I believe it should be changed to include any
emergency meetings...it would certainly stay with the spirit of the market, as vadchen has stated.
I just wanna hear her energy plan....

chatarra> what about those from the other of the two Americas...those that can't aford said gloves? Perhaps there should be some sort of wind-fall profits tax imposed on the "Big Glove Manufactures" so that all of the workers can afford a glove....kinda ties in with socialized medicine.
PROTECT AMERICA'S KNUCKLES!!
chatarra> or was it just a bunch of cranked up punks looking for some press?
Who's lawsuit crazy?
DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Sen. Edward Kennedy declared there was "new hope" for the nation in his surprise appearance at the Democratic National Convention, while Michelle Obama addressed critics of her patriotism and stressed her love for the country.

Mary Jo Koepeckne could not be reached for comment.
curios... over here, you can sue anyone for anything and they pretty much have to lay out cash to defend themselves. If you loose, they're still out the cash they spent on defense unless they spend more cash to sue you to recover said $$. This results in many settlements, ie just give 'em some money, it's cheaper than a lawsuit. In England, I think (correct me if I'm wrong), If you sue someone, and you're wrong, you have to pay their defense costs. One of many reasons I voted for Bush as Governor of Texas...tort reform.
^5 fingers...I heard that on Glenn Beck the other night.
I guess Jesse Jackson would fall into the last category...
Doesn't look very complicated to me....
infernal...amazing that you are denying settlement on intent of this market stated by a third party (what you refer to as clarification comment #9 by Lesley) when the creator of this market is asking for settlement. Where did all of the mind readers come from? And when did we stop settling markets on the way they are written? Intent is one thing...the written word is quite another. If you intend to say it's raining, don't piss on my boots and give me "intent" garbage.
I don't try to decipher intent in a market. All I can go on is what is stated in print. I'm not a mind reader. In print, this market asks if a major mainstream news source will report that an Iranian missle left their airspace in 2008. Indeed this has happened.
Cognos, get a grip....I don't see any mention of east, west, left or right....You really need to talk to your kindergarten teacher, young man.
You're a piece of work, cognos-
Don't know what direction an orbit is?
Buy a dictionary, or ask your English teacher when recess is over.
Main Entry: orbit
Function: verb
Date: 1943
transitive verb
1 : to revolve in an orbit around : circle
2 : to send up and make revolve in an orbit <orbit a satellite>
intransitive verb
: to travel in circles

unless, of course, you're in Chicago...y'know, "Vote early and vote often!"
pssst, markc...care to tell us when was the last time you cast two ballots in a general?
Cognos>... a major mainstream news source didn't report it going straight up. They reported it going into orbit!!!
As I've stated before, the market asks, verbatum, "Will an Iranian missile fly through the air and leave Iranian airspace during 2008?"
Settlement details are: "As reported by a major mainstream news source."
I think we're all trying to get way too technical. It's a tes or no market.
Several mainstream news sources reported an I ranian missle going into orbit, which by definition requires leaving Iranian airspace.
Nowhere is there mention that said projectile must enter another nation's airspace to qualify for a Yes settlement.
valornhonor, In fact, you state, "... granted they could launch one south into the Arabian Sea, I guess that would also qualify..." So, I hardly see the reason for your snippyness in comment #25. I certainly do not think that one's airspace continues into the heavens. No where have I insinuated such drivel and I'm quite insulted that you would sugest that I have. I'm simply going on your statement in #25. Perhaps it's you who may think that a nation has claim to the Arabian Sea, sir.
infernal, what I am trying to do is to use several major main stream news source's reports (as required by the settlement details) to reach settlement on a market. Nothing more, nothing less.
Acording to this market, all that is required is that this occurance be reported by a major main stream news source. It's been repoted by several. You have the links and quotes.
It's really quite plain and simple...
Again, I request settlement and an end to the juvenile insinuations, gentlemen.

