I didn't like notablenotices calling McCain a failed presidential candidate. I don't think that is either accurate or fair. And since I didn't see you around, I thought you might want to contribute your two cent's worth...and you did...Thanks.

(from the McCain-Feingold question)
from the history above: "the Republican Party's failed 2008 presidential candidate, Sen. John McCain of Arizona"
WHOA! ...John McCain is hardly a "failed...presidential candidate". He ran for office for more than two years, put in an excellent and respectable showing, and came in a close second to Barack Obama. He is now going back to his previous job as one of the most powerful and respected Senators in the American Congress. In no way can Senator McCain be regarded as an example of the word "failed".
Disclaimer: I supported Obama in the election and continue to support our President-elect.
The election is over, and it is time to set political bickering aside and pull together as one country. I am still getting a LOT of email bashing Obama, McCain, Bush, and assosrted dillies for other prominent politicians. Isn't it time to stop this?

I already edited the market to when the announcement will be made about nominations. I think a bunch of us have already challenged our friends on it, so we'll just have to sit back and see how it does. Thanks again!
Sweet, I'm glad to have such an influential voice working for good :) Now if only we can turn you Democrat, we could just shut down the Republican party for good! (just kidding!)
Thanks for the market. You'll have to make another one after the nominations come out for who will win... I do think we should penalize everyone who votes no though!

We’ve been nominated for the 2nd Annual Web Awards http://mashable.com/openwebawards/home/. In order to progress to the next round (i.e. official nominee) we need to collect as many nominations as possible. Could you all click on the link and nominate us please? It takes just a second - select Social News as the category.

Thanks for the challenge but I think the days of landslide victories are gone. There are so many polls going on these days and it seems people all over the world choose to vote for the other guy when one guy gets too far ahead. I may be mistaken but this is my impression. I predict this is going to be a tight race. I'm not convinced Obama has this one yet... Stranger things have happened.

We all learn french in school and then promptly forget it. The word 'eh' is falling along the wayside, but still used probably more as you get rural. I'll use it if somebody asks me "yo, mork whadda ya think of this eh?" And I'll go "fk'n eh!" There is so much diversity among Americans and Canadians that it's impossible to find superiority and we don't really think like that. Anybody who doesn't recognize America's superpower status though would be in denial. Politicians often have to face criticism for bowing to American pressure even if it may not have been the case. Generally we're pretty much on the same page but some issues persist. Alot of Canadians feel that marijuana laws are too strict because of US influence and if we would have gone to Iraq there would have been an outcry. The soldiers we have in Afghanistan have much respect even though not everybody agrees with them being there but pretty much everybody recognizes that we are doing good there and went for a fair reason. As far as everybody living near the border...Our population density is, by far, heaviest In Ontario and Quebec but theres still plenty of communities spread out throughout Canada. I've only lived near the within 100 miles from the border for a few years of my life.
We were working all expenses paid. (a unique situation) But ya they would have preferred to be working at home and maybe could have but this project was lucrative. It was union work with lots of overtime. A massive gas plant which is a significant component of Western Canada's infrastructure.
People don't speak french here except amongst themselves. Only the province of Quebec is french and some communities mostly in Central and Eastern provinces. Canada is mostly English speaking by far. Mind you...A Canadian french person would probably get upset if they read how I just explained that. In Newfoundland and Labrador they speak English but some of them are almost impossible to understand.
Watching Palin talk has provided us with new enlightenment on how funny it must be to hear us talk.

Hey, I didn't want to "clutter up" the comments, but here is more about the "red"/"blue" thing! The church where Barack's mom attended on Mercer Island was called the red church because of this! LOL
My comments are all in fun, of course, but there is a serious side to it. In fact, I am told that Russert chose the Blue color for Democrat states because he wanted to avoid linking them with the color Red! - anyway, enjoy :-)
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/07/what_barack_obama_learned_from.html
The Chicago Tribune mentions a description of the Dunham's chosen church as "The Little Red Church on the Hill". According to its own website, East Shore Unitarian Church got that name because of, "Well-publicized debates and forums on such controversial subjects as the admission of ‘Red China' to the United Nations...." The fact that Mercer Island's John Stenhouse, according to his 2000 obituary, once served as church president might also have contributed to the "red" label.

