In case anyone is interested it looks like the initial field of 35 teams in the "Americas + Carib Zone" have now been whittled to 12, 5 of these have red, white and blue in their flags. Next is the further elimination to see who gets to go to Africa for the tournament in 2010. I'm using the FIFA website to track these results.

The US and Costa Rica are the only two of the final six with red, white and blue in their flags.

The US has qualified. Costa Rica plays Uruguay in a play-off November 14 and 18.
