Following the Rule of Law in Honduras

"There was no military coup, the military was the tool of government and there was a peaceful transition of government. CNN and other news outlets were quick to describe the action as a grasp for power, which is a story that fits the picture that many hold when they think of Latin American governments. This was anything but that. This was a government, all parties and branches working together, trying to prevent a tyrannical ruler from running roughshod over the constitution for his own purposes -- trying to prevent a ruler from taking the country down the Venezuela road. This issue is so important to the nation of Honduras that for the first time in its history both major parties and other minor parties were galvanized in support of this necessary change. In a country of over 7 million people with 4.5 million voters, the overwhelming majority is in support of the government action. There have been only a few hundreds of Zelaya supporters seen on TV, but they are a tiny minority and not representative of the country."

It appears stlj9174 last logged in about 8 weeks ago... When stlj9174 logs in (s)he is in for a big $urprise.

stlj9174's quarterly gain is from the sports category: H$ 899,473
http://www.hubdub.com/p/Leaderboard?cat=sport&type=2&when=

So stlj9174 probably placed bets on some extreme long shot odds (<0.5%). Any sports fans know of huge movements in odds lately, perhaps an outcome previously considered impossible jumping to the +90% range by either good fortune for the new front runner or unfortunate circumstances for the leading team(s).

It would be interesting to solve this mystery and determine (with 20/20 hindsight) if this was just dumb-luck or insightfully well placed bets on a position(s) stlj9174 believed had a slim chance of big payouts.

Everyone's racing to settle this question.
Yeah, maybe someone finds Obama's birth certificate and we learn the secret he's been hiding all along is that he looks extremely young for his age ;-)
...would she forgive blue overalls? :O)
@destry - It's based on the fixed estimate of the population - 6,790,062,216 (July 2009 est.)

6,790,062 cases or more settles as YES.

Per splman's 50,000 estimate, only 6.79 million more to go!
@nn - if the POTUS hired you to program the TOTUS he'd have enough material for monthly World Wide Apology Tours!
Oops... I apologize curios... you requested settlement on the 26th of April.

I'm late to this depressing party. ;-)
Hold your horses curios... we're almost there but per the background details:
For the purpose of this question a depression is defined as a as a cumulative decline in GDP of more than 10.0% over four consecutive quarters.

In agreement with frogchop's comments, any negative value for Q209 and this settles as YES.

An Inconvenitent Solar Cycle for alGore
June 10, 2009

Washington DC - "If our prediction is correct, Solar Cycle 24 will have a peak sunspot number of 90, the lowest of any cycle since 1928 when Solar Cycle 16 peaked at 78," panel chairman Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center said.

Less activity on the Sun results in Global Cooling and more activity results in Global Warming.

alGore's team of gifted science fiction writer's will release a report next week attributing solar cycle activity to Soccer Mom's SUV (SMS) and Livestock Farts (LF).

Hi hfl13,

I intended for settlement to be based on RCP's poll average for 04/04, whenever the 04/04 results are published.

Re-reading the settlement details, I see your point, I didn't make that crystal clear... I apologize.

If the lack of clarity ruined the question for you (and/or others) please flag it so the category editor can clarify/fix the details or void the question if necessary. Whichever is most agreeable to Hubdub users wagering on this is fine by me.

Thanks,

Global Warming Thwarted By Thinner Coats

EARTH - It appears that despite all the worry and debate, global warming has once and for all been defeated by the use of thinner jackets. Millions have feared the coming planet-wide disasters that global warming could set in motion, but now it seems the issue is moot thanks to the discovery of thinner coats by Dr. Tanner Lewis of St. Louis, MO. The doctor says the jackets can be worn whenever global warming causes winter-time temperatures to soar. In a press release Dr. Lewis said, "For example, in the month of January in Chicago, it should be between 10 and 20 degrees Fahrenheit. Should global warming cause the temperature to be 55 degrees, then people can simply wear one of my new patented thinner coats for men and women. They will then be quite comfortable."

Following the discovery, the Kyoto Protocol has been cancelled, and people around the globe have been told to pollute all they want. President Bush said Tuesday, "We can claim mission accomplished in the battle against global warming. Everyone who purchases the thinner jacket should feel free to drive giant gas-guzzling vehicles and befoul the planet as they see fit. I myself pissed in a nearby stream this morning."

Why South Carolina Doesn't Want 'Stimulus'
By Governor MARK SANFORD
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123759827524401409.html

Interesting excerpts:
"...many people do not realize that the stimulus money runs out in 24 months -- at which point South Carolina will be forced to find a new source of funding to sustain the new level of spending, or to make sharp cuts. Sure, I could kick the can down the road; in two years, I'll be safely out of office. But it would be irresponsible.

...When you're in a hole, the first order of business is stop digging.

...Also, spending stimulus money will delay needed state restructuring. General Motors recently found itself in a similar spot. It needs to be restructured if it is to prosper, but a federal bailout enabled it to put off hard decisions. Likewise, taking federal stimulus money will only postpone changes essential to South Carolina's prosperity. Though well-intended, it forestalls hard choices we must make."

That wouldn't be a cease fire, although it could be claimed that the massive debts we're incurring is like shooting our babies in the feet.

My comment was in reference to the current administrations animosity toward investors and businesses. The campaign trail rhetoric marches on.

The white house condemns businesses that turn a profit and sticks it to them with higher taxes at a time when we need businesses to grow. The government criticizes businesses that fail with stern warnings to change the way they operate.

The message is basically:
"Success is evil. Failure is stupid. Everyone must sacrifice... except the government"

"Investors remain fearful that the government keeps changing the game with its bailout efforts, and nobody wants to play when they don't know the rules. The environment has killed firms like Citigroup and Bank of America, with shareholders unsure whether further government intervention will dilute their investment or even wipe them out with bank nationalization."

Correction: the last nuclear test took place in 1998... unless you believe North Korea as they claimed to test a nuclear device in 2006: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2006_North_Korean_nuclear_test

Kruijs, you might want to keep your YES bets after all ;-)
Everyone's viewpoint changed, not because of clarifications, but after bettors learned how rare nuclear testing is.

When this question was created, I looked up when the last nuclear test occurred (1992 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_tests ) but seeing that several users were wagering YES, I followed the crowd to make a few bucks in the short term intending to wager NO later at a better price.

