Will a best actor or best director winner make a political statement at the 2010 Oscars?

Settled as No

Although Bigelow mentioned her support for the troops, that can hardly be construed as a political statement, especially as her movie dealt directly with troops anyway.

Background:

Background: The main reason people turn the Oscars off, which doesn't seem to phase them. For settlement, it must be a best actor/actress, best supporting actor/actress, or best director winner making a political statement during his/her acceptance speech. "You really like me" is an example of a non-political statement. "Get us the heck out of Afghanistan" is an example of a political statement. The awards are to be held on Mar. 7.

Settlement details:As reported by a major mainstream news source.

I presume that a winner that requests charitable support for Haiti is making a humanitarian plea. A winner that would say that the US needs to get out of Haiti would be making a political statement.

Although the Iraq and Afghanistan wars go on as usual and Gitmo is still open, Obama is president not Bush. Just the policies remain the same. A safe reason to vote no.

It could be a "pro" statement, anyway.

People likely to win:
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow, James Cameron
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges, George Clooney
Best Actress: Sandra Bullock, Meryl Streep
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz
Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique

Not really sure but Cameron seems like the type.

Where would we be without the razor sharp intellect and political insight of Hollywood?

We wouldn't have had Ronald Reagan as president.

"Who the hell wants to hear actors talk?" -- H. M. Warner, Warner Brothers, 1927.

Harry Warner has been ridiculed for this as a "bad prediction" (he later revised his opinion and went on to continued success)... but he is very much right today, about actors talking about their political views!

Settle as YES. (I can't request settlement for some reason)
I argue that Kathryn Bigelow's comments about soldiers should count. It's perhaps a little wider interpretation but it's still a statement on a political issue.

@chull
Nope, thanking our troops is not political.....it's just common sense. She's thanking our boys fighting overseas, not saying that war is bad, we should pull out, or anything political like that.

@all Oscar Hubdubbers - I'm going to be traveling today, so it will likely be Monday evening before the Oscar markets are settled. I won't forget about them, I promise! Settlement Requests& flags are still down, but I'll take care of them as soon as I get back on line.

Best of luck to all bettors tonight!

If she hadn't thanked our troops, would that have been taken as political? Someone would have written a political editorial the next morning about "anti-military Hollywood" if she hadn't.

I think BadWolf is correct.
It would have been more political if Kathryn Bigelow had not shown appreciation for the men and women who are putting their lives on the line for our country.

If Jeff Bridges, who was not in the "Hurt Locker", had thanked our troops, would that have been political?

@mungo10

Nope that also wouldn't have been poltical, since it's just plain common courtesy(or at least it should be) to thank our troops that put their lives on the line every day.
