After "Paranormal Activity," which will be the next film to gross $100 million domestically?

Settled as Couples Retreat

Background: Several films to be released in November 2009 are likely to reach $100 million in domestic box office receipts -- but when? An older film, "Couples Retreat," also is approaching the $100 million total. The question is, which film will be first to reach that milestone?

The clock doesn't start ticking until "Paranormal Activity" reaches $100 million, so any film that reaches $100 million before it does can't be the winner.

The current tally of box office totals can be found here:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2009&p=.htm

If two films pass the $100 million total on the same day, the winner will be the film in the fewer number of theaters. If they are in the same number of theaters, the winner will be the film that had the highest total on the day before reaching $100 million.

And what happens if Couples Retreat finishes on the same day as PA (like this Friday) ? The same day is not before .

I don't expect that will happen, but if it does, my intent was/is to use the tie-breaking method listed above. So if today they both reach $100M, "Couples Retreat" would be the winning choice here because "Paranormal Activity" came in "first."

Forgot to say -- right now "Paranormal Activity" currently is in fewer theaters. I don't know about Friday or later.

Actually, I see by looking at the numbers that that could happen on Friday. I wish I had explicitly thought of that possibility. I suppose a second way of looking at it is to use the second tie-breaker -- "Paranormal Activity" is likely to have the higher total the day before going over $100M.

According to The-numbers.com, "Paranormal Activity" is adding enough screens on Friday that it will have more than "Couples Retreat." My best guess right now is that "PA" will top $100M on Friday and "CR" will on Saturday. That would be a preferred outcome to breaking a tie in some way.

I agree.

Number of theaters:
Couples Retreat Universal 2,507 -350 (BOM & numbers)
Paranormal Activity 2,712 +154 Paramount (numbers only - this could be a mistake bacause PA added 154 last week and BOM has no numbers)

I must have topped $800K on Thursday then. It's certainly possible.

According to the numbers at Box Office Mojo, "PA" fell short of $100M on Thursday, but it will certainly pass that total today (could have by now, as a matter of fact). "CR" would have to get $2.1M, better than its performance last week, to pass $100M today, and that isn't very likely.

I really like questions that are close like this one.
