Will Michel Fournier make successful attempt to jump from 40000 m (130,000 feet)?

Settled as No

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080528.wfailed0528/BNStory/National/?page=rss&id=RTGAM.20080528.wfailed0528

Background:

Michel Fournier was born on May 4, 1944 in Allier, in the Auvergne region in the heart of France. Circumstances of life forced him to quit elementary school to work on a farm, while continuing to hit the math and French books every evening. “I opened my heart one day to my teacher, Mr. Guillamin, about my dreams of flying and parachute diving. He lent me some of his books to keep working on the gaps in my schooling.” Fournier revealed himself a high-performance athlete in many disciplines. He holds numerous national titles in the pentathlon, in Olympic firearms marksmanship, in cross-country map reading and orientation courses, in marathons and half-marathons, and of course in parachutism. http://www.legrandsaut.org/index.php?Message=main&lang=eng

I really hope he makes it, but at 10%, there's money to be made....i will be watching closely, and i wish him the best.... what a great adventure!

also, i understand that if the attempt is NOT made on the date scheduled, it may be re-scheduled, and the bet stands... if the attempt is made, and is not successful, it will be settled as no.... can we clarify before suspend time? I don't want to be locked into the market in perpetuity....

TOCM - You ask some very good questions here. One article I saw said he has a 4 day window and I hope he gets every chance necessary to be successful. In this context, I assume that successful means he makes the jump from full altitude and lives to tell about it, regardless whether he sets any of the four records that are on the line and at any time within the 4 day window. I also assume 4 day window is based on weather conditions.

There are several previous questions that beg for clarification:

1. If the jump is postponed for any reason, would this settle as "no"?

"Fournier has attempted his stunt twice, but technical and weather-related problems foiled the efforts before he left the ground. The most recent attempt, in 2003, failed when his balloon ruptured before takeoff."

1(a). If, say, his balloon ruptured again, would this settle as "no"?

2. Some clarification on the 4-day window would be helpful. (Are they consecutive days?)

3. Can the term "attempt" be clarified ... how would the question be different if the word "attempt" were not included, and the question was "Will Michel Fournier make a successful jump from 40000 m (130,000 feet)?"

(For comparative context, "Will Manny Ramirez attempt to hit his 500th home run this weekend?" vs. ""Will Manny Ramirez hit his 500th home run this weekend?")

I'm not sure what time this crazy man is supposed to be doing this today, but here are my thoughts on clarification:

1. If the jump is postponed from today, for any reason, including weather & balloon rupture, we will give him to the end of the week (Saturday May 31st) to make a jump. The question will remain suspended until then. If by the end of the week, there has been no jump, it will be settled as "No".

2. "Successful attempt to jump" will be taken to mean he makes the jump from the given altitude, lands, and survives.

OK with everyone?

Lesley.

Just shoot me and put me out of my misery now.
My optimistic attitude said this was a good bet for a positive outcome.

Hm, this looks like a definite "no" by the may 31st deadline....Is it fair to let it slide until the 31st? I think these news reports make it clear that he won't jump until later.
