Microsoft bought Ensemble Studios in 2001. They released a lot of AOE stuff since then, but recently Microsoft had them working only on "Halo Wars" and then declared it was shutting down Ensemble: http://kotaku.com/5047753/read-the-ensemble-youre-done-here-email-from-microsoft

Also, the last AOE3 patch was a "fan patch," I believe so that fans can continue to modify the game after Ensemble is gone.

That's not to say a professionally developed addition to the AOE series won't exist, just that the future of the series is in rocky territory.
