Will the Pentagon decide to give Purple Hearts for mental injuries by 8/31/08?

Settled as Pentagon does not recog. PTSD as P H injury

Traditionally Purple Hearts are for injuries, not illnesses, even if the illness occurs as a result of combat conditions. Now some are considering allowing soldiers with PTSD to qualify for the nation's oldest military medal.

From http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20080609/us_time/purpleheartsforpsychicscars

<<<<<For every solder killed or physically wounded in Iraq or Afghanistan, some 10 others come home psychically scarred. The Pentagon has diagnosed roughly 40,000 troops with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since 2003, and tens of thousands of others are dealing with it on their own or ultimately will be diagnosed. With the war taking such a heavy psychological toll, some inside the military are starting to ask if men and women who become mentally injured in the service of their country deserve the Purple Heart. To some traditionalists, the idea is absurd on its face, but it is not a theoretical debate - the Pentagon is now weighing a change in policy that would make PTSD, in a term only the military could invent, a "qualifying wound" for the medal.

When pressed on the question - shouldn't the Army's top doc have an opinion on whether or not PTSD warrants a Purple Heart? - he punted. "Whether or not a medal should be awarded is not in my purview," he said. "The senior operational commander in the Army needs to decide that."
It's evidence of the sensitivity of the issue that even the army's senior doctor suggests a second opinion.>>>>>

I would hope not, it's really not the same as being shot.

It would certainly tarnish the Purple Heart.

Be nice... Dr. Louis Letson admitted applying a band aid to JFKerry's arm ;-)

Ah, so the purple heart was for surviving government health care!

Also, notable, it was much more than just a simple visit to Vietnam...

In his own words:
"had personally raped, cut off ears, cut off heads, taped wires from portable telephones to human genitals and turned up the power, cut off limbs, blown up bodies, randomly shot at civilians, [and] razed villages in fashion reminiscent of Genghis Khan."

JFKerry was very busy and worked hard to earn his band aid!

Modern war is much less traumatic on the soldier than before. It would be a terrible insult to all soldiers to award purple hearts now, and not to have awarded them to all the soldiers who served in the Mexican American War, the Civil War, World Wars 1 and 2, Korea, Vietnam... The brutality witnessed in those days was on a much larger scale, but our tradition for the purple heart was for physical injury. If they want a different kind of ribbon or something, that would be better than to change the rules and make all of our current soldiers look like they are made of less rigorous stuff than their predecessors.

Then there is MSNBC and the very left "Human Rights Watch" http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25073062/ They probably want some kind of purple heart equivilant for the terrorists at Guantanamo.

"Several are reportedly suffering depression and anxiety disorder, and some have reported having visions and hearing voices, Human Rights Watch said."

The 'voices' say: "fly a plane into a building - come meet your virgins"

@f_o_f: they probably think of something different than we do when they hear the name "Virgin Airlines"...
