Since you were unable (or just did not want) to provide background information even when asked directly, I did some research.
You were right; there has been some rioting as Sourav Ganguly (sorry when misspelled) had been dropped.
This was in December 2005. The number of protesters is stated "300". I'm not sure what you meant by "virtual blackout", but these protesters managed to block a intersection for 15 min.

These reports do not explain why you expect to have 10'000 protesters, though.