With honor on my end, at least-
Erik
Valornhonor:
I readily understand the character limit, and appreciate the cunumdrum that it places on folks. I fail to see, however, where your background information negates the reporting by major mainstream news sources of an Iranian missile sent into orbit... which, by definition, means that said missle left Iranian airspace during 2008.
I realize that this was not a war scenario.
I also realize that a war scenario was possibly what you were thinking of when creating this market.
But...That's not what the market is.
The market plainly asks:
"Will an Iranian missile fly through the air and leave Iranian airspace during 2008?
Settlement details: As reported by a major mainstream news source."
This has been satisfied, my friend.
Again, I ask for settlemant and agree wholeheartidly with your assesment of Iran.

God Bless America,
Erik
Respectfully, VNH...I appreciate your intent. However, the market, as posed, has been answered. Once again, I ask for settlement.
diesel> makes ya really put alot of stock in Gallup, huh?
Infernal---
The entire sentance that you note in comment 10:
“I am deliberately looking for the distinction of a missile that crosses out of Iranian jurisdiction, granted they could launch one south into the Arabian Sea, I guess that would also qualify, otherwise it would at least fly over, or land in a bordering country.”
If it’s reported to have gone into orbit..."it would at least fly over, or land in a bordering country."...otherwise it wouldn't have been in orbit!

In re: Lesley’s clarification:
“To clarify, I do not think that the intention of the question creator was to include vertical airspace (i.e. straight up above Iran), so that won't be taken into account. (Please correct me if I'm wrong VnH!)”
Vertical airspace (i.e. straight up above Iran), is not an orbit. Orbit has been reported by many mainstream news sources.

I realize that perhaps you are looking for an armed missle being tested or shot at another nation. However, that is not what this market asks. Please note the background: “For ANY reason, PR, intimidation, accidental lauch, offense, defense, anything...”

I believe the above rebuts your objections. Please correct me if I've missed anything.

Again, I ask for settlement.
By the way infernal, in re: your comment #12.
No where in the market, or in comments, is there mention of violating another nation's airspace.
Only this:
"I am deliberately looking for the distinction of a missile that crosses out of Iranian jurisdiction..." (vnh comment #10)
O.K. infernal, here’s my report:
The market asks if a major mainstream news source will report that an Iranian missle flies through the air and leaves Iranian airspace during 2008.

Indeed, this has happened.

To wit:
TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran said on Monday it was ready to help fellow Muslim states launch satellites into orbit after it successfully put a dummy satellite into orbit -- a move that may increase Western suspicions over its atomic ambitions.

"On Monday the Iranians announced the successful launch into orbit of a rocket capable of carrying a satellite into space."
http://themedialine.org/news/news_mideast_daily.asp?Date=08/18/2008&category_id=8

On Sunday, Iranian television showed images of a nighttime rocket launch, and said a satellite had been sent into orbit. Iranian officials later said that only the rocket had been fired.
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/08/18/africa/19iran.php

"The main aim of the launch of Safir 1 was to reach a pre-planned orbit and to improve the country's space industries," Taqipour said.
http://www.presstv.ir/detail.aspx?id=66881§ionid=351020101

Iran's state television also quoted Reza Taghipour, head of Iran's space agency, as saying that the Safir rocket was successfully launched, paving the way for placing a satellite in space "in future."
A "test satellite was put into orbit," the television said.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-08/18/content_9474143.htm

I realize that other reports claim that it did not reach orbit. However, this is "reported by a major mainstream news source." It should be honored as such, even if later found to be untrue...orbit was reported. Orbit means it left Iran's airspace. I agree that this is tricky, but reported meams reported. I request settlement as "Yes."
Infernal.....It's gotta land somewhere.
I wonder what is meant by "Market is not accurate"

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that gross domestic product, or GDP, increased at an annual rate of 1.9 percent in the April-to-June period.

This, coupled with the positive growth from last quarter means that no matter what happens next quarter, The U.S. will not be in recession by October. Note the background definition of recession: "In macroeconomics, a recession is a decline in a country's gross domestic product (GDP), or negative real economic growth, for two or more successive quarters of a year."
Therefore, this market should settle as "No".

True or not...I doubt we'll hear about this in the Times or on CNN.
I think alot of it has to do with the political slant of the news source and that of the subject. I'm sure we all remember the front page story the N.Y.Times ran concerning McCaine's "affair."