Our cost of living is higher.
The problem with your health care is the gouging that goes on.
This year was the first time I worked alongside tradesmen from the States. This can be attributed to the fact that the exchange rate is closer to par and that the guys from Kentucky mostly, wanted to be able to work 70/hrs a week and cash in.

Each province has a certain number of 'ridings' based on population. Theres about 350 federal ridings in Canada. (not sure on the exact number) Every party has a Candidate in each riding and we vote for whoever we want in our riding. Who ever wins the riding gets a seat in parliament. 1 seat per riding. The leader of the party with the most seats becomes the Prime Minister and he selects his cabinet ministers from the Members of Parliament (people who won seats) from his party.
The Progressive Conservative party who will likely win tomorrow is likened to your Republican party. It would probably be in Canadas best interest if McCain wins. However most Canadians want Obama to win. I think the thought process is that Obama would be better for the world in general.

It may seem funny but I don't even know who the local candidate is. My concerns are much more about federal issues because I work in major industrial projects like oil and gas and mining so these matters outweigh the local issues by far. My home base where I can vote is in Ontario but my real home is Alberta.
Considering the cash crisis I want the incumbent to remain in because of a desire for stability. Hopefully he only gets a minority gov't. It is a very tight race in my riding so my vote may just count. I would have voted green to show support for her style of politics. They get funding proportional to how many votes they get.

GAds, put a cork in that dyke! I'm sending you an email: let me see if I can help a bit.
Today has definitely been better for me, and I am hopeful for tomorrow. Lots to go, but vastly improved over last week (and I hope I am not speaking too soon). I may have to eat those words.
I only repeated the statement on my own profile ONCE (yesterday), and that was a boo-boo. I thought I had it on your shouts, but I put it on MINE by accident. I then copied it and put it on yours. This one should be in the right place, and only ONCE (hopefully). You are very observant...!

You are right that I "wasted a week" but basically balanced about even. You're right that the 30K up and down could be said to be commensurate with my size, except that you need at least twice as much up to balance for the down. Most bets have 25% to 35% reward, not 100%. When you go down, you go down 100% every time.
I am also looking forward to the debate on Thursday and expecting very little...Biden is going to fumble around a bit, and I am not at all sure about Palin. Hopefully, they both surprise us favorably. We don't need another LBJ for Vice President, especially when both presidential candidates "could be" short-term.

That I can see, you are more than 500 H$ up from yesterday. Reinvesting is the right idea, but 15 losers in a row is REALLY tough...gads...I haven't made any progress in a week, just keeping going up and down (gained and lost more than 30K each direction) and am now 300 H$ lower than a week ago. Interesting, but a lot of wasted time and predictions...The next three days are all big days. Hang on tight!
68
randburg
Your net worth is showing as 3868 H$. Whatever it is, you have taken a very hard beating. What questions did you lose on? We have all been socked hard. Thanks for the kind wishes...I was lucky enough to finally hit the mil on Sept 20th. Don't I wish this was REAL money...? >>>
A big occasion is sometimes a cause for reflection:
In addition to everything I have learned from interesting hubdub members this year, I have learned something really important about life:
Every year I spend some time over the Christmas Season, thinking about all of the things that have happened in the past year of my life that I could never have anticipated in a thousand years...and the list is sometimes staggering. I regret that I haven't written this down over the years.
While no doubt I will do the same thing again sometime this Christmas Season, what I have learned from hubdub is that each of us has an amazing ability to PREDICT much of what is going to happen in our lives and that we can fairly realistically predict the consequences of our actions...and their impact on ourselves and others...We joke about "the blind leading the blind", but we have much more foresight than we think...
End of great philosophy. Ho-hum.

What I was trying to say was: we are ALL taking big chances at the moment on high risk short term questions, but that is also where the money is. The economy, the election, candidates, politicians, and the debates (among others). With your current net worth you need to build some working capital fast: put ALL of your H$ on questions that close in the next five days. You have a big chance to make money NOW and if you look carefully, some of these questions are pretty certain winners.
I understand that you are saying that I am telling you "what is obvious", but somehow I am not getting across what is really important: maximize bets, take profits where worthwhile, reinvest original capital PLUS profits in questions ending in the next five days. Reorganize your bets for questions ending in the next five days. As questions close OR you are satisfied with profits on questions, reinvest capital plus profits again. REPEAT until you are happy with your working capital. THEN, there are other ways to play hubdub. I know this sounds like "the obvious" BUT...

