Will the erected Barack Obama be taken down?

Settled as No

It was relocated, but not in time to settle this question

Background:

Background: He went by the name "Barry," attended the local elementary school near where his statue now stands and owned a pet monkey.

"Everyone in this country can express their opinions freely and give awards like statues to anyone freely," Jakarta Mayor Sylviana Murni. Murni ruled out moving the statue, saying that it has been erected the correct approvals and without political motive.

A statue of President Barack Obama as a boy erected in a Jakarta park has been targeted in a Facebook campaign by thousands who say it should be removed.

The Indonesian-language Facebook group named "Take Down the Barack Obama Statue in Taman Menteng Park" had attracted more than 15,000 members by Tuesday since the 43-inch (110-centimeter) statue of 10-year-old Obama dressed in shorts and a T-shirt was unveiled in the downtown park on Thursday last week.

More information from the AP article cited by the market creator:

"The statue cost more than $10,000. The money was donated by eight Indonesian patrons, a television station and a disaster relief charity."

The idea of a disaster relief charity paying to erect a statue of the president seems to upset some, but it makes sense to me.

Just as the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize was followed by an escalation in Afghanistan, giving Obama awards before he's actually done anything may remove some of the incentive for him to engage in harmful actions.

If the statue in Indonesia stops ObamaCare, it will have been disaster money well spent.

Great question, Kruijs. I lived and worked in Jakarta for 3 years (late 70s) so I'm interested in this question. Hmmm.... can't figure out how to bet though. When I lived there, Indonesians were pretty easygoing and openminded... but I've heard they're less subservient to Westerners than they used to be (and I don't mean the bombings by extremists... that's different.) Not sure how most view Obama... interesting that there's controversy over this statue.

BTW the Menteng area of Jakarta has a Hotel Menteng which at the time, included the Hotmen Bar-- sounds like a gay bar but definitely WAS NOT!

Indonesia mulls tearing down Obama statue

Indonesian authorities said Monday they are considering a petition to tear down a statue of US President Barack Obama as a boy, only a month after the bronze was unveiled in Jakarta.

"We've been discussing for the past two weeks what to do with the statue... whether to take it down, move it elsewhere or retain it. We're finding the best solution," Jakarta parks agency official Dwi Bintarto said.

Barack Obama statue removed from Jakarta park

Authorities removed a statue of Barack Obama from a park in the Indonesian capital due to a public backlash and moved it Monday to a nearby elementary school that the U.S. president attended as a child.