It's only badly worded if one is looking for a particular answer. The question is quite clear: Will Anheuser Busch merge with or take over InBev by the end of 2008?...So far, no. AB hasn't merged with Inbev. However, AB may take over Inbev before the year is out. Though doubtful. This market should not settle, yet.

Dieseldog> These are my thoughts...certainly not facts. The term subpoena is being used loosley. Simply meaning that Rove was called to testify. There is no document involved. That, I believe, could only be issued by the judiciary, reletive to "courtroom" functions. So....I don't think you'll ever see a ciation, per se. Assuming that citation means a document.
In the interest of full disclosure....my $$ is on a bunch of the fools getting gored. I'd just hate to see a spitzer momment come up.
I just noticed the wierd wording of this market...it doesn't ask: One runner, only....or two runners only.
Perhaps this should be edited before the weekend is over
If "three or more runners are gored", that also means that one runner is gored, as well as, two runners are gored. Right?
"For this to settle YES: Barack Obama's campaign must be a primary sponsor for the car and be seen at the track that weekend."
Obama must be seen at the track, or his campaign must be seen at the track?
Hmmm....He hasn't allowed a dog in his house. But, if elected, he feels it's OK to have a dog in our house?
dieseldog> My original post was concerning legislation. This market, in particular. The executive branch cannot raise taxes. That would be legislation...which is done by the legislative branch. If, indeed, the legislative branch of the federal government passes a piece of legislation it then goes to the executive branch to be signed into law or vetoed. If signed, it becomes law. If vetoed, it is sent back to whence it came. The legislation is then either allowed to die or given another vote in an attempt to over-ride the executive branch's veto. If the veto is over-ridden, the legislation becomes law. If a party affected by said legislation feels that the legislation is unconstitutional (illegal), said party can appeal thru the judicial branch. At times, legislation is reversed...ie: the D.C. gun ban.
Very briefly, that is how the "balance of powers" works. Nowhere is the judiciary involved in formulating, instituting or in any way effecting, pending legislation. Any hint of such would be unconstituonal and would, perhaps cause our Founding Fathers to have a collective spin in their graves.
Dieseldog...the "Gitmo" thang you refer to was a result of a suit filed by the detainees and apealed to the Supremes. It had absolutely nothing to do with legislation. I refer you to http://www.usa.gov/
US Government 101
Thank you, randburg.
Who is punditwatch?
dieseldog...How on earth would the judicial branch enter the equation? The legislature passes laws. If Bush vetos, congress can over-ride the veto. There is another possible scenario, however...The new president will be in office, also a new congress will be in session...all before the settlement date. But....can it happen in roughly 60 days? I don't think so. Hence, my wager. Remember, as of yet, there is no bill.
Raising taxes is not in the realm of the executive branches abilities. That would fall to the legislature. This market, as worded, is an impossibility.
Nah...He's busy, a pet would just get bitter.
posted 7 weeks ago on Will Obama get a pet?
coolkraft. OK, so your market is: Will a war power bill requiring the president to consult lawmakers before going to war be enacted before Sun 8th Mar 2009 6:59pm CDT?
It would have to be passed by both houses before the end of this session of Congress, which I believe is January 3, 2009. Then be signed by the President, who leaves office at noon, January 20th. Otherwise, (assuming that this idea is indeed introduced, becomes a bill and makes it out of committee)...it dies.
Indeed, newswrangler....ryan- how'd you come up with "No"??
And if this doesn't happen, will this market settle as "No" ?
You have a suaspend date of Sun 8th Mar 2009 6:59pm CDT. Is this also the settlement date for a bill to make it through Congress and be signed into law?
Please settle or un-suspend!!

