Will the Germans re-issue Mein Kampf?

Background: Plans by German scholars from the Institute of Contemporary History (IFZ) to reprint Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” as an academic treatise were rejected by the state copyright holders, who said a new edition of the book could fuel support for far-right groups.

The German Central Council of Jews do not longer object a publication. Secretary General Stephan Kramer called a possible publication of an scientifically edited and commented edition both useful and important.

The Bavarian authorities this week reaffirmed a 64-year-old ban on the book after the IFZ applied for permission to reprint the work. State officials said that extremist groups could have legally promoted the book if the ban had been lifted. Bernhard Gotto, IFZ’s spokesman, said he still hopes the state will lift the ban to allow a full analysis of the book.

Written by Hitler in 1924 as he languished in a Munich prison, Mein Kampf, or My Struggle, combines autobiography with the Nazi leader’s political manifesto. It last rolled off authorized German presses in 1945 before being banned that same year after World War II ended.

Historians at the IFZ, which was set up with public funds in 1949 to document and research the Nazi era, had sought exclusive rights to repackage the work in an annotated scholarly volume and publish it ahead of potential rivals.

The copyright, held by the Bavarian Finance Ministry, will expire anyway on December 31st, 2015.

Will the IFZ get the allowance to re-issue "Mein Kampf" during 2009?

This doesn't seem like it belongs in Science, but I can't quite decide where else to put it. Politics kinda fits... World kinda fits... Entertainment kinda fits... General always works... Pretty much the only one I'm sure of is that its not related to Sports!

Hu? Entertainment? I thought Science would be appropriate because of the "scientifically edited and commented edition" intend.

Most book questions end up in Entertainment, that's why I was thinking it. No big deal, it can stay here. Was just interesting to see how many categories it touched :)

if you consider the author's lack of access to recreational sport as a youth then it could be considered as "what-if?" text book for any College's Recreation and Leisure Program. Guess Adolf's mother wasn't a soccermom

@meander,
hehehe

@jenni,
yes, I was in doubt myself

So much has been written about this book that I would like to read it for myself to get a truer sense of where Hitler's head was at at the time. Anyone remember the slogan "Banned in Boston?" Most of us really don't need someone else deciding what we can and cannot read. FWIW

Bucky- I saw a fantastic movie, Hitler: The Rise of Evil. It covers his early years and ends in 1936 I think. I was mesmerized by it, and so frightened with current rises in power. It's really fascinating and of course on DVD.

@Bucky - read in my local paper today that "Mein Kampf" is available in paperback, and that there are plenty of editions around. By plenty of editions I'm hoping they mean in various languages.

My goodness, I did the unthinkable and Googled it. You will be buried in videos, kindles, books, etc.
