Will Pete Rose finally be voted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010?

Background:

Charlie Hustlin'

Ex-Major League great Pete Rose (aka "Charlie Hustle") is, by all definitions, the best baseball player to not be in the Hall of Fame. This market wants to know if Rose will finally be voted in.

Rose, who played from 1963 to 1986, is best known for his many years with the Cincinnati Reds. A switch hitter, he is still the all-time Major League leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and outs (10,328). He earned three World Series rings, three batting titles, one MVP Award, two Gold Gloves, the Rookie of the Year Award, and made 17 All-Star appearances at a still-unmatched five different positions (2B, LF, RF, 3B, and 1B).

After retiring from playing, Rose became manager of the Reds...and that's apparently when the trouble started. In 1989, Rose agreed to permanent ineligibility from baseball amidst accusations that he gambled on games while playing for and managing the Reds. He denied the accusations for years, but in 2004 finally admitted that he'd bet on baseball, and even on the Reds, but never against them.

Because of the lifetime ban, Rose has been completely shut off from baseball. Worse, his ban has kept him from even being placed on a voting ballot for the Hall of Fame. This, in spite of the fact that his admitted illicit activities took place long after he'd accomplished so much as a player.

Today (July 27, 2009), the New York Daily News reported that baseball Commissioner Bud Selig told one of their reporters that he was seriously considering lifting Rose's lifetime suspension, which would allow Rose's name to be placed on the Hall of Fame ballot. Many baseball greats--including such notable players Hank Aaron, Joe Morgan, and Frank Robinson--have apparently spoken with Selig to urge reinstatement.

So...will A) Selig lift the ban, B) Rose's name be placed on the ballot by the Veterans Committee, C) Rose receive at least the 75% of the vote necessary to make it into the Hall?

Settlement details:As reported by a major mainstream news source.

This market is scheduled to remain open until February 15, 2010 (the date all completed ballots must be postmarked). However:

NOTE I: Should Selig publicly announce before that date that Rose will definitely not be reinstated, this market will suspend and settle as 'No'.

NOTE II: Should Selig lift the ban but it's announced before February 15 that Rose's name won't be placed on the 2010 voting ballot for any reason, this market will suspend and settle as 'No'.

NOTE III: Should Selig lift the ban, and should Rose's name be placed on the 2010 ballot, this market will suspend on the schedule date of February 15. However, this market will not settle until the results of the voting are officially announced, which should take place in mid-March.

Great question!

I was a huge Pete Rose fan. Nobody ever played the game more intensely and very few played it any better. "Charlie Hustle" definitely screwed up and was severely punished for it, but unless someone can prove that today's stars are all model citizens (Ha!), it's time for Rose to be in the Hall where he belongs.