I realize that, dieseldog...perhaps I was being too brief. I was referring to the death penalty for child rape. My point is- The wisdom of applying that punishment is not for the court to decide. Only its constitutionality (ie. is it cruel and unusual punishment). The court erred in the majority opinion when instances such as destry was referring to were cited. That is not the Court's place. That is crossing the line into legislating.
posted 8 weeks ago on How will Brooke Bennett be found?
destry> And that is what is meant by "legislating from the bench." The outcome of the death sentence threat, as you state, may be true. That it would tend to urge the rapist to kill. But, that is the legislature’s decision, not the judiciary's. The only thing that the court was to decide was; is the death penalty constitutional? Not the wisdom of applying it.
It was a bad decision, constitutionally.

Dieseldog> I can't believe this. I have no $$ in this market. But, this was obviously settled too early. The game was not a no-hitter. It states just that in the very article that was cited as yes, it was a no-hitter.
Are we taking into account the order of the roll call, assuming both cast their next vote on the same issue?
I'm amazed that this settlement has stood. I've never received an explanation from my "Flag for review."

Hardly, infernal--just attempting to egg the guy on-to stand up for his beliefs and not get defensive. No one was putting him down for being a socialist (although it's definately against my grain). Just seems that if that's the case, why would he think it a "put down" ? He should be proud.

You obviously just don't get it, krujis.
For me, it was your first sentence concerning "world-wide criticism."
I could care less. I want my government to do what is best for the USA and comments belittling my country from a foreigner, frankly, ain't worth a hill of beans to me.
Now, we could get into great, indepth debate concerning the Kyoto Protocol, but that's not the point.
In my book, The U.S.A. does not and should not make policy with "world-wide criticism" in mind. Rather, with constituency criticism in mind, and you ain't one of 'em.
Ok...enough of this bulderdash, krujis. Please don't take my comments out of context. You read what I typed and if you have any sort of command of the language, you know that I was not accusing you of a thing. I was simply trying to clarify your politics. I'm truly baffled why you would interpret this as an attack. Myself..I'm quite proud of my political stance and if asked, would gladly explain it to anyone who might wonder if they had correctly understood a statement that I'd made.
I'll spell it out:
Are you or are you not a socialist? If you are....fine, your choice.
If not, fine too...
But please, be proud of who you are and don't feel attacked about your beliefs. As the song goes--You've got to stand for something, or you'll fall for anything.
Make a stand.

But, to answer your question: I dunno...maybe cuz he was an amateur?
lol....that reminds me of a joke concerning twins, one was a tight-rope walker, the other a truck driver. Some of you might have heard it. Certainly no repeatable here, but the punch line is: Don't look down. ;)
meandering> nowhere in the market does it ask, "influenced by" or "caused by."
mork, you spin it pretty good:
"@Erik
For the record I never suggested this question settle and believe it should be re-opened."

"I believe the articles I provided in settlement requests are grounds for settlement as they are from 'major mainstream media' and they state that the ship ran aground and capsized due to engine failure. My requests for settlement were made to help this question move beyond suspension."
You should be in politics...Which is it, what are we to believe? Did you or didn't you request settlement?
And yes, this accident was greatly influenced by nature. Note the market, please. It clearly states: "no natural catastrophe"

What if they're born on a patriotic holiday that is before the 4th or after the 14th?

Are we speaking of US holidays?
I have been known to drift, purposely without power, in calm seas...no power ever caused me to sink.
mork> a few things here--
You ask if I would be willing to kill all power and allow myself to be at the mercies of the sea during a storm? Of course not. This just underlines the fact that this tragic accident was greatly influenced by nature. Therefore this market should not settle
You may think my $ is on Asia, in fact you may think anything your lil heart desires. As I stated earlier, I have no dog or $$ in this fight. Yes, my wagers are not open to view, you'll have to take my word or think I'm a liar. I'm an honest man.
You state that you never suggested this question settle and believe it should be re-opened.
Hmmmm, let's have a look at the "Info" tab, shall we?

Settlement requested Yesterday 8:23am CDT by mork: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h_3yhnZvsE90p8kvwkFoSW99kjIgD91F46FG0 (market suspended)

Settlement requested Yesterday 10:33pm CDT by mork: "The Princess of the Stars began to sink several kilometres from shore near Sibuyan island due to engine failure early on Saturday afternoon."

