Background: Back in July '08, the Australian $ was close to parity with the US$. The economic crisis has wreaked havoc in the currency markets not just the stock market. The Aussie $ dropped like a rock in the late summer and fall, bottoming out at just over 0.62 to the US$ in Oct '08. It started this year around 0.71 to the US$, but has been coming back strong. On Friday, Nov 20, 2009, the exchange rate was 1AUD = $0.9145, virtually unchanged from two weeks ago. The 52wk Range is: 0.6077 - 0.9406.
So, with the recent turmoil in the currency markets, where will we go from here? The price of commodities may be key to the relative strength or weakness of Australian currency.
