Any variety of peas

The Food and Drug Administration said Sunday that 145 to 150 people in 16 states have been sickened by salmonellosis, which has been linked to the consumption of raw red tomatoes.
The FDA initially issued a warning June 3 about tomatoes in New Mexico and Texas. Saturday, officials expanded the warning nationwide.

There were 25 hospitalizations but no deaths. The cause is a rare strain of salmonella called Salmonella Saintpaul.

"We're trying to get an answer as quickly as possible as to where these tomatoes came from," says David Acheson, director of the FDA's Food Safety and Security Staff.

Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source.

I was uncertain about the category, if anyone thinks another area than Science/Environment would be more appropriate, plz let me know. Thanks.

To avoid confusion I'm specifically counting warnings issued by the FDA within the United States.

I Love Vegetables, but nothing is better than wagering on them.

@ Valor
Is it correct to assume that if 2 warnings are released for the same vegetable it will count as 1 toward the total?

@ mork

Yes, that was my intent.

My money is one. I think lettuce is due. By the way, I put my tomato/salmonella question under science as well. It seemed most appropriate since we're dealing with microbes.

I think tomatoes are technically a fruit....

The U.S. Supreme Court, in an 1893 decision, ruled that tomatoes are a vegetable.

In common use, many are both a fruit and a vegetable.

Nice to know the court cleared that up, whew! Anyway, these are the foods I'll be watching.

well, far beit from me to argue with our supreme court! How did they rule on avocadoes and eggplant?
posted 25 weeks ago
wow that is one weird case, and i would have thought they could have just tried a dictionary to settle that!

I agree that was weird. Did you read the case, ironman? They actually did read the Miriam Webster dictionary into evidence. In fact, it seemed to be the majority of the case, although I did just barely skim it. Maybe you should become an become a federal attorney.
Personally, I don't think it's the case itself that is the weirdest part. It's the fact that newswrangler actually knew to turn to Supreme Court caselaw. Who woulda thunk it? That's what I call resourceful.

Caution against jalapenos, cilantro, and tomatoes.
Add onions to the list and we'd have a great recipe for fresh "salmonella salsa!"

some tv commentators are suggesting that salsa (or some form thereof) IS the culprit. apparently, after additonal investigation, salsa is one of the items that many sick people had in common.

so, as mrperfkt said, "salmonella salsa" anyone?

@cognos - obviously, the people who may have gotten sick from salsa just did not have enough margaritas with their food! :)

salmonella + tequilla = Okay. lol

This really puts a damper on my plans to go to my favorite Mexican place this week!

i've got some DOW markets to watch, and now i really, really need to go to either Molina's or Ninfa's.

Aleydas in West Palm has the best "Ultimate Margarita."
Sounds good...after the 10's digit questions are over, of course.
Back to the DOW momentarily...although this market has left me wanting a margarita! Crazy...up, down, up, down...

Well as a former Texan, I feel qualified to say that New Yorkers know NOTHING about Mexican. So as much as you guys are making me hungry for Mexican food, there's not much I can do about it (other than go cook it, but its way too hot for that!)

@jenni
I was born and raised on the lower-east side, but never tried any Mexican food until I moved to Los Angeles.
seems you've got to be somewhere in TX, NM, AZ, or CA to get what you need in the way of 'authentic' Mexican Food.

I wasn't born in Texas, but i got here as soon as I could. ;)
