlon ,Elly and myself to the others . if not there is certainly going to be a fight . my question to her why all of a sudden does she want to rock the boat? is she looking for self glory!!!!!! . her first attempt was to say the least a joke she had the time wrong. only half of the question and left us to complete. No stay out of it Lola and be fair.

I got this flag from Curios....

of the ones not on hoilday.
there where ten of the 12
Asia : Nikkei 225 (^N225), Hang Seng (^HSI), Straits Times (^STI) and BSE Sensex (^BSESN)
Europe: DAX (^GDAXI), CAC 40 (^FCHI), MIBTel (^MIBTEL) and FTSE 100 (^FTSE)
Americas: Dow Jones Industrial (^DJI), TSX (^GSPTSE), MerVal (^MERV), and NASDAQ (^IXIC)
the exception being merval that was down

The one thing it doesn't say clearly is what the outcome was...unless the 'mark' in front of each is supposed to indicate the outcome....

There is a difficulty level in tracking and settling this question...I need assistance from the creator or other players...or else limit it to the ones I normally track every day...

Someone please give me a clear answer on this for settlement...How many did close higher on Monday...
posted 28 weeks ago
The mark in front of each is just the Yahoo Finance code for market indices as opposed to individual stocks.

Kruijs has submitted a breakdown of the results which I agree with. In particular, MerVal closed up
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hp?s=^MERV. They all did except for the 2 on holiday.

Thanks to Kruijs for the settlement info...is there one site for this or did you compile it from separate reporting sites?
