Will the San Francisco Bay Bridge be closed again in 2009?
Background: The Bay Bridge is open and there is already talk of closing it for repairs, to the repairs, again. http://bit.ly/43oXla
SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The Bay Bridge was open for the commute home Monday night after a five-day shutdown for emergency repairs. Brackets were put into place to shore up steel rods and help patch a crack in a support beam. Caltrans officials announced Monday afternoon that the repairs that went on all weekend were just a "short-term fix."

Spokesman Bart Ney has told several media outlets that plans are in the works to once again close the Bay Bridge to repair a cracked eyebar. The closure is expected by the end of the year and will last one to four days. This follows a nearly week long closure of the bridge earlier this month after a 5,000 pound piece of metal fell from the same eyebar section. Construction crews made repairs to the upper deck after two rods and a crossbar broke off during a Tuesday night rush hour. Caltrans put a fix in place, but says it is temporary and requires daily maintenance. They want to come up with a more permanent solution that will last the four years commuters will need to use the bridge while a new span is built.

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- Caltrans is now backing off earlier reports that the Bay Bridge may be closed again before the Christmas holiday.
Caltrans had been holding out hope that permanent repairs could be made over the holidays when traffic volumes are much lighter. The span will need to be closed for one to four days for a permanent eye-bar fix.
“We will need to close the Bay Bridge once we actually put this into place. We’re in type selection right now, we might not know for another month until exactly when we’re going to do it,” said Caltrans spokesman Bart Ney. “There is a slight remote possibility that we might be able to do this by the end of the year. It’s much more likely that this will happen after the new year.”
Ney says daily inspections and lane closures will continue.
A Labor Day fix of the eye-bar failed, closing the bridge for nearly a week in late October, early November.