Destry beat me to it! He bought in at a great price: 32%. Soon after his buy-in I cashed out my YES wagers for a quick H$300+ profit and started buying NO... as did everyone else.

If we invented cars with pure oxygen emissions and used them for the next 100 years some crazy doomsday prophet will scold us for increasing oxygen levels in the atmosphere depriving plants of food, or they'll claim we're screwing up the sun's rays and they'll make us feel better by selling us Oxygen Offsets, and a very profitable and popular Blue Movement will take the public and politicians by storm... everyone will want to go Blue.

During the early years of the Blue Movement it will be declared a scientific consensus and dissenters will be ridiculed for political incorrectness, but gradually it will come to light that not ALL scientists are convinced and the Oxygen Offset Blue Movement fad will fade away.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I'll continue enjoying my SUV.

The gain for deniers is a reversal of our eroding freedoms. Algore uses fear mongering to dictate what I drive and how I live.
Here's an interesting way to hunt wolves:
The Native Americans used two kinds of knife trap. One method was to encase a sharp blade in fat and frozen upright on a block of ice. The wolf would cut itself while licking the blade and bleed to death. The other method was a baited torsion spring which when triggered, would stab the wolf in the head.

PELOSI SAYS BIRTH CONTROL WILL HELP ECONOMY
Sun Jan 25 2009 22:13:43 ET

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi boldly defended a move to add birth control funding to the new economic "stimulus" package, claiming "contraception will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government."

Pelosi, the mother of 5 children and 6 grandchildren, who once said, "Nothing in my life will ever, ever compare to being a mom," seemed to imply babies are somehow a burden on the treasury.

The revelation came during an exchange Sunday morning on ABC's THIS WEEK.

STEPHANOPOULOS: Hundreds of millions of dollars to expand family planning services. How is that stimulus?

PELOSI: Well, the family planning services reduce cost. They reduce cost. The states are in terrible fiscal budget crises now and part of what we do for children's health, education and some of those elements are to help the states meet their financial needs. One of those - one of the initiatives you mentioned, the contraception, will reduce costs to the states and to the federal government.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So no apologies for that?

PELOSI: No apologies. No. we have to deal with the consequences of the downturn in our economy.

A pardon is the forgiveness of a crime and the penalty associated with it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pardon
Commutation of sentence involves the reduction of legal penalties, especially in terms of imprisonment. Unlike a pardon, a commutation does not nullify the conviction and is often conditional.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commutation_of_sentence

I wish Bush had granted them pardons. The commutation definition sounds kind of like Monopolies' get out of jail free card.

A friend told me that it may be that Bush could not pardon them because they didn't plead guilty, so his only option was to commute their sentences. I don't know if that's true or not... but if I had heard this a week or two ago I would have researched this, and if I had found this to be true I would have flagged the question to have it voided or changed to include commutation. Research pays well on Hubdub!

Were they pardoned? No.

People are not amoral like rocks, trees or candy wrappers.

"so wiping out a human's life is perfect accordable to having respect for humans life."
Yes, because morally, not all choices humans make are equal. Respect for life does not require respect for or tolerance of evil.

This is objectionable to some because it introduces further questions, such as: "who decides which actions and which people are good/evil?" and "isn't this like playing God?", but these questions assume a moral distinction between good and evil.

I suspect that the root of our debate is relativism.

The aforementioned are admittedly extreme. They are not, however, implausible or fantastical.

There is a tendency in our planning to confuse the unfamiliar with the improbable. The contingency we have not considered seriously looks strange; what looks strange is thought improbable; what is improbable need not be considered seriously—Thomas Schelling

In the words of the 9/11 Commission, “Imagination is not a gift usually associated with bureaucracies.”

As a community, the defense establishment swears to protect and defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. DoD’s role in combating “domestic enemies” has never been thoughtfully examined. Thus, there is perhaps no greater source of strategic shock for DoD than operationalizing that component of the oath of service in a widespread domestic emergency that entails rapid dissolution of public order in all or significant parts of the United States.

Washington already runs a $300+/- billion budget deficit and $10,011 billion debt so what's another $70 billion more? There's so many problems in the world we could throw $$$ at, let's increase the budget deficit to $500 billion!

Oreo cookie video appears to be based on discretionary spending stats which might explain the lopsided out of wack results.

Discretionary spending 2007: Defense: $549 billion. Non-defense: $493 billion. Total: $1,042 billion.
Mandatory spending 2007: Social security: $581 billion. Medicare and Medicaid: $561 billion. Other programs: $308 billion. Total: $1,451 billion.
Net interest 2007: $237 billion.
Total outlays 2007: $2,730 billion.

@conspiracy - individuals do not have the right do demand that another country(ies) pay for their medical bills. The "foreign organizations" mentioned in the article above are not forced to accept US aid... they are free to reject $$$ from the US. Charity funding is rarely given without strings attached.

You probably wouldn't want your tax dollars funding the barbarous act of female circumcision. Abortion is equally reprehensible to me, so I shouldn't have to pay for it. If you like abortions, feel free to pay for as many of them as you want. US aid is a controversial and debatable subject, but if it exists it should be spent on items most everyone would be in favor of - like food, shelter and medicine.

@deanthoreau - Are you referring to the sermon that the Most Merciful Messiah, the Lord Barack Hussein Obama delivered on the Temple Obama at the mount of Denver Invesco Field? If so, the pearls before swine analogy is applicable.
Re: "There would be rioting in the streets - literally."

If this happens, the rioting should be focused on the MSM and the DNC for failing to properly vet their favorite candidate... if I was a liberal, I would be seriously ticked off at the dismal choices offered... although as a conservative I was ticked off that there was no conservative to vote for... in a way, the MSM does me a favor digging deeper into the background of conservative candidates... most elections I know exactly what I'm voting for...

Liberal voters didn't have that luxury. They had to vote for Obama without access to: his Occidental College records, Columbia College records, Columbia Thesis paper, Harvard College records, Selective Service Registration, Medical records, Illinois State Senate schedule, law practice client list, Harvard Law Review articles published, University of Chicago scholarly articles and Illinois State Senate records.

hahahhehheheaahhee... awesome video!!! One year I watched my cousin slaughter chickens and rabbits that he raised... he didn't have a clue what he was doing... it was great fun watching him try to keep the dogs from chasing the headless chickens... he didn't have the stomach for it so he told his younger brother that if he finished the job he could sell the meet and keep the money. So he lost the money he invested in the animals and feed, he lost the money he spent on supplies to build cages, and his younger brother finished the job and was paid!

