Background: On Monday, the Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary (Jack Straw MP), will announce government plans to enable life peers to resign their peerage and commit the government to ending the concept of peers inheriting their titles. Under these plans it would be possible for Lord Mandelson (Business Secretary) to resign his peerage (which only non life peers can do at the moment). The Guardian is suggesting that this could open the way towards a Mandelson premiership before the next election.
