@corbally:

That is not a gender, so if that were the outcome there would be no difficulty in settling this question.

This is a rumor so far but she might be a hermaphrodite (having both male and female reproductive organs). What happens to settlement then?
posted 12 weeks ago
  15 mrperfkt[Admin]
As the settlement options are limited, anything other than male/female/no news would likely result in a void. We'll do our best to settle, but if there is no appropriate option then that would probably be the best option.

Tests have revealed Caster Semenya's testosterone level to be three times higher than those normally expected in a female sample, BBC Sport understands;

I'm not sure how this one is going to settle with the above options and most recent news update:
Tests show world champion runner Caster Semenya is a hermaphrodite (has both male and female sex organs).
Probably going to have to review this one.

According to:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/amateur/story/2009/09/10/sp-iaaf-athletics-semenya.htmlShe has "has internal testes — male sexual organs which produce testosterone — and no womb or ovaries."
Sounds like if we have to go with either male or female on this question, I'd say testes and no ovaries makes her more male...

these reports are not substantiated at all...the iaaf has not finished reviewing the results of the tests...after that they will have discussions with semenya..could take a few weeks still before they release the results...while she does have higher testosterone levels than a "normal" female, it is still within official, legal range...am searching my history for page i read this on...btw, another Q is open http://www.hubdub.com/m53339/what_will_the_IAAF_do_with_South_African_gold_medal_winner_semenya

posted this morning http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,26056981-401,00.html - The IAAF expects to receive the full set of results this week.
from http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/athletics/article6829813.ece - general secretary, Pierre Weiss, said: “It is clear that she is a woman but maybe not 100 per cent.” and The IAAF is still lacking the South African tests
from http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=4455424 - The definitive outcome will be determined within about two weeks after test results arrive in Monaco...."Only then, with conclusive evidence, would we be in a position to make an educated decision based on that evidence," Davies said. "My information is that it will take between eight days and two weeks to be in a position to speak to Semenya and decide where to go."
from http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/trackandfield/news/story?id=4463535 - we will not be in a position to speak to the athlete about them for at least a few weeks.
"After that, depending on the results, we will meet privately with the athlete to discuss further action," he said....Davies said the newspaper's report "should be treated with caution."

STATEMENT ON CASTER SEMENYA
New IAAF LOGO (IAAF.org)

New IAAF LOGO (IAAF.org)

Monte-Carlo - The IAAF has noted statements in recent media articles regarding the athlete Caster Semenya of South Africa.

We would like to emphasise that these should not be considered as official statements by the IAAF.

We can officially confirm that gender verification test results will be examined by a group of medical experts. NO decision on the case will be communicated until the IAAF has had the opportunity to complete this examination. We do not expect to make a final decision on this case before the next meeting of the IAAF Council which takes place in Monaco on November 20-21.

Please note that there will be no further comments from the IAAF on Caster Semenya until that time.

I think the deciding factor is does she get to keep her medal. If she gets to keep her medal, she is qualified to compete as a female. If they strip her of her medal, she is not qualified to compete as a female, and therefore must compete as a male in future compititions.

Just my idea.

It was already stated that she will keep the medals no matter what the tests will show due to the fact that she was allowed to compete. But this is not what the question asks. Instead this should be judged taking into consideration the IAAF decision to allow or not allow her to compete in the future. The official decision seems that it will be taken at the IAAF Council meeting of 20-21 November.

the news media is all over the place on this...i've heard both that she will keep the medal(because she wasn't doping) and that she'll have it stripped(because she's not a female, which seems more in line with the IAAF's rules)...of course, all of this is based upon one anonymous source who saw one test and that single source has been repeated throughout all of the media reports...i think both Q's should be re-opened since the IAAF has stated they don't even have all the tests back yet and that they won't make a decision until November...i just wish something would happen to these Q's...kinda pointless to let them sit for two more months being suspended because of ONE report that got repeated endlessly...that is the point of this website, to wager on what the outcome will be for reported stories

@pics4d - Good point. It does appear that there are further official rulings to be made. I'm going to get a second opinion from the other Cat Eds and SUs on the best way to proceed. As long as there some degree of predictability, I have no problem in unsuspending.

Maybe the question should be settled as she is a male AND a female! Payouts for all! =)

I don't have any Hubdub Dollars on this one, but,In 1986 Spanish hurdler Maria José Martínez-Patiño was stripped of her first-place winnings when discovered to have an XY chromosome, instead of the female’s XX.. Surely it's all about the Chromosomes? xx girl xy boy.

Actually, when I first read this question soon after it was posted here, I could not believe there was no provision for the most-likely result of "intersex". Its not always just chromosomes. Some fetuses are androgen insensitive so they simply do not respond to testosterone during development so they are genetically XY but develop as females because all fetuses start out as female until that Y chromosome kicks in. Most intersex classifications involve extra sex chromosomes. Some involve what was destined to be two separate twin embryos that collided with each other and merged in the first 24 hours of travel down the fallopian tubes. This individual person is really two twins co-existing in the same body. And if it was two separate eggs with two separate males contributing the sperm, then the resulting Chimera is a Criminologists Nightmare because his dna is radically different in his different organs.
With all these Kleinfelter's Syndrome and the like, I wonder why any Prediction Market would post such an ill-framed question certain to lead to debates rather than decisions.
Vice cops often arrest a female-appearing street-walker and since there is no Intersex Jail, if there is a penis it goes to the Mens Jail irrespective of dress or desires. Thailand has a massive sex change industry simply because poverty-driven prostitution is more profitable for females than males, not because of any psychological or genetic abberations.
All this stuff is common knowledge and I don't see how a wager can be proposed that fails to make provisions for the most likely outcome of Indeterminate.

Let's do not forget that this is a sports question.
As the background description says "she was undergoing a gender test because of concerns she does not meet requirements to compete as a woman".
There are no competitions for "Indeterminates" so no decision will be made towards that.
If the IAAF will allow her to compete in the women competitions then the decision is that "she is a female".
If not than "she is a male".
If no decision is made until the end of the year than it's "no news".

After reviewing news, comments here and getting feedback from other admins, there still appears to be some differing opinions on this one.
The news about the test results do appear to be about tests which were leaked. So, I'm not sure that the results can be considered official.
If the leaked results do turn out to be valid, then it seems like a void would be the only option (unless there is no update by suspend date) as there is no option for "other results/intersex/etc."

What the IAFF decides to do about allowing her to compete or what happens to any medals seems to be a separate issue, as this question asks specifically about the gender test results.

So, the question is being reopened at this time with the notice that if a more official announcement confirms that "she" is hermaphrodite, has both male and female sex organs or anything other than clearly male or female, then the question could end up voided at a later date.

BSM, you should make another Q that refers to what will the IAFF do concerning allowing (he/she) to compete.