As much as I would love for Obama bin Laden to endorse Osama bin Biden...
I love it even more that, if he's still alive, he's just an impotent fool in a cave.
I wonder if anyone thinks they can impress any Hubdubber by campaigning for Obama here all around.

I can't speak for Notable, but IF Obama wins, life will go on. The people will oppose him if he tries to enact radical left wing redistribution policies. If BHO takes us back to the '70s, it won't be pleasant, but we will eventually recover. A BHO presidency would usher in another 1994 in 2010. He could do a lot of damage in 2 years, but a repeat of 1994 would render him impotent for his last 2-6 years. Universal health care (socialism, as I call it) under Billary was, in my opinion, largely responsible for 1994... In the long run a BHO win, while painful in the short run, could be the best thing to happen for the conservative movement.

Conservatives don't have a candidate this time around. The choice is between a moderate and an extreme left wing socialist. Whoever wins, conservatives will have to rebuild the Republican party and bring it back to it's conservative roots.

If Obama wins... what will I do? I will be bummed for a day, and then I'll have fun watching the circus that is sure to ensue... the most entertaining aspect will be the MSM blaming any and all BHO failures/setbacks on the minority party (Republicans). If Democrats had 99% control they would still blame their failures on the opposition. Listen closely to the current Democrats that control D.C. - they love the blame game.

I trust our system of checks and balances will protect us in the future as it has in the past.
Gridlock, baby! Gridlock and bipartisanship... slow those meddlers down!!!

@dieseldog - I heard that... stuff like this is why Obama's been hiding him from the media lately.

Here's the quote:
"Mark my words", the Democratic vice presidential nominee warned at the second of his two Seattle fundraisers Sunday. "It will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama like they did John Kennedy. The world is looking. Were about to elect a brilliant 47-year-old senator president of the United States of America. Remember I said it standing here if you dont remember anything else I said. Watch, were gonna have an international crisis, a generated crisis, to test the mettle of this guy."
@curios - that is true, Australians have more knowledge in their little finger than yanks have in their little finger ;-)
I hope so... I'm tired of McWalnuts playing nice... He kind of started to unload on Obama during the third debate... It seems "Sarah Barracuda" and "Joe the Plumber" want Walnuts to win more than Walnuts wants to win himself.
Great question curios! I hope you repost it.
And if his name was Alan Keyes I would vote for him.

Because I couldn't find My dearest dragon and notable. I'll add that to Wikipedia later so I can plagiarize it :-D

Some people use "quotes", some use italics, some use <0>nothing at all</0>... it's kind of like 'paper or plastic' --- who cares?!?!
Yeah, to highligh the sections I plagiarized from Wikipedia :-D
My dearest dragon and notable...

I propose a compromise solution... we will use the red and blue only in the context of red state/blue state (as coined by Tim Russert) to graphically depict voter preferences in the various states

This unofficial system used in the United States of America is a stark reversal of political colors in most other long-established democracies, where blue represents right wing and conservative parties, while red represents left wing, communist and socialist/socially liberal parties

Maybe he'd pay us H$100/hour to work at ACORN registering dead people to vote.
RE: http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=owA2geM8OGg

So if Obama wins, will I be allowed to work less hours and receive supplement checks for lost wages from the wealthy? Or would I have to stop working altogether? He's up in the polls, so I need to prepare for the possibility that BHO wins.
Are you calling Chris Matthews a republican pundit? I think that would hurt his feelings.
Does this settle on my opinion, yours, or whose?
Which republican pundits have started saying that if Obama is elected there will be a terrorist attack?
@s99j - Biden isn't that old... and Obama's good looking enough... but Barbie?!?! I don't think Obama compares to Barbie... but then, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
wow, jsevigny, impressive... I have $3000 on John 'Lettuce' & Walnuts McCain... I'm risking H$3k for the chance to win H$16k... You're risking H$4k to get what... 5k? 6k or 7k? Haa haa!

@dd - fascinating theory on who "jane doe" might be!!!

Before this story hit the MSM, I enjoyed reading about this in the Hillary supporters forums. Their theory was that the Clinton's didn't want to appear to be the 'bad guys' by breaking this and were waiting for others to break the story. The Hillary supporters believe the RNC possesses a copy of his Indonesian birth certificate and intend to release it as an 'October Surprise'. They read alot in Bill Clinton's comment that BHO would be a great president if he's eligible.

I suspect that the Indonesian birth certificate doesn't exist and that BHO is eligible and that his refusal to release his birth certificate is due to one of two possibilities:
1 - If he was born out of wed lock, he might be trying to protect his mom
or
2 - His birth certificate might reveal that his birth name was not BHO
He admitted this was above his pay grade... why does he make decisions about issues he doesn't understand?!?!
Eventually, BHO's shady allegiances will haunt him.
Definitely a conspiracy... the letters "Barrack Osama" aren't even close to "Barry Soetoro"
hahaa... great link... I love conspiracy theories... I feel honored, as an official member of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy, that I'm included in that theory... thanks deelilley :-D

I love this over extension: Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays. Hee hee... guilty as charged! I have the flag of the USA on the back of my evil SUV and on a few t-shirts too

Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights: Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc. I plead Not Guilty to this one... I fully support every human's right to defend their person, family and property... although I guess I'm guilty of supporting longer prison sentences for murders and rapists and, although I don't approve of torture, I don't define torture as sleep deprivation, loud music or water boarding... (loud music... hmmm... depends on the music... Rap and Country would torture me but I hear it's quite popular with others)

Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause: The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc Enemies (yes/no): Racial - no, Ethnic - no, Religious Minorities - no, Liberals - no way, their entertaining, Communists - yes, Socialists - yes, Terrorists - yes. RESULTS: No - 4 Yes - 3. Hmmm - almost a hung jury here... I identify 3 out of 7 as my enemies.

Supremacy of the Military: Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized. GUILTY as charged, but this is seriously misleading... the oldamericancentury's statistic are based on discretionary spending which is only 30% of total spending... Military spending as a percentage of total spending is much lower than oldamericancentury's opinion.

Rampant Sexism: The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy Obama and Walnuts aren't man enough to be the woman Sarah Baracuda is... she's working on that glass ceiling. Anti-gay legislation... huh?!?! Maybe in Iran.

