Will the International Space Station leave Earth orbit before 2017?
Background: After spending about $100 billion and more than ten years of construction, the International Space Station's partners plan to install the last components in late 2010. After that, five years of funding are planned for the ISS. After funding expires, the ISS is expected to be vacated and prepped for de-orbiting. It is expected to crash into the Pacific Ocean during 2016.
The Obama administration and NASA are currently assessing the future of human spaceflight. Proponents of extending the ISS's life say that it could be used as a springboard for missions to the moon, Mars and deep space.
