In how many states will Obama win the popular vote?

Settled as Obama wins 29-31 states

Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Minnnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennslyvania, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Deleware, Maryland, DC, Massachusetts, Hawaii.

Background:

Not that it makes much difference, after all it's much more important to win New York and California than Montana and Vermont, but just for the fun of it; how many states will Obama win the popular vote. Not to be confused with electoral votes, just the popular vote, state by state...

We're talking about actual votes...vote by vote...confirmed! If there's any doubt about outcomes, settlement will be delayed until results are made official by each state.

Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source. Because Washington DC has electors it will also be counted as a "state"

Good question. Just for clarity...DC votes in the general election. Are we counting it as a state? The way the question is worded, I'm assuming no. Since it usually goes Democrat, however, I think we should make it clear early on.

good point...does DC have an electoral vote...we should decide early on whether or not to count it....I'd say count it if it does, don't count it if it doesn't........

Just for context...if I'm counting correctly, in 2004, Kerry had 19 states with 20 if DC counted. So, DC would have made a difference in how the question was settled in that case. If we're agreeing that DC will be counted could an admin add that to the background information?

I say we count it. If they have electoral votes they should count.

Yep....count DC in...from Wikipedia....
"Currently, the Electoral College is composed of 538 electors.[3] Each state has a number of electors equal to the number of its Senators and Representatives in the United States Congress. Additionally, the District of Columbia is given a number of electors equal to the number held by the smallest states.[4] U.S. territories are not represented in the Electoral College."

Seems like a clear point seeing as DC has electors. I've added this in the settlement details.

I guess it is possible that Barack will get all electorial votes in the 57 states and Hawaii. Dick Daley is probably working on that right now for him...