Controlled Mass Media: Sometimes the media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common. NOT GUILTY I am against any and all government regulation or control of the media and I oppose the 'Fairness Doctrine'.

Religion and Government are Intertwined: Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

Corporate Power is Protected: The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite. Yeah, like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

Labor Power is Suppressed: Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed I suppose I'm guilty on this one... I used to be a union member (not by choice) and it seemed to me that the unions were the suppressing fascists... but my opinion is not the popular opinion.

Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts: Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts Like Brittney Spears? :-D My opposition to government funding the arts is that I don't believe ALL art deserves to be funded, I prefer freedom for individuals to decide.

Obsession with Crime and Punishment: Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations I'm thankful for my freedom and I'm not willing to forego any of my civil liberties. Just in case Cheney's listening to my phone calls I enjoy telling him "hi! keep up the good work!" but I highly doubt he's interested in my calls.

Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders This is SPOT on! ACORN won't get away with this forever!

Fraudulent Elections: Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections. Kerry tried to steal an election but thankfully he failed.

Thank you for the nice time, deelilley! I don't believe everything you read but I do enjoy the variety.
Wow, I've had this all backwards... Obama accused me of bitterly clinging to religion and guns... rather than call me his friend, he shared his honest opinion of me.

On the other hand, I find the "my friends" annoying too... I prefer something along the lines of "my fellow Americans"
@robamichael - I was wrong, too.
It's funny that they're fighting this... it would be so much simpler to just provide the birth certificate... unless there's something to hide...

Dual citizenship = dual allegiances

Obama has admitted dual citizenship:
“When Barack Obama Jr. was born on Aug. 4,1961, in Honolulu, Kenya was a British colony, still part of the United Kingdom’s dwindling empire. As a Kenyan native, Barack Obama Sr. was a British subject whose citizenship status was governed by The British Nationality Act of 1948. That same act governed the status of Obama Sr.‘s children.

Since Sen. Obama has neither renounced his U.S. citizenship nor sworn an oath of allegiance to Kenya, his Kenyan citizenship automatically expired on Aug. 4,1982.

Photo Documents Barry Soetoro: Indonesian Citizen, Muslim Religion
This registration document, made available on Jan. 24, 2007, by the Fransiskus Assisi school in Jakarta, Indonesia, shows the registration of Barack Obama under the name Barry Soetoro into the Catholic school made by his step-father, Lolo Soetoro. The document lists Barry Soetoro as a Indonesian citizen, born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, and shows his Muslim step-father listed the boy's religion as Islam.(AP Photo/ Tatan Syuflana)
http://www.daylife.com/photo/01u33pL9Ns06D

If Lolo Soetoro adopted him he ceased to be a US Citizen in the mid 1960s, BY INDONESIAN LAW. He also ceased to be a Kenyan Citizen, BY INDONESIAN LAW. By Kenyan and US Law he retained his Original Citizenships, until his 21st Birthday. By Indonesian Law he could have given up Indonesian Citizenship at age 18, but did he? If he didn’t he was, albeit accidentally, displaying a Legal Intention to void his US Citizenship, since he knew he could not Legally hold both Citizenships.

@gadget666 - you'd be kicking the wrong nuts... please instead kick the movie director and producers for all of us :-D
@greggles - excellently worded settlement and background details, and a great question too!
If the wise category editor decides this can't be settled yet, I humbly request that an admin use their magical powers to rephrase the question to: Which of these individuals will score an interview with Sarah Palin before the election?
Hmmm... I think notable & erik have a point... Who will get the next one-on-one interview with Sarah Palin? Answer: Carl Cameron. Who will get the second one-on-one interview with Sarah Palin? Answer: William Kristol

Since she's already conducted one-on-one interviews, the potential interviewers above cannot possibly settle this market. If Barbara Walters interviews Palin tonight, it wouldn't be the next one, it would be the third (or more) one.
Man, I wish judges could be sued in civil courts by future victims.
Cool idea! This would be a fun, and frustrating, market!
Thanks for trying, tocm... I would have wagered YES
@dragon - economically feasible... heehee... imagine the mass production difficulties associated with this... and what words would we use to replace Dairy Farm and Dairy Cow?!?!
Fascinating... why are we discussing the bail out on Palin's garment question?!?! I have H$0.00 on this question because I don't know or care what she will wear... bizarre that we exceeded 100 comments on a question about clothes.
The NAACP was three years too late seeing the problem (see the 2004 C-Span video linked above) and the problem was regulation - NOT deregulation. The government (Bush included) wanted poor people (high risk borrowers) to get house loans. Without government intervention (regulation) no one in their right mind would have loaned poor people money (excepting for acts of charity). Yes, I'm throwing blame at Bush and his Compassionate Conservatism too... Compassionate Conservatism is just a more palatable catch phrase for Socialism and just as bad IMHO.

The government created the problem and now the government wants to burden our economy by forcing us to pay for it. I feel sorry for everyone that was ripped off by the governments stupid scheme to give loans to high risk borrowers... but feel-good-kind-hearted-politics is contrary to common sense and profitable business practices.
Amen to those crazy Oregon gas laws, dragon... I used to live in Oregon and hated waiting for the gas attendant to pump my gas.
WOW! Excerpt from notable's link:
The NAACP and Fannie Mae, the nation's largest funding source for home mortgages, has entered into a five-year partnership to provide expanded mortgage financing and home ownership counseling to help underserved and minority families become borrowers.

Hmmm.... I wonder what the definition of underserved is in this context... "bad credit, no credit, no problem"... perhaps?!?!
Obama would love these odds ;-)
I care... so can we settle this as YES now?
Hugh Hewitt masterfully articulated what I feebly attempted to communicate:
The Palin pile-on from the the Manhattan-Beltway media elite also is working a strange and important reaction in the electorate, driving liberals deeper into their blind hate of the accomplished and popular governor, and rallying the conservative base to her cause.
@deelilley - disaster is your word for it, not mine.

@dd - My pleasure... I've been busy lately, but love to chat/type when I can.
C-Span, 2004 Hearing: Covering up the Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac Scam that caused our Economic Crisis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MGT_cSi7Rs
@deelilley - you sound very concerned about Palin's lack of experience... her experience is almost as short as Obama's... so isn't this good news for you as an Obama supporter?

