Will the Iranian Guardian Council follow Mousavi's appeal and cancel the election result?

Settled as No

"A spokesman for the powerful guardian council, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, was quoted by Iran's state-run English language Press TV as saying the organisation had found "no major fraud or breach in the election". As a result, he said, the outcome would not be annulled."

Background:

Background: Defeated presidential candidate Mirhossein Mousavi formally appealed against Iran's election result on Sunday and called on his supporters to keep up their peaceful protests.

Mousavi, heavily defeated in Friday's election by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, said in a statement on his website he had lodged an appeal with the Guardian Council, the top legislative body in the Islamic Republic.

"Today, I have submitted my official formal request to the council to cancel the election result," Mousavi said in the statement.

Thousands of demonstrators have clashed with police in Tehran for two consecutive days since the hardline Ahmadinejad won Friday's vote, which Mousavi said was marred by fraud and irregularities.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has defended President Ahmadinejad's re-election saying the results are fair, speaking at Friday Prayers.

The Supreme Leader said the competition was transparent and that the Islamic Republic would "not betray the vote of the people".

It is the first public appearance since he gave his unequivocal backing to the election result and President Ahmadinejad.

Iran supreme leader orders vote fraud probe

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is ordering the powerful Guardian Council to examine the allegations by pro-reform candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi, who claims widespread vote rigging in Friday’s election.

It is a stunning turnaround for Iran’s most powerful figure, who previously welcomed the results.

In Pictures: 'Iran Elections Protest'
http://www.monstersandcritics.com/news/middleeast/features/article_1483685.php/In_Pictures_Iran_Elections_Protest

Tens of thousands of supporters of pro-reform leader Mir Hossein Mousavi are streaming through the center of Tehran in a boisterous protest against election results that declared President Mamoud Ahmadinejad the winner.
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5g8-DEMtAE9q4i4ySQ0eV_qZefmRQD98R65981

Hundreds of thousands of Iranians turned out for a mass opposition rally in Tehran on Monday, an AFP correspondent said, with one policeman saying the figure could be as many as two million. "Between 1.5 million to two million people have gathered," one policeman involved in the security operation for the protest told AFP.

So, what's going on? To what extent will this be a real investigation as opposed to either a) a power play by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to gain power from Ahmadinejad and/or provide window dressing for Ahmadinejad's likely-stolen election and repression of the opposition; or b) an effort by the Ayatollah to force out Ahmadinejad and install Mousavi with appropriate concessions to the Ayatollah? Looks like the Ayatollah may be calling the shots here. These guys play hardball. I can't find much info on what's really happening.

Does anybody have ANY IDEA how a dictatorship works? The dictator is re-elected. There is an official investigation into the appeal of the opposition party that will not produce any notable change. If you have any questions about what is going on: HAVE A LOOK AT ZIMBABWE.

SAME THING SPELLED DIFFERENTLY.

I don't know what's going on there, but Ahmadinejad gets any power that he has from the Ayatollah, not the other way 'round.

Not quite, the Iranians got rid of the Shah, (pro-Western, but he made Cheney look like a piker in the torture department).
No such luck in Zimbabwe.. My 2 cents: If the Supreme Leader Ayatollah blah blah blah and the clerics-in-charge were to throw their arrogant, bullying puppet under the bus...the people would be appeased and the revolution thwarted.
Either that or duct-tape his mouth..

The Iranian Guardian Council has agreed to a recount of certain votes, BUT..

It will only cancel the election result IF IT CHANGES WHO WON THE ELECTION...Altering the election result percentages will not cancel the election result if the same candidate still wins...

Letter to the Minister of Justice of the Islamic Republic of Iran

We would like you to pay immediate attention to what is going on currently inside the country. We are currently with people who think that their rights have been infringed upon and they have a right to ask for that right to be given back to them. Not only are students being picked up from universities, but now reformist leaders and known political faces are being picked up from their homes without the slightest regard to the laws of this country.

This will not only do no good in solving the problems we are facing, but will further exasperate them. The spate of killings during these protests are condemnable. Yet from the peaceful protests we have seen, it seems unlikely that they were the instigators of violence.

We request your assistance in this matter because you have a responsibility towards your people and the Islamic Republic. The continuation of this violence will do nothing but harm, thus, we want every bit of help you can give us in ending this spree of violence that is being carried out against peaceful protesters.

Supreme leader: Iran vote was "definitive victory"

Iran's supreme leader says there was "definitive victory" and no rigging in disputed presidential elections that set off days of unprecedented protests.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei offered no concession to opposition supporters who are demanding the elections be canceled and held again.

He blamed Great Britain and Iran's external enemies for the unrest, vigorously defending the ruling system in his first public comments since supporters of challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi flooded the streets.
