Who will be the next permanent host of Meet the Press?

Suspended

Suspended pending settlement

Background:

Tim Russert was the host of Meet the Press from 1991-2008. He was know as a cool minded journalist, and a Sabers fan! Russert was well respected by everyone he knew, and without him politics at NBC and MSNBC would be nothing near what they are today.

I was up on Meet the Press ever since I started watching television. I had a weekly schedule of an egg sandwich, orange juice and Meet the Press. Every Sunday it was the same routine, even when I was in Scotland I'd catch Meet the Press illegally. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Really a sad day in politics. He will be hard to replace!

Go Get'em Tim!

what a shocker...he was great, honest, humble, intelligent, a good listener...will miss him

I concur with all the compliments to Tim, he was an American Hero, and will be missed, especially on Sundays... I'm reminded of Donne: "...Therefore do not ask for whom the bell tolls..."

"...send..." (not ask).... his bell surely tolls for us all....

There should be clarification on this question - does "next host" mean this Sunday, or permanent host (presumably names weeks or months from now)?

Yes, we need clarification: I'm betting that there will be an "interim" host or hosts for the next few Sundays before NBC names a permanent replacement. Will whoever sits in the hosts' chair this Sunday (June 15th) settle this market?

I'm still in shock that he died. I can't believe it.

definitely needs clarification

I just read a touching, and telling, story about Tim Russert ...

" At Gesu School, an independent Roman Catholic elementary and middle school that serves neighborhood children in North Philadelphia, they were talking yesterday about Russert's last visit in October. The newsman, a devout Catholic himself and 10-year trustee of the school, gave a speech and answered questions.

"He told the students 'the secret of life':

"You 'work hard. You laugh often. And you keep your honor. If you do those three things, you can do anything you want to do.'

"And he also told them how a fidgety eighth grader in Buffalo started a memorable career with the word from a nun named Sister Mary Lucille: 'Timothy, we need to find an alternative vehicle to channel your excessive energy. You have ability, but you're not using it. We're going to start a school newspaper and you're going to be the editor.' "

According to the NY Times Brokaw would like to have a say in who is chosen to replace Tim Russert after the end of the year
posted 23 weeks ago
hmm ... Mr. Brokaw did not say "after the end of the year".
What he said was:
Even after his role on the program ends following the election, Mr. Brokaw said, he expects to have some say in who is selected as the permanent moderator. 'It’s Steve’s call,' Mr. Brokaw said. 'But my guess is he’ll want to know what I think.' "

The distinction is significant, when considering predictions on this market:

I have been trying to get some insight that might help me predict this market better. I think that Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are out because they seem to opinionated, not neutral enough. I think Tom Brokaw doesn't want the hassle of this once the elections are over, he could still be Anchor on NBC if he didn't want to semi-retire. Chuck Todd feels too specialized in analyzing the math, and doesn't seem to have the interview skills. John Harwood was horrible the other night while filling in for Chris Matthews on Hardball, I mean horrible. I think this comes down to a two person race between Andrea Mitchell and David Gregory, both already have their own shows on MSNBC and seem to be very good at hosting guests. As far as dark horses, I think Katie Couric could potentially be in the running, CBS Evening News doesn't seem like a good fit for her, and she has had strong ties to NBC, her downside is that she isn't a proven insider in Washington. Charlie Rose could he be a potential person who would want to bring his interview style to NBC.
This is just a super hard market to get a good feeling on, I think that is what makes this market so entertaining.
posted 23 weeks ago
I don't know why everyone keeps complaining about Katie on the news. I really like her -- on the other hand, the couple of interviews I watched her do with the candidates were pretty bad... My money's on David Gregory. I didn't know him before all this talk, but I watched a couple of youtube clips of him and he seems like a solid choice. Guess we'll have to wait and see!
posted 23 weeks ago
@destry: you are right about Olbermann being too opinionated. I was just laughing at this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX30B4zQDbY

He is one of these guys that can feel strongly both ways! LOL

i agree with you jenni.... with both your comments.. too bad katie is not on list in question.....i like andrea too, but katie better... sometimes i think people dont take katie too seriously because she is slight and cute.... but she is a tough interviewer, which is something i respect...

I just got done watching this mornings Meet the Press. It seems like so long ago that Meet the Press was the standard by which all other Sunday morning shows strived to achieve. Tom Brokaw seems to be into the "gotcha" journalism all the others have been sinking to, and the thing Tim Russert seemed to be able to rise above. All I could think about is which of the potential hosts could return Meet the Press to its former glory. Keith Olbermann seems way to opinionated and slanted. Chris Matthews is known for his "hardball" gotcha style. Chuck Todd is an elections guru, once the election is over his 15 minutes in the spotlight will be shelved for another 2 or 4 years. For me the best selection seems to be Andrea Mitchell who is a foreign correspondent and once the election is over, that seems to be the best experience a host can have.

I'm stumped. Hard to see any of the above choices as the host. I'm going with "someone else". They still need a host with Brokaw's gravitas (he's out after the election).

Maybe they could steal Gwen Eifel or Judy Woodruff from PBS.