We have all unexpectedly gained AND lost huge sums on hubdub in the last 48 hours. The secret is to win more than you lose. There have been loads of surprises, and a few things expected. It's not over. It's going to be a wild ride until after October 1st. When the dust settles, we will see "whether the cowboys or the indians won"...You can make a lot of hubdub $ in the next few days.

It was hoped that major discussions would take place on "getsatisfaction", which did not belong to hubdub. The new forums today -- which is now on the hubdub site -- is supposed to replace getsatisfaction.
I agree with you completely that specific discussions belong under the appropriate questions. How else can you find a particular discussion again? Besides, it is quite interesting to come back later and see what has been added to a discussion...and continue the discussion...And I agree with you that the discussions (under the appropriate questions) bring hubdub to life.

One guy was kicked out several months ago for cheating repeatedly and ignoring several warnings. He was 4th or 5th on the leaderboard when he left. Admin waited a month or two to remove him without seriously disrupting several markets.
If you leave on your own -- without burning bridges in one way or another -- you remain on hubdub right where you are, in case you want to come back. The three I mentioned in the top 20 had very big disagreements with others and are highly unlikely to come back. Their money and their investments remain, but will probably not be used again. Their money won't diminish (unless they lose a prediction) but portfolios continue to grow and now they are getting "passed by" since their portfolios are mostly cash at the point and not growing much anymore.

Their money won't diminish (unless they lose a prediction) but portfolios continue to grow and now they are getting "passed by" since their portfolios are mostly cash at the point and not growing much anymore.

Long since departed? You bet! If you look at the all-time net worth leaderboard top 20, I am currently listed as #8. (I squeaked past 1 mil this morning). BUT numbers 7 crudsy, 9 epicur, and 15 rohan are ALL "dead listings" (people who are gone). Crudsy was #1 for quite a long time...Since many of their predictions on long-term questions are still active, hubdub leaves their accounts open. A lot of markets would change substantially (like the presidential question) if their accounts were closed. For the time being, I am surrounded by two dead accounts...!
You are doing well to prune and re-organize your predictions. Why not consider re-organizing other long-term predictions into short term questions as well, ending October 1st? There are LOTS of October 1st questions that will help you get more solvent...

I think you are doing well with your questions...!
I accidentally posted the following on MY page instead of yours. Here it is again:
One of the guys who did very well (and has long since departed, he did TOO well and got bored), ran his profile on make 20%, cash in, reinvest,...make 20% on the 120%, cash in, reinvest...make 20% on the 144%, cash in, reinvest, etc, etc...If you can make a modest profit, take the profit and move on to questions that end by Oct 1st. Then reinvest, etc...Try to keep your money turning over. Avoid long-term questions until you have enough capital saved up to play nicely. MUCH LATER, there is a way to play long-term questions...Have another look at your investments and see HOW LONG you are going to have to wait for some results...It often pays to cash in predictions BEFORE they terminate. Don't wait for the last few H$s, keep turning your money over...

You have a great idea about sending questions to admins after creating them for comment. I haven't exactly heard that one before, but it makes good sense...I'm thinking of trying my hand at questions again soon and must remember to do that. I need all the help I can get...Thanks!

That's ok. You're doing ok. It's very scary to cash out of a bad position, especially if you have a few bets on what is rapidly becoming the wrong answer. But cashing out not only avoids a total loss (which is imminent), but allows you to invest about 75% of your original bet on the winning side of the prediction or in another profitable question.
Point of thought: you are looking at the LOSS you made by cashing in. Remember as you reinvest the money again that each reinvestment "pushes up" the overall value of your other investments in the same market. For example, if you invest five (one hundred dollar) investments. The first one is worth 100, the second 102, the third one 104, etc, which is pushing up your investment (the same way you lost money cashing out previously)...So, you are not losing as much as you think you are...
It's tough and you've got to be brave -- especially when you realize that you're about to lose money to make money -- but you're learning to play like a pro...
By the way, I just cashed out of your Delhi Death question. I don't think there is going to be a way to settle the question without a classic hubdub fight...The problem is that the news articles are stating between 20 and 22 people dead (which covers two different settlement options). BUT a Wikipedia article on 2008 Delhi killings is saying 30 dead. Wikipedia articles are written and amended by the PUBLIC, not be news sources. The Indian government hasn't given an official death toll, which leaves hubdub with three possible options as correct and no way to sort it. If hubdub picks any one of the three, there is going to be an uproar. Otherwise, they will void it and refund all money, but no one will be happy with that either...
Sometimes you need to anticipate when hubdub itself is about to get into a mess...because there is no way to settle a question. For example, I lost 5k this past week on whether or not Jessica Simpson would be at the Cowboys game. It was quoted in advance in a news artcle that she was definitely going, but that she wouldn't be wearing her "dallas cowboys" gear anymore. No mention was made of her at the game, either by press or media. She was very likely to have been there but "out of sight" without her famous gear on. Because she wasn't seen, it was decided she wasn't there. Nobody really knows. Wow, Richard Nixon could have gotten away with Watergate if no one had noticed...

