There have been more in-play markets lately in sports and business. Great work guys - keep it up! :)
I'm new to predictions on the DJIA ... what website does everyone use to track the financial markets?
what's the difference between:
Rodgers more PY, but fewer TDP (4th choice)
Favre more TDP, but fewer PY (5th choice)
Rodgers more PY, but fewer TDP (4th choice)
Favre more TDP, but fewer PY (5th choice)
the market says "will he play in the NFL again this year?" not trying to be nitpicky here... but just bc he's been reinstated, does that settle the market? Doesn't he actually have to PLAY in a NFL game for this market to be settled as yes?
Holy crap! that halftime prediction almost cost me H$2000... stupid Giant turnovers cost me another few gray hairs...
Any way we could put more advertising for in-play markets on the sports home page? might attract more betting,eh?
Eli is ahead by ~10 pts so far this year.

category editor - please edit the 2nd to last possible outcome: it should read, "2 teams tie for most wins in weeks 9 through 17" instead of 1-2 teams. Thank you. Crowe (question creator)
Woo-hoo!! Love this idea... MORE IN-PLAY NFL MARKETS!!! Maybe every Sunday/Monday night game should be an in-play market!!! :)
I'm stumped. Hard to see any of the above choices as the host. I'm going with "someone else". They still need a host with Brokaw's gravitas (he's out after the election).
Maybe they could steal Gwen Eifel or Judy Woodruff from PBS.

Yes, we need clarification: I'm betting that there will be an "interim" host or hosts for the next few Sundays before NBC names a permanent replacement. Will whoever sits in the hosts' chair this Sunday (June 15th) settle this market?
I'm still in shock that he died. I can't believe it.

I see your point now. When you said "Fox isn't conservative"... you meant it isn't conservative in the Barry Goldwater sense, as opposed to the Dick Cheney/Karl Rove version of conservative. I agree that in MANY instances there should be a sharp distinction between "conservative" and the current Republican party. Point well-taken.

Thank you for your concern, but I know exactly what a "neocon" is and I know exactly what it means. And yes, neocon means exactly what I think it does.
Bill Kristol, the cofounder of the neoconservative project, "Project for a New American Century" (group that advocated/s American preemptive military attacks with other states before the U.S. has been attacked) is the godfather of Neoconservatism, and a commentator and political analyst on some "news" station... hmm... the name escapes me... oh yes, F O X N E W S !!!
Btw, Neoliberalism is an economic term which advocates free market capitalism, cutting social services, deregulation, privatization, etc. All things that "conservatives" would support.

"Fox isn't conservative"
You're kidding, right?
Firstly, Air America producers and broadcasters make no pretense of the fact that they have a leftist point of view, which I might add, is SORELY missing from talk radio these days with the likes of Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Ingraham, Hannity, etc. Whereas your so-called "non-conservative" distorters and neocons over at Fox Noise laughably portray themselves as a "fair and balanced" objective news entity! This would be hilarious and comical if weren't for the depressing fact that this country is filled with an uninformed and easily-manipulated citizenry who can't differentiate between objective journalism and what amounts to 'consumer fraud' passing as journalism.
/gets off soapbox. Sorry - couldn't let that "fox isn't conservative" comment pass and look at myself in the mirror. ;-) Here' a funny look at Fox News' Rupert Murdoch's war on journalism on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w39FnpuMRfo&eurl=http://www.outfoxed.org/

Al Franken, author of such books as "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right" and "Rush Limbaugh is a Big Fat Idiot".
Ann and Al could not be FURTHER APART on the political spectrum. Not sure why Ann Coulter would support him unless she has a massive brain injury to her frontal lobes that completely changed her personality/worldview.

@FOF - if your definition of moderate is not speaking the truth, then no, Obama is not a moderate. That quote might not have been "politically smart" but it's the kind of rational discourse this country needs. Also, I'd rather have a president with Hussein for a middle name than one with a "W".
destry is correct. any submission of an accounting of their nuclear program to Western governments, something the N.Koreans have never done, will settle this market as YES.
@ Chatarra:
Your understanding of American politics is very astute - especially your metaphor of the 40 yard lines. Very true, indeed! However, your analysis of Obama being an “extremist” is at best a “neutral zone infraction” and at worse “illegal use of the Republican playbook!”
During the 2004 Democratic Convention when Obama first made his “red state/blue state” speech and his star began to rise, his consistent tune has been one of unity, not extremism. He has consistently called for an end to the old style of Baby Boomer partisan politics and has inspired a new generation of voters, as evidenced by the record-breaking voter turnout across the country in the Democratic primaries. That’s why he will win the nomination. And it is his ability to appeal to moderates, not extremists, which will make him the 44th president of the U.S.
Even if Obama wasn’t charismatic and inspiring, he represents change. McCain is almost identical to George Bush in economic and foreign policy – something the country has grown weary of. Yes, it's true, McCain also has many "crossovers" from independents, (i.e. Reagan Democrats) but he doesn't inspire the same amount of hope and doesn't tap into the enormous call for change that Obama represents.
Your contention that "Obama will not be voted into office of the Presidency” may come back to haunt you.
Prepare to eat some crow. No pun intended. ;-)

