"Grand Theft Auto sales halted after Thai taxi killing"

Unsuspended Tue 5th Aug 2008 2:22am PDT by tomg[Admin]: The distributors voluntarily withdrew the game, the country didn't officially ban it so question stands unsettled

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/aug/05/games.thailand
Clarified Sun 10th Aug 2008 3:14pm PDT by nigeleccles[Admin]: "The biggest video game publisher in the south-east Asian country, New Era Interactive Media, has told retailers to stop selling GTA IV." Unfortunately, I don't think this corresponds with the game being banned.
Settlement requested Mon 11th Aug 2008 3:44pm PDT by paul444: From the first article I cited:

"The police are empowered to immediately arrest shopkeepers if they find any GTA (Grand Theft Auto) games on sale," Ruangsak Jaritake, a police spokesman, told AFP.

"GTA is banned mainly because of its obscene content -- under the criminal law article 287 that prohibits reproduction, distribution or possession of such material," he said.

A ban doesn't necessarily require new legislation, merely a new interpretation of existing legislation such as this case.

Absolutely! We still have counties that are really stringent upon their populations :-/

Eventually all these lawsuits are going to make it unprofitable to make these games... It might be another 3 games down the series but still, people need to stop being so ignorant about games!

I agree with your comment about people's ignorance, but I think it will still be a long time before they become unprofitable. The controversy really helps boost the sales, and they certainly aren't shy about it, either. I speak partly from experience because I remember being a teenager and "buying"(thanks to the assistance of a friend's older brother) the original GTA for PC. I had seen no screenshots, seen no one play it, but I had heard that it was banned in something like 50 countries. I don't remember the exact number, but I do remember that it was one of the major selling points clearly stamped on the box when I went to go find it in the store.

I know it's not an accurate representation of all gamers/teenagers/the gaming world today, but it is amazing to look back at that game and see the empire that has grown from that one controversial game...

well the controversy can help get a game noticed, but between the huge cost of actually making the game, then defending the frivolous lawsuits, plus all the extra they have to spend on PR and advertising, and with the game being closed off from several of the smaller markets.. well it adds up. Plus its one of the types of games that sees 99% of it's sales in the first 3 weeks, and then nothing, so if it gets hurt at the start somehow people usually don't go and pick it up.

Of course i guess the threat of it getting banned would only help the release since everyone wants it before that happens, lol.
