UK Politics: How Many MPs Will Repay Expenses?
Background:
At least 325 MPs will be ordered this week to repay money or provide further details of their parliamentary allowances by the head of an official inquiry into the Commons expenses scandal.
Sir Thomas Legg will dispatch hundreds of letters tomorrow notifying MPs of the findings of his investigation into the widespread abuse of allowances system uncovered by the Telegraph.
The “Legg letters” will fall into three categories: MPs who are told to repay cash, those who are ordered to provide further information about their claims, such as receipts, and those who are told no further action will be taken. A senior Whitehall source told The Telegraph that “more than half” of the 646 MPs would fall into the first two categories.
The letters will be sent out privately, and Sir Thomas is not expected to deliver his final report until December.
