Will Ebay Australia be able to force sellers to only accept payment via Paypal or C.O.D.?

Settled as No

http://pages.ebay.com.au/useprotection/changes.html
visa/mastercard will be accepted

Background:

As of June 17, barring regulatory intervention, the auction giant will allow sellers to offer only two payment options -- cash on delivery or PayPal, the eBay-owned online transaction service. No more direct bank deposits, no checks, no money orders.

Will there be intervention or will EBay prevail? Something like this may eventually happen in other countries if they succeed.

Predictions suspend on 5/31 but June 18th will be the settle date (thus making this more of a prognostication question then a cash cow).

You can tell how powerful Ebay has become when you consider: how many sales institutions HAVE THEIR OWN BANK? I was several years ago in the US that Ebay forced powersellers to accept paypal or risk losing business to another seller who WOULD accept paypal. The result was that everyone (of importance) was forced to take paypal. When I first started selling on Ebay in 1999, most of my business was by check. Then fraud set it, and most of my business was by money order. When I quit Ebay as a powerseller (when the last set of seller cost increases arrived), my business was 99% paypal.

On top of all of that, right now Ebay is trying to push sellers to offer FREE SHIPPING. Is Ebay CRAZY?? Shipping expenses just went up again in May, and Ebay thinks that sellers can EAT shipping costs? It's not unusual for shipping costs to be HIGHER than the cost of the item. Ebay is also pushing auctions to start UNDER $1 American. Ebay is NOT generating enough new buyers, because it is too stingy with profits to advertise properly. So many items actually SELL BELOW $1 and Ebay expects you to ship for free.

Is Ebay studying economics with the Bush Administration? If that's true, perhaps Ebay is going to invade Australia and double the price of gas in America...