@ Chatarra >> you said, "My problem with [Olbermann] is that he promotes his agenda on a regular basis. To confuse that with being a legitimate newscaster is a mistake."
You and Erik keep missing the point. Keith Olbermann said the following: "Our charge for the immediate future is to stay out of the way of the news. News is news. We will not be screwing around with it. [This] will not be a show in which opinion and facts are juxtaposed so as to appear to be the same."
- Keith Olbermann, when the show debuted on March 31, 2003.
He does not pretend to be a pure newscaster. He does analysis. Why is promoting an agenda different from Fox News a problem? Isn't K.O. filling a need in the marketplace of ideas? A counter-balance to the right-wingers Roger Ailes, Hannity, O'Reilly, et.al at Fox News?

@ Erik - Murrow would most likely have disagreed with you there. He did not just "give the facts". Yes, he started his show with reporting the news but then went on to analyze it, giving his opinion of what it all meant. The Murrow legend was built on his opinionated analyses on the CBS Evening News. Unfortunately, his shows were cancelled by CBS president William Paley for Murrow's criticisms of the powers-that-be.
Also, The problem with objective journalism is that it doesn't exist and never did. The news is filtered by people with their own experiences and views. I do agree with you, though, that it is a necessary function of an informed person to sift through the news and base one's conclusions on one's own judgements.

I'm not saying Olbermann is Ed Murrow. He is, however, what Ed Murrow might sound like today, changing with the times as a good newsman should. What most people like about K.O. is his passion. He goes after the dragon -- which, as Murrow's producer, Fred Friendly, used to say, is the real function of news.
btw, Countdown is now the highest-rated show on MSNBC and Olbermann's ratings in July were up 88 percent over last year. As you can see by the market trend... I think "No" is the safe bet. Get your H$$ now before it reaches 90%.

"The civil rights activist, who has promised to "close this city down" to protest last month's verdict, said protesters would stage a "pray-in" Wednesday at half a dozen places in the city, including the police headquarters."
I've been to New York City. By no means will 6 places "shut down" the city. IMO this market will reach 88-92%-NO after Sharpton's statements yesterday.

John McCain is campaigning on this issue right now http://www.boston.com/news/nation/articles/2008/04/16/mccain_calls_for_summer_holiday_from_gas_tax/
He is a member of the U.S. Senate. Does this count as "any action taken" by the U.S. govt? Raising awareness? Does a bill have to be filed?

I'm glad you asked this question bayou - I'm very interested in this topic. However, I'm curious as to what constitutes "action taken"? Does debate on the House/Senate floor count? Actual repeal of said taxes? Bush suggesting legislation? All of those would constitute "actions" by the government whether or not the taxes are suspended, right?
99% reporting... Clinton 54.7 to Obama 45.3 according to NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/
Not quite 10 points.
Not quite 10 points.
New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/ has it at 54.7 to 45.3 with 99% reporting. Prediction (Hillary wins by 5-10%) is the right one.
According to MSNBC it's 55 to 45. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/
Hillary wins by 5-10% is the correct prediction.

Bill Maher consistently has a "conservative" right-wing perspective on the panel with whom he duels in the marketplace of ideas. He also has guests - live and via satellite feeds - who are right-wing. Go to HBO.com and search the archived shows to see the list of Republicans, right-wing pundits, authors, bloggers, politicians, etc. that he has on his show. Ann Coulter, the Goddess of Evil, even used to be a regular! Also, he always supports his insights and perspectives with convincing evidence, which is refreshing in these anti-rational times that we live in. Yes, his audience is very left-wing - they're going to see Bill Maher. I dare say if Bill O'Reilly had a live audience talk show - most of his audience would be right wing.