As a conservative myself, I was thrilled and joyful by Obama's selection of gaffe prone and bumbling stumbling and liberally extremist Biden. I was shocked and amazed and thankful for such a silly choice of VP, and now I sit back and laugh as he embarrasses Obama. I criticize Obama frequently because his celebrity rock star status actually gives him a chance to win bubblegum voters, but I don't waste my breath criticizing Biden as much... Biden will defeat Biden.

My point in all of this? I suspect that you fear Sarah Barracuda might be a wonderful, qualified and formidable opponent. If her performance under Katie Cupcake's scrutiny was as poor as your opinion suggests it was, then you have nothing to fear.

Imagine the tables turned and Obama or Biden interviewed by someone with the opposite political persuasion of Katie Cupcake's... could Biden handle the pressure... would Obama avoid controversy by voting present... would that sort of test be above his pay grade?

Have a nice day.
I could game this question by un-installing XP and reinstalling 95 ;-)

If they break them, who will fix them? 8^)
@deelilley - Very true... said that they did.

This is a weird night... I agree with my ideological opponents on this bail-out... I'm against it for different reasons, but hey, we found something we agree on :-)
SWEET! If Obama or McCain wins I gain H$3.00!
@jenni - that glassbooth.org is seriously cool... Thank You!!!

I scored:
74% similarity with Bob Barr (I know very little of Barr but not surprised I lean Libertarian)
59% similarity with John McCain (I expected this one to be closer to 30%)
30% similarity with Barack Obama (Huh?!?! I expected this one to be closer to 0.01%)
Group hug time ;-)

I'm truly non-partisan... I criticize both John the Lettuce-Cross-the-Aisle McWalnuts and the Most Merciful Messiah, Lord Barack Hussein Obama. 8^)
@dragon - LOL... that would be hilarious if safeway sold laptops... they could display the Apples in the produce section under the misters to keep them fresh and the Windows 'puters in the Rx section beside the cold/flu/virus/pain medications.
Wow, notablynoticeable, thanks for that link... that was one seriously tight and close race for first place between Christopher Dodd, the French looking Kerry and the most merciful messiah himself, BHO! Second place is a pretty decent showing for the new guy, BHO. He shouldn't feel too bad losing to Dodd - after some more political experience BHO will probably top the list.
Wooo Hooo!!! - Arnold S (I can't spell his last name) could balance his budget and contribute to our energy needs.
because people just feel very poor

Stores in my area, price comparisons of things I purchase frequently::

Safeway - $1.89/2-liter Diet Pepsi
$0.89/can of cat food

Walgreens - $1.50/2-liter Diet Pepsi
$0.79/can of cat food

Walmart - $1.28/2-liter Diet Pepsi
$0.57/can of cat food

Whether I feel poor or rich, those are some pretty hefty price differences... and Walmart saves me a lot of time by letting me ring up and bag my own groceries... and if I need toiletries, clothes, automotive supplies, or almost anything else I save even more time and gas by making only one trip.

If I won the lottery I would still shop at Walmart (until other retailers figure out an efficient business model that lowers prices and saves time).

IMHO, Walmart is recession proof.
@banana - tocm is predicting McWalnuts loses which would void this question... I'm predicting that the Messiah, Lord Barack Hussien Obama, loses which would void the other question.

Whichever way the election goes, only one of these questions can last 4 years. I wagered on both questions for an average wait of only 2 years... I can't wait!
then we could call them "lucky wackos" ;-)
@dd - Obama's VP must be a pretty smart guy ;-)
If you are indeed who you claim, I'm so sorry for your loss. I've followed the search/rescue efforts everyday... Thousands of people worldwide know that John Parsons is missing, that his family loves him, that the search is extremely difficult due to terrain and wet conditions.

Among the thousands following this story, hundreds pray and hope for his safe return.

I can understand your feelings regarding your families loss appearing here on a news prediction site. I won't defend it or disagree with you. As hope dims it is with frustration and disappointment that I change my predictions. Every morning I check my Google News Alerts hoping to see that Mr. Parsons is found, reunited with his family and in good health.
@Erik - YES!!! it gives me the chuckles too... they finally realized they're not running against Bush :-D
@Erik - and Televangelists calls higher donations a godly act ;-)

@dragon - NO, she's his only chance at winning.

I would like to request that Election 2008 be voided so we can resubmit Election 2008 with different options. I'm no more excited about McCain than the democrats are about Obama. Pretending to be excited about nothing is taking a toll on the DNC and the MSM, so I extend the olive branch of peace and love and prosperity... let's start the whole thing over. Void Election 2008, resubmit and redo the primaries. This time the RNC could pick a real conservative and the DNC could choose a candidate with experience. It's a win-win for both sides. We'd get a conservative and the democrats wouldn't have to depend on hollow phrases and rock concerts and celebrities and Greek coliseums.
Could we possibly void the election if Palin loses?
Oh, that brings back memories... the French looking candidate from Vietnam!
Curios, did you see this game? Man it was close... the twists and turns knocked me out of my chair! Completely unpredictable but in the end you were spot on it all the way! We would have made a fortune!
Kind of like McCain saying he's a proud liberal conservative ;-)
yeah, dead people disagree with my ideology
@destry - LOL... vote early and vote often ;-)
Wooohooo.... I'm gaming this question! I just voted by absentee ballot for Palin (the first Woman vice president) :-D
Maybe Rev Wright scared him away from Christianity ;-)

heehee... I just googled it... man bloggers are having fun with this one :-D
They're looking for a sleepover with people they like!
Huh?!?! What in the heck does that mean?! I wonder if Biden even knows what it means... how did this guy get elected in the first place?!

Maybe I'm just a crazy, but who I want to sleep with is the last thing on my mind when I vote :-)

I'm looking forward to more of these questions... I'm excited for a YES win :-D
I agree with you too, curios, but will play it safe by betting my hedges.
I think YES will win ;-)
So, are you saying YES wins? ;-)
@randburg - hee hee Cricket is especially confusing today... Who will win...? YES vs NO
Ohhhh... I see... this is an ongoing discussion... the preemptive part was already clarified above... from my backward reading of comments it was like a preemptive clarification :-D
Yes, every president issues pardons... but this question is referring to "preemptive pardons"
Who will win...? YES vs NO... These Cricket questions are above my pay grade.
Hmmm... interesting... Who will win...? YES (70%) vs NO (30%)... YES is the clear leader so far.
The winner is the first object hit

I hope I don't win then :-D
posted 41 weeks ago on What will a meteorite hit next?
@ratel - That is true... but McCain doesn't need all of the Hillary supporters to win the female popular vote, because Hillary would never have won 100% of the female vote. In 2004 Bush received 48% of the women vote, while 51% of women voted for Kerry.

