The 2010 New Oxford American Dictionary word of the year will come from which category?
Background: The New Oxford American Dictionary has named its word of the year for the past several years. 2009's word was "unfriend." Its definition is unfriend - verb - To remove someone as a ‘friend’ on a social networking site such as Facebook. Unfriend is not a new word. It appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1659.
Interestingly enough, Facebook does not have an official term for this process. However, it is considering making "unfriend" the official term. One social networking site, Hubdub, appears to use the term exclusively.
Unfriend beat out words such as birther, sexting and freemium.
Previous words of the year were:
2008 - hypermiling (environment)
2007 - locavore (environment)
2006 - carbon neutral (environment)
2005 - podcast (technology)
