Will Big Brown race again in 2008?

Settled as Yes

Big Brown rebounds in Haskell Invitational

By RICHARD ROSENBLATT – 6 minutes ago

OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — Big Brown has bounced back from his last-place finish in the Belmont Stakes by winning the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in New Jersey.

Big Brown was making his first start Sunday since his Belmont flop eight weeks ago ended the colt's quest to become the first Triple Crown champion since Affirmed in 1978.

This time, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner finished with a flourish to overtake 20-1 long shot Coal Play in the final strides. It was the first time Big Brown had to rally in the stretch for a victory. The colt easily won his first five races by a combined 39 lengths.

Big Brown, trained by Rick Dutrow Jr., beat six rivals and went off as the 1-5 favorite. Winning time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:48 1/5.

Background:

The reasons for the loss will come out over the next few days...it just seems as if he didn't have it in him.

So, would you risk running a $100,000,000 horse again this year or at anytime...and will he be a good stud horse....does he have feet problems, or other problems that had been masked by the steroids?

interesting that Big Brown did not have steroid shot before Belmont whereas he did before the prior 2 races he ran...makes one wonder

Big Brown is racing in Haskel on Aug. 3 this year

ahhh this should be reopened... he was scheduled to race in the belmont stakes and look how that turned out when he went all ferdinad and stopped to smell the pretty flowers. until he actually starts a race, he has not run a race. the next question should be "if big brown starts a race, will he actually cross the finish line with effort"

As the creator of this question I disagree with the suspension and consideration of settlement . . . Big Brown HAS NOT run another race yet...his owners are simply saying that he will . . . a lot of things can happen between now and August 3 . . . plus, even if he doesn't run then, he still might for the Breeder's Cup....

PLEASE REOPEN . . . it has not been settled!!

He could scratch and thus not race It should not be settled REOPEN you kinda jumped the gun Just because he is scheduled does not meen he will run.

All - there was some question about whether the announcement itself is strong enough to settle (i.e. is there now a 99% chance that he will race?). Clearly the feeling in the above comments is no...

Note we settled the Tiger Woods markets once he announced that he would NOT play the rest of the season... the circumstances are quite different, but one could argue there is a somewhat similar precedent. Anyway, its now been escalated to an admin, so action will be taken soon.

they gonna pump him full of drugs and the track vet will scratch him from the race.... he's not going to run again this year

tiger woods is out for the year becuase of a serious medical injury resulting in season ending surgery. Big Brown is scheduled to race...

There is a big difference becuase Big Brown is simply his owner saying that he will race but Tiger Woods is actually injured, and going in for surgery. The two situations are not actually comparable once you go below the surface.

As frequently happens at Hubdub, the circumstances surrounding this question cause difficulty. It was suspended so we could determine the best course of action.

I have decided to unsuspend.

Why?

- I don't want to leave this question suspended long term. A question that is suspended over a long time is worse than an open question whose outcome seems a forgone conclusion.

- The probability that we would turn out to be wrong by settling this question based on the announcement is too high. Big Brown could get injured or pulled from the race. This is a lot more likely to occur than Tiger making a miraculous recovery and winning another masters this year; ergo we settled questions on the Tiger announcement but we are not settling this question on the relevant announcement here

Like i said Just because he is announced there is a good chance that he will scratch if his hoof is not 100% the only reason he was pushed in the last three is the chance for the triple crown he should have been scratched the last race but once again the owner only thinks about $$$$

If he doesn't race again, he could still draw some hefty stud fees.
If he races, and takes a spill (pray not), what would happen to those fees?
Will the owner's pride place that beautiful horse's life in danger and bypass those fees?
Or will the owner's greed save the horses future?

If I was the owner, I'd take the money, and save the horse.

I have to weigh in here. I have seen tragic abuse for the sake of winning a horse race, I've noticed though that BB's rider and owner have been very thoughtful in the care they show that horse. I really believe the jockey felt BB go out from under him in the Belmont and instead of taking the crop to him, he let off him for fear that there was something wrong with him. I'm not a pro but I am comfortable in saying that if the trainer, owner and rider felt there was a chance BB's health or safety was in danger, they'd scratch him.

Sad note...apparently although Big Brown did run again and win, he may have sustained a career ending hoof injury on Monday. 10/13...I'm just glad he got a chance to run one last time and was able to finish well. His career is done, but he survives...hopefully he'll sire some winners down the line..

High Five to you Big Brown~~~

Oh no. So sorry to hear this sad news. Thanks Bayoubear for letting us know. What a great horse! I am happy that they expect him to make a full recovery except for racing ever again.