Imagine that....
chuckles to mork "If this is as 'black and white' as you would like to make it out to be you would not have people disagreeing with you."
Looks like you're the only one.
Please note comment #23 (in the midst of your flurry of posts to cover your wager)
"I think it is easy to conclude that the typhoon was a major contributing factor to this disaster."
My point, exactly.
IMHO this ship would not have sunk if it had not lost power.
ignoring cyclone warnings and taking a ferry out for a scheduled run is an accident waiting to happen.
So...........which is it?
Are we to think all would have been fine out in the midst of a cyclone if only the motor hadn't failed?
OMG...When was the last time you were at sea?
krujis> If I understand You correctly...You're a socialist. If so, there's no way you'd understand or apreciate a free-market, capitalist society.
Nothing about poor judgement as a cause in the article cited. Engine failure does not cause a ship to sink. "ferry capsized in the Philippines during Typhoon Fengshen"
And yes, if a plane crashed due to weather, not mechanical problems or pilot error, that would be a natural catastrophe.
Sorry, orlin- I don't understand how you're attempting to distinguish this typhoon, and the resulting deaths, from "the typhoon disaster in Burma and the earthquake in China." Now, if the ferry had run into another ship and sunk, or run aground due to navigational error, etc., I'd concur. However, the market clearly states: no natural catastrophe.
sorry...I couldn't resist <grins>
Amazing...suspended and settlements requested. I have no dog in this fight, however;
Doesn't the market specify "no natural catastrophe"?
Isn't a typhoon a "natural catastrophe?"
Doesn't the headline in the story cited for settlement state "...typhoon sinks ferry"?
This should get interesting-
I wouldn't think so..the sinking was due to a typhoon - (no natural catastrophe)
I'm confused by the choices of predictions that are offered.
If hakapiks were outlawed only outlaws would have hakapiks.
Obama has a lapel? Isn't that racist?
I'm convinced that the martians loaded the chunks into their little green SUV's...We know that they have to have them. How else to explain the warming of the Martian atmosphere...just ask Algore.

"Darn it. We send one friggin' little SUV to Mars and look what happens. After all, Mars couldn't be warming due to something like the sun (hello!) because that might mean Earth's warming is due to something like the sun."
NASA Phoenix Mars Lander Confirms Frozen Water
"It is with great pride and a lot of joy that I announce today that we have found proof that this hard bright material is really water ice and not some other substance," said Phoenix Principal Investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona, Tucson, during a Friday news briefing to announce the confirmation of water ice.

supermodels wear capes, don't they?
Are these the changes Obama's talking about? (sorry, I just couldn't resist stirring the pot a bit)
Amazing (looking out the window to see which way the wind is blowing before I place my next wager)
Integrity means you stick to your personal code of conduct. You stick to what you decide is right and wrong.

Nothing like making a decision, then changing it, then saying: Oh, never mind...I meant what I said before.

This is really getting silly. This market doesn't ask if there is a conspiracy going on, it doesn't ask if Obama's documents will be proven to be forged, it doesn't even ask what his real name is. Look at it, boys and girls!!
The market is: When will Barack Obama release his birth certificate?
Plain and simple.
We're all trying to read way too much into this.

PS @triamathametician: I'm not aware of the frequency of a birth certificate being interchanged with a certificate of live birth. It doesn't happen with the Social Security Dept. I tried.
You state, "it wasn't stated precisely in the initial question."
Geez, Louise!! How much more precise would you like morgie (the creator), to have been??
The market precisely asks; When will Barack Obama release his birth certificate?
He hasn't...yet.
Obama's just a bit too Marxist for me
Indeed jenni........but the question remains; Gov't mandated "caring"?
Hmmmm....just wondering what donal thinks that the starting odds should have been...and why donal didn't suspend this market right away, if the odds were so wrong...
ROTFL..........i love it, perform!
That may be skipper, but note the last line of the background:
"Market refers to Birth Certificate, not certificate of Live Birth."

"If you write your state and ask them to send a copy of your birth certificate, they will probably send you the COLB, not a copy of the actual certificate"
That's exactly my point.
If you and I then made a wager that I had my birth certificate...I would loose.