Some factors to consider:
1. Even against Hillary, McCain was going to win some unknown percentage of the female vote.
2. Some unknown percentage of Hillary supporters might defect to McCain.
3. Some unknown percentage of Hillary supporters might stay home - Voter Disenfranchisement.
4. Palin has energized the conservative base.

I agree with you that most Hillary supporters "would really have to hold their nose as they vote for sarah and whatisname", but since US Elections tend to be such close races, this question could easily go either way.
@dieseldog - is that arrow pointing at me, your user name or your dog? :-D
Ouchy mama... that's harsh... most of those women you consider fat and ugly have husbands that love them very much.
Yeah, real cool! If she's going to be a Lemming she may as well be a rich Lemming ;-)
"in" just means the comment was included in her defense, but not necessarily her defense

"to" would mean the close proximity IS the defense, IOW "to defend"

So rather than agree with Cindy that one of her credentials is geographical distance she instead expanded on the "very close to Russia" comment to highlight how small the world is and her commitment to working with our allies.

Cindy's comment put her in a difficult situation. To avoid calling Cindy's statement silly (which it was) she instead paraphrased it to give Cindy the benefit of doubt that Cindy really meant to say: "Sarah Palin's security credentials include her understanding of and commitment to working with our allies to make the world a better place."

Now, Cindy can say, "yeah, that's what I meant, when I said that." Cindy's face saved.

It would have been so much easier for Palin to respond: "I didn't say that," and after a moment of silence Gibson would add/ask: "then what are your security credentials?" But the more difficult path let Cindy keep her dignity.
Wooo hooo.... McCain for only 41%!!!! 10 less than intrade.com!!! I love a bargain :-D
Hee hee... all those years that I drove around on flat tires I just blamed Ford for making a stupid car... but with air in the tires it runs so much better... who would'a thunk?!?!
LOL... I like your HD socialism idea, diesel :-D We could take it a step further and everybody returns all their HD$ to Hubdub and then we all just chat about how we voted and we'd all feel really good because we'd never lose and if a question was settled wrong we'd just hold hands and laugh about it :-D Every once in a while Hubdub Admins would tell us the collective worth of all our predictions and we'd all have warm fuzzy feelings knowing we all contributed. 8^)

And yes, this is a civil discussion. Like iron sharpening iron, we are challenging ourselves and sharpening our ideas/beliefs... I don't expect to change anyone's minds and they probably wont change mine... but we'll all improve our debate skills.

I pity the poor-old-average-innocent-citizen that one day starts a debate with a person on the street that just happens to be a Hubduber... intellectual blood will flow and my $$$s on the Hubduber :-D
Sarah is more gracious than I am... I would have said, "I agree with Cindy on a lot of things but have to disagree with her on that point... my security credentials are:..."

She managed to save face for Cindy and express her commitment/ability to work with our allies all the while keeping her cool across from Gibson as he leaned way back in his chair staring at her down his nose.
It's very subjective but she did mention that Russia is Alaska's next door neighbor's, that you can actually see Russian land from a certain place in Alaska and that with this perspective the world is a very small place and we must be committed to working together with our allies... (my paraphrasing from memory)

Per the question: Will Palin mention that Alaska is very close to Russia in defending her security credentials? it appears this question was settled correctly and I lost... I wagered NO.

If the question had been worded this way:
Will Palin mention that Alaska is very close to Russia to defend her security credentials? then I would be fired up and hotly contesting this, since Gibson said it first and she repeated it (equivalent to mentioning it) and added the small-world-commitment-allies perspective.
SWEET!!!

10 gallons is just barely half a tank, but hey, it's FREE!!!

How exactly was Iraq the center of the war on terror
Liberating Iraq was about a whole lot more than just the MSMs focus on the terror and weapons of mass destruction aspect.
Here's a refresher for those of us that forgot the other reasons:
Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002 (Enrolled as Agreed to or Passed by Both House and Senate)--H.J.Res.114--
http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?c107:5:./temp/~c1073wYLml::
@notable - WOW! What a moving video... I wish I'd watched the before rephrasing the above questions... that young man knows what true sacrifice is and articulates way better than I ever could.
Here's how I would phrase those questions:

1) Why do you want to lose the war Iraq?

2) Why don't you believe that people should be judged by the content of their character instead of by race and quotas?

3) If you believe, as you say, that the economy is in bad shape, why would you increase the burden with tax increases? Why add tax burdens to the corporations that create jobs and put food on working people's tables? Why bite the hands that feed us?
So, consumer spending is an indicator of economic health but doesn't cause economic health.

The MSM and liberal republicans are wrong on this... IMHO
Kind of like a nice house and flashy-car is an indicator of someone's personal wealth, but not the reason for it. If you don't believe me, go out and finance a house and car above your means and see if it makes you rich.
come on you guys and girls get out there and save

Spending is one of the many indicators of economic health but not the reason for it.
Yeah, it was the Whig Party that opposed the Mexican-American war. There was a deep anti-slavery divide in the Whig Party that led to it's leaders changing parties or quiting politics altogether (including Lincoln for a while). The anti-slavery Whigs switched to the Republican Party.

It is my biased opinion that the American-Mexican war was the wrong war at the wrong time and the wrong place.

General Zachary Taylor positioned troops across the river from Matamoras, and rumor has it that he intended to provoke the Mexican army into starting a conflict so President Polk could persuade Congress to support the war. There are no surviving videos of the conflict on Youtube but the MSM reported that the Mexican army killed 16 of Taylor's men.

"American blood on the American soil," Polk said to congress.

Abraham Lincoln didn't trust the MSM or Polk so he asked: Where on US soil did this happen?!?! Show me the blood ground before I show you the money!! Well, Lincoln belonged to the minority party so the war for oil began... oh wait... not THAT war... the American-Mexican war. IMHO it could be titled: Operation Imperialism... or as bayoubear pointed out: Manifest Destiny

Many American Wars required artistic finesse to win support of congress and citizens. Lincoln feared that the young fighting men of the anti-slave north would be unwilling to risk their lives to free slaves. They were willing to vote against slavery, but not willing to die for it. So Lincoln declared that the purpose of the war was to reign in the rebelious states. In a way it was a war between the federal government and states rights. Big Government Republicans vs. States Rights Democrats. The Democrats didn't verbally support slavery, they said they wished it didn't exist, but blocked anti-slavery efforts with the cliché “States Rights”. (Sounds to me an awful lot like their pro-abortion stance of today... )

Lincoln snuck in the slavery prohibition laws to the cease fire agreement. Slavery was already pretty rare in the north and later made illegal by the 13th ammendment.

