Background: SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Greece's prime minister delivered a sobering speech Monday, warning that the country has lost international credibility and is in danger of sinking under the weight of its ballooning budget deficit.
The speech by Prime Minister George Papandreou was eagerly anticipated by investors, since concerns over the deficit have triggered a sell-off in Greek bonds and stocks in recent weeks.
Pressure on Greece has been mounting after the government admitted that its deficit this year will rise to 12.7% of gross domestic product, well above previous official projections.
