Background: Back in July '08, the Australian $ was close to parity with the US$. The economic crisis has wreaked havoc in the currency markets not just the stock market. The Aussie $ dropped like a rock in the late summer and fall, bottoming out at just over 0.62 to the US$ in Oct '08. It started this year around 0.71 to the US$, but strengthened to as high as 0.822 to the USD in late spring with the rise in commodity prices. Earlier this summer it faltered again with the recent pullback in commodities, but now is coming back strong. On Oct 29, 2009, the exchange rate was 1AUD = $0.9160. The 52wk Range is: 0.6073 - 0.9329.
So, with the recent turmoil in the currency markets, where will we go from here? The price of commodities may be key to the relative strength or weakness of Australian currency.