To anyone that took the time to read this, please understand that this is a combination of my memory and my freely admited biases and opinions. As bayoubear correctly noted above when the Republican Party was formed, I probably have some of my facts distorted due to memory lapse or bias. I'm sharing this cause it's something that interests me a little bit but not enough to become an expert at. So, anyone who wants more, for the rest of the story read a good book or take a history class.

:-D
Tragedy was the correct category... IMHO

WHAT?!?!?!?!

This story doesn't interest me much, so I've only seen the headlines... but I would have NEVER guessed anyone would pay that much $$$... I thought this would cost several thousand, top $10K on a good day... but $250,000 is sheer lunacy!!!
@Erik - Unfortunately she has to take McCain with her. ;-)
I'm concerned that Obama has a hearing problem.... the question was: "What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit-bull..." pit-bull... not pig... I commend him for hearing the lipstick part correctly.
@loriphoward - Yeah, I hear you, mom's shouldn't work, they should be barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen!!!
we have a train to nowhere project here that's WAY over budget... I wish our governor had the courage to say, "Thanks, but no thanks".
@dragon - ROTFL!!! at your comment #18...
@dragon - I replied before reading your comment... You wager on the background question while I wager on the title question ;-)

@schitale - thanks for creating the question!
haaahhaahhaaa... nice preemptive thanks! notable!

Excellent... question makes perfect sense now... thanks, destry
Wow! Destry hasn't explained flagging to me yet ;-)
Does YES mean, "YES - he keeps his job" or "YES - he's fired"?
When, as a child, I complained to my mom that I was bored, she told me to think of something to do. Rather than solve my boredom she taught me to take responsibility for my feelings.

I'm not going to lie and claim that I'm never bored, but if/when it happens I remind myself that it's just a feeling. Excluding cases of mental illness, we are in control of our feelings. Sometimes I forget that and the temptation is there to blame the feeling (boredom in this discussion) on something outside of myself.

If I allow myself to blame my feelings on anything outside of myself, I give up control of my feelings to that something else. I give that something else power over me.

So, if I ever feel bored, I ask myself WHY? Often the answer is that I'm occupied and focused on something meaningless.

If we genuinely seek and desire meaning, we will find it. When our life is full of meaning we will have a purpose. When we have purpose we will know what to do. When we do it we will be doing what is right. When we do what is right we are busy (meaningfully busy). It is difficult to feel bored while we are meaningfully busy.

Easier said than done? Yes. No one seeks, no one understands and no one does right... by default.
Woo hoo!!! This will be my first time in one of these questions too! 8^)
@notable - I think it's time for you to upgrade to digital ;-)
...a comedian from England can't even criticize our president?

YES, Russell Brand can call our president a "retard cowboy"... and we have a right to call Russell Brand a "retard comedian"
yeah, fantastic discounted odds here thanks to the HOPE and CHANGE and BELIEVE propaganda
Guys, can we please do a little less propaganda spreading here?

My favorite propaganda strategy is to quote him! He generously hands me ammo on a silver platter ;-)
@dieseldog - McCain and Palin aren't newsworthy because they can't elicit feelings of a "Thrill up my leg" (Chris Matthews) or take you back to the ninth grade...

Case in point:
"JOE SCARBOROUGH: Especially when you have the media loving one candidate as much as they love Barack Obama.

CARLSON: But it's more than love. I mean, it's the kind of love that anybody who's been a 9th-grade boy understands this species of love. Do you know what I mean?"

Yup, yup, ...things that make ya say hmmm.
She flip-flopped on a bridge and made a decision that was in my opinion the correct one while others argue it was the wrong one. Leaders are faced with many dichotomous decisions that result in criticism from some and praise from others. Weak leaders avoid the controversy by voting present.

wow, jenni... that is seriously cool... I would love to place a buck on that wager... fun collectors item :-)
she's too old and too feminine for him
I love confusing people concerning my opinions of McCain ;-) He's way to moderate (reaching across the aisle) for me... but as far as John McCain the soldier goes, he loves this country and sacrificed greatly to defend it.
Oh, I missed comment #8... yeah, you're right about that... I wish we conservatives had picked a Governor... McLame secured the nomination before I had a chance to vote... I prefer presidential candidates with executive experience... I'm voting for Palin, unfortunately she has to take John with her to the Whitehouse.
True that destry... I can't speak for all conservatives, but this conservative is energized!

I gleefully look forward to celebrities and pundits and leftist bloggers and democrats criticisms of her. :-D
BHO is stuck on hope and change and hope and change and hope and change, and when asked for specifics he speaks of hope and change and believe and hope and change and believe... now I understand Barakopolis... he's inflating his image to a celebrity messiah like status to fool the masses... don't ask him tough questions... just hope and believe and hope and believe...

I haven't heard a politician speak my mind like she did tonight since Ronald Reagan :-)
uuhhhhmm... destry, I think we listened to different speeches... they spoke of his service, his placing country first, his sticking with decisions popular or not, his willingness to die for his country...

Voting present 130 times is indecision and represents inexperience... making a decision is above BHO's pay grade...
Woo Hoo!!! She's wearing a ring... I'm happy for her.
A ring is seen on the left hand of Bristol Palin, 17, daughter of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, as she walks off a bus to meet Republican presidential candidate John McCain on his arrival in Minneapolis, Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2008

Troopers found four instances in which Wooten violated policy, broke the law, or both:

-Wooten used a Taser on his stepson
-He shot a moose without a permit, which is illegal. At the time he was married to McCann, who has a permit but never intended to shoot it herself.
-He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion.
-He told others that his father-in-law - Palin's father, Chuck Heath - would "eat a f'ing lead bullet" if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

Palin released a recording of a phone call in which one of her aides (Frank Bailey) pressured a trooper lieutenant to fire Wooten.

