Background: Back in May '08, the Canadian $ (CAD, affectionately known as the Loonie because of the picture of a loon on the back) was worth slightly more than the USD buoyed by the oil-driven economic boom north of the border. The CAD remained close to parity with the US$ until Oct 08, when the crashing energy prices gutted the Loonie and brought it to about 1.2 to 1.3 CAD to the USD. With rising commodity prices in late spring, the Loonie has strengthened once more and has been fluctuating in parallel with oil prices since. On October 29, 2009, the exchange rate was 1.0673 to the US$. The 52 wk Range is 1.0207 - 1.3068.
So, with the continued turmoil in the currency and energy markets, where will the Loonie go from here? Anything can happen.... The question is: How many Canadian dollars (CAD) will one USD be worth? (Closing price on November 6, 2009)