I don't do well normally with sports or the stock market, which is a disadvantage. The very top guys on hubdub are good at both. I don't let it bother me, and I'm doing ok.
Which Obama question are you referring to? If you can see that you are definitely in a losing (or likely to lose position), cash out as quick as you can. (Before it goes down further, and it will). It won't cost you nearly as much money as you think to "change sides" in the same question or even move on to another question. If you hang on, you can lose it all. Worse yet, if you hang on for months thinking you will get it back, you will not only lose your money but also lose all of the additional money you could have made inbetween. If you cash out and reinvest immediately, you can make money back much faster than you think...

The leaderboard TOTALS (for everyone) have been wrong for about a month. Mine is about 35K too high. Everyone's totals are much higher on the leaderboard than your homepage. (The homepage total is the same as your cash plus predictions total at the upper right hand corner of the page). The admins have known about the leaderboard inaccuracies for more than a month but haven't been able to correct it. Then about ten days ago, several of us VANISHED off the leaderboard entirely. I asked them if they were trying to give me a "gentle hint" that it was time to get lost! They said no.
Sarah Palin cost all of us a ton of money, and I also lost a lot of money on the 3,4,or 5 point thing Obama/Mccain this past week. We're losing on the same predictions, friend. This week I lost on Jessica Simpson not being at the cowboy's game. Would you believe it.
Anyway, you go back and rip hell out of your investments and work on catching back up again. I rarely play the hubdub stockmarket, but I am trying it this morning. It will be make or break as well. Sports questions and stock market are feast/or/famine, unless you know what you are doing...

Half of the money I lost was on Sarah Palin. I was counting on McCain to pick a white anglo saxon male, and he DIDN'T. EEEEKs! I lost on several "inter-connected" questions that all lead to the same mistake. But the good news is -- that with good reorganization -- you make it all back and more.
I'm finally back on the leaderboards, after several of us were left off for a couple of weeks. If you have noticed, everyone's "all-time networth" is wrong (too high), another bug in the system. I am just below 1M and will cross in the next two weeks...hopefully...

I know what you mean. In the last two weeks I lost more than 100k, but if you keep reorganizing your investments and getting rid of the bad ones, you get it back and more! Also go for short-term questions to try to rebuild...

Quad Runners look like a LOT of fun. Regrettably, I have never had the pleasure. And very little dirt biking either. But I am still a young man, (as say compared to caveman Grog - he he he) and may still be able to enjoy the action at a later date.

Yeow! THE STRIKE was something else. That was one of the MAJOR battles and appeared on nearly every prediction question. Very concentrated in places, and I see that you found the getsatisfaction thread. Blood and Snot for sure!
lucidstates has been very quiet now for awhile. I checked his homepage earlier this week and can find no activity for the last five weeks. He was our "born again Christian" crackhead. I didn't know the combination was possible. At best he was "prickly" as one admin described him, but I think he had a good heart. Just troubled. The two of us had a good fight at one point and I regrettably had to "defriend" him.

It sounds like you have a great gun collection! I think we all collect something...
In a couple of years, you will be regarded as one of the original hubdubbers, having joined in the first four months. Keep all of your money invested (no cash) and go for short-term questions in the beginning...later, they will all work for you...
I see you have the "hang" of commenting down cold. Once the dust settles and the blood and snot is wiped up, everyone gets something out of it...

