This really isn't much sillier than the proposal to build new condos for the homeless, druggies or alcoholics, as Mayor John Hickenlooper has suggested.

The Extraterrestrial Civil Liberties Union will have a field day in court, when space aliens are denied equal housing.

Mr. Pekman was on Foxnews this morning, they gave him like 5 minutes of face time....probably will be easier to collect the signatures, now...

Peckman is very articulate - That will help his cause.
But he is a whackjob!

I read somewhere he is 54 y/o and still lives at home w/parents.
And he has a device he is selling:

thanks for the link.... he is a little nutty, but in a likeable way. Taking his views to the extreme makes him look a little silly, but i think he'll get the signatures required, but i don't think the measure will pass the popular vote...

As you note - Big difference in getting the signatures required and actually getting it to pass at election time.
I think you are right about him getting 4000 signatures.

"He is 54, single and lives with his parents"

that says it all!

He really only needs 4,000 signatures? He may be a nutjob. However, if my calculations are correct, 4000 represents not even .001% of the population in Colorado. I bet there are atleast 4000 other nutjobs. Is there a statewide Star Trek convention before the petition deadline?

it's only denver residents...but still a small percentage.... in louisiana it would only take 500...

I live 60 miles north of Denver. Anyways (TMI) The Capital Hill Peoples Fair is this weekend, and is expected to draw 250K visitors, becoming Colorado's 3rd largest city for 2 days.

Jeff Peckman has a booth at the fair and I think he might get his 4K sigs this weekend.

Jeff is doing the Letterman show. I wonder if he will give an update to number of signers on his petition?
I start work at 4:00 AM, so watching Letterman is not on my usual schedule.

umm, that is not the petition, it is an online "support the initiative" petition showing support for the actual petition.... anyone can sign this one....it really has nothing to do with the actual initiative..... thanks for turning the odds against me, i staked another fortune on it....

I just signed it! woohooooo! 336.... still not the real petition

But the "official site" doesn't show the number of signatures collected so far.
It might be 5000 or it might be none. I know because I have looked there too.
My earlier posting is the closest thing I could find as to how many signatures he has collected. It's still better than a link to an article about an imaginary conversation. . .

As for me turning this market around on you - that logic assumes that people actually listen to me in the first place. Name just (1) ONE thing that I have said which changed your mind.
I rest my case, your honor.

P.S. I lost 41K $H on that stupid Michel Fournier record setting high speed, high altitude parachute attempt. I realized it was stupid for me to not diversify my betting more and I only blame myself.

hey, i wasn't criticizing you at all, i was just pointing out that it wasn't official....i wasn't blaming you....at all, sorry if you percieved it that way.... the issue now is whether it will be on the ballot

OK, my friend.

I will write a short note to the contact info on the official website and ask if there is any place to keep track of the number of valid signatures being collected. No way to tell if this will get any response, but it cannot hurt.

I wrote a polite and respectful email requesting info about the number of signatories obtained so far.
No response on that, but I am now on a mailing list - the first one of which invites me to listen to a noted speaker on UFOlogy tomorrow night.

Nice detective work... I've listened to some of those conferences...pretty crazy stuff....let us know if you hear anything we should know about...

Yeah, more illegal alien issues in Denver... :-)

I did not attend the conference, as those are not my cup of tea. However to be on the record - I certainly do believe in the probability of other life in the universe. Considering the number of stars in the sky, it would be crazy not to consider the possibility.

I did receive another email from Mr. Jeff Peckman, which gave a little more info about the campaign. I am violating a trust, if I write to him in confidence, then post his response on a public forum. But to paraphrase what he said,

. . .Current count is unclear, because the volunteers collect them and only submit tallies once in a while. Best guess estimate at this time (7-9-2008) is about 5%.

@NotableNotices:
You are right about Denver having enough problems with Illegal Aliens. Then we have to deal with slimy Democratic Governor Bill Ritter who, before being elected, offered "Agricultural Trespass" to illegal aliens who had previous convictions as sex offenders and drug dealers.

But I digress. . .
