The Dubai World Championship is the climax of the European Tour Race to Dubai that began in Shanghai with the HSBC Champions event on 6 November 2008 and ends at Jumeirah Golf Estates (Earth Course) with this tournament..

The top 60 players ranked according to their earnings from all European Tour events, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships qualify for the Dubai World Championship which is a stroke play event with no cut.