Oh, well! Here is a taste of the old days:
Will Russell Brand apologize for calling President Bush a "retard cowboy" at the MTV music awards?
And I see that you had fun getting into it! Why not?! There used to be several of these "black eye" discussions each week...This one was reasonably tame, although I don't think the dumb bunny comedian will be back in the US soon...

I acquired the Prince's Head in South Africa in 1977. It is an exceptional (and very heavy) piece of porcelain by Mangani, from Florence, Italy. Technically, it's a pot cover.
It was one of those fantastic crazy finds, that you buy at a time when you can not possibly afford it...and it turns out to be a "right decision". It cost me a whole month's salary at the time...LOL...I starved for awhile but I loved it. Isn't that what life is all about?!

The original admins all show January 10th as their original hubdub membership date. To the best of my knowledge, hubdub first went on line on January 27th, 2008. We are still in "beta edition", still formulating and adjusting, and you will see frequent changes, twists, and turns...A lot of us have contributed significantly to what hubdub looks like today. As you become more involved, you will have a part in it as well.
We have also lost a number of our most significant members to "politics" (spats, heated arguments, and fairly violent disagreements). We seem to have successfully passed most of the upheavals, and are functioning much more smoothly today. If you would like to look a bit at the more turbulent side, it is still available on GETSATISFACTION. Some of the more heated prediction questions had MORE than 200 comments on them!
Hubdub has investors both in Scotland and Silicon Valley, and I believe hubdub has just raised a million dollar investment loan. Which means that at same point, hubdub will probably come out of "beta" and become an ongoing business. So we are the hamsters that power the wheel that runs, designs, and maintains hubdub. In return, we are not charged for many hours of pleasurable comaraderie and mental stimulation.
With time and involvement, you will probably be amazed at what you learn on hubdub: far more than you expect.

Thank you for accepting my invite! Actually, I'm one of the original hubdubbers, from the second day hubdub was on line.
If you click on the questions tab on my hubdub "home page", I did create ten questions in February and March: six were settled and four were voided. Question rules, forms, templates and guidelines were all in their infancy at that time, and it was actually much harder to write questions at that time.
I decided quite some time ago that I didn't want to get involved on the administrative side or write any more questions. I already spend far more time on hubdub than I should, but I enjoy it. We have a lot of really nice members who provide stimulating and provocative conversation. I'm quite enjoying your contributions at this time, which is why I sent you the invite...
Thanks again, and Happy Hubdubbing!

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I got my butt kicked fo a while but I'm slowly figuring it out and not losing so much. Best! John
Yeah, I thought she did a very good job. I'm a staunch Obama supporter so much of what she said annoyed me, but just looking at the overall presence and style, I thought it was excellent. She had several important things to cover in the speech 1) attack Obama, 2) support McCain, 3) introduce herself and I thought all three were done admirably. Should be an interesting race... I do think however that if she continues in the attack dog vein, the Obama campaign is going to have to stop ignoring her... (putting h$ on: http://www.hubdub.com/m14964/Will_the_Obama_campaign_release_an_ad_attacking_Sarah_Palin_before_Sep_12 )
Hi dragon,
I don't think the Abkazian market should be settled. There are so many different reports coming out of the area due to disinformation campaigns that we should hold off as of yet. Russia hasn't yet assumed control of the province, and it's still being governed by the Separatists. The market says "For yes settlement Russia would have to assume control of the province, and it would have to be reported as such" IMHO we haven't reached that point.
Heh... As to my avatar yeah it might not fit reailty but come on it animated!!! How man avatars do you that are animated and moving? Mine is so, so cool!!!!

Yeah, we've been kicking that idea around for a while now. Really the only hold up is some of the really big questions, like DOW/NASDAQ that get 100k in each market every day. It would be way too big of a bonus to the 2-3 creators every day. There should be at least a question creator leaderboard (bragging rights!) soon though and maybe if we can work out the kinks to make the bonus fair across question types, something like that too. Thanks for the idea!
Hi dragon,
So your saying you created some markets but they were voided due to them being duplicates? If that's the case the best way to check that your market won't be a duplicate is to do a search (upper right hand corner) with a keyword or keywords and see if anything similar comes up to what you wanted to submit. Try this and tell me how ya get on!
Regards,
Ryan
PS: RIght now we don't have a "advanced search" but that's a pretty good idea for the Dev. team. Will forward it.