Palin has put Bailey on paid administrative leave during the investigation. She said she never asked Bailey to make that call.

ditto the thanks to jenni for this question

Polls are a funny thing... I was surveyed in a shopping mall once, something to do with marketing, and on one of the questions I answered, "Both" and she checked off, "Other/Don't know". People like to make fun of the "Don't know" percentages... but sometimes it's not a problem with the respondents but with the way the question is asked.

I'm predicting/guessing this one stays close right up to the end.
I just don't see much that will motivate the "silent majority"... this election has a 1992ish-1996ish feel to me... but, then again, my feelings make no difference whatsoever to how the rest of the country views 2008... which is why I'm only predicting/guessing.

I like Destry's warning on the "subjective analysis" of the Hillary Whip Team question. If he decides to let this question run, then he's the referee... if we're warned up-front we can decide to stay away or go-for-it and accept the settlement.

I, for one, will go-for-it, and now that I'm on record I won't have a leg to stand on if I disagree later.

@dragon - it wont succeed... it's just a conspiracy theory... Philip J. Berg is the same guy that filed a lawsuit against President Bush and other high level members of his administration based upon prior knowledge of 911; knowingly failing to act, prevent or warn of 911; and the ongoing obstruction of justice by covering up the truth of 911 Both will go no where, no where at all.

but... if something like this did happen, Hillary is ready to jump right back in for any reason... any reason at all.

I enjoy following this conspiracy theory in the Hillary forums. Whenever anyone tries to refute it with logic, that very logic is twisted to fit the theory. "If this is true, why isn't Hillary doing anything about this?" and the response is that she doesn't want to be the bad guy in this and is waiting for the media to find it. "If this is true, why aren't the Republicans doing anything about this?" and the response is that they're saving it for an October Surprise.
When Obama ignores the conspiracy, they see it as proof and when he responds they see it as a cover up.

It might be true (although somewhat of a long shot) that Obama has/had dual citizenship, but that wouldn't necessarily disqualify him.

his choice is going to 'blow folks away'

What would blow me away is if he chose someone I wanted to vote for: Fred Thompson, Alan Keyes, J.D. Hayworth, etc. If he chose someone more conservative than John McCain I'd consider voting for him.

Putting myself in Obama's shoes though... who would he think would blow people away... I'm guessing Algore, Hillary, Paris Hilton... actually, I have no clue!

If he chooses someone that's at least 6% Arabic, there's a huge payday here:

My comment #6 was typed during and before I read comment #5
Hi Lizzielizzie,

Thank you for the comment. I hope I can clear this up for you.

Short explanation:
Will Obama's August unique visitors minus McCain's fall to 999,999 or less?
YES - Obama leads by 999,999 or less
NO - Obama maintains a lead of 1 million or more.

Long explanation:
Basically we're predicting the movement of Obama's website visitors lead over McCain's. For July Obama was ahead by by 1,020,311 Unique Visitors.

The news that there is Obama fatigue (which could also be interpreted as 2008 election fatigue) suggests that there might be less visitors to Obama's site which might reduce Obama's lead to less than 1 million. During July Obama's site fell by more than 1/2 million unique visitors. If that trend continues in August, his lead will easily fall to less than 1 million. If you think this will happen wager YES.

Destry wisely observed that the Democrat National Convention (DNC) is in August. The DNC could re-energize the fatigued and reverse the drop in unique visitors to Obama's site. An increase in visitors to Obama's site would mean his lead does not fall to less than 1 million. If you think this will happen wager NO.

hee hee... two ways to read 'overexposed' :-D The obvious one and the other one that could be compared to outgoing and talkative.
During and/or after the Olympic games, I predict there will be a great deal of news concerning this. These issues will make top headlines on the Odd-News section, possibly in other sections as well.

Most of us have had awkward/funny/frustrating experiences communicating with Americans that speak English as a second language... imagine the confusion during the Olympics! Overworked and stressed out Chinese in the security and service sectors trying to instruct a half drunk foreigner to take a sip from their H2O bottle and the drunk foreigner freaks out thinking someone's trying to steal their drink, or they refuse to take a swig "because I'm NOT thirsty".

Then there's also several dialects/accents (Brit/American/Aussie/Spanglish) to further confuse the Chinese hosts...

Then there's also the wise crackers that can't resist ordering Flied Lice...

"Foreigners must respect Chinese laws while in China and must not harm China's national security or damage social order."

"Anyone with mental illnesses or sexually transmitted diseases is banned." "...and Beijing is being rid of petitioners, the homeless and migrant workers."

My daily behavior would be considered damaging to their 'social order'... I shop at convenience stores that are frequented by the sorts of people Beijing wants to ban or get rid of... I hold the door open for them and I thank them when they hold a door open for me... If an employee tried to chase someone out of the store (without just cause) for any of the reasons above I would argue with the clerk in defense of the victim... I'm even nice to the panhandlers when I refuse to give them $$$ (unless I'm in a bad mood - then I just ignore them - but even in my worst moods I know it's wrong to be mean to them and they have just as much right to be there as I do)

I've observed the mentally ill at various ticketed events, and as long as they've got a ticket and aren't breaking any laws or disturbing the peace (the U.S. definition of 'disturbing the peace' is nothing like the China definition) they're welcomed into the establishment.

Talk about a serious moral dilemma for foreigners!!! The mentally handicapped person in line with a ticket is refused entrance! If that happened to me waiting in line at the Olympics I could remain silent and forever regret not speaking up, or I could speak up and risk getting in trouble...

Waving banners or large signs: "Prohibitions range from the usual bans on smoking, gambling and assaulting athletes and officials, to more peculiar restrictions on opening umbrellas and standing up in your seat."

"...foreign visitors questioned whether the signs were in the spirit of the Olympic ideals, even if they did conform with Chapter Five of the Olympic Charter which bans "any kind of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda ... in any Olympic sites, venues or other areas"."

This means that even if someone's banner or large sign complies with the rules, authorities have and may again question visitors on whether the signs are in the spirit of the Olympic ideals. I'm sure a YES answer would probably be followed with a request for clarification/defense.

Beijing Olympics: Spectators ordered not to stand up, protest or open an umbrella

Spectators at the Beijing Olympics are to be left in no doubt about the high standard of behaviour expected of them by the Games's Chinese organisers, with giant signs erected detailing the draconian rules imposed on visitors.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olympics/2498920/Beijing-Olympics-Spectators-ordered-not-to-stand-up-protest-or-open-an-umbrella.html

The nagging – from omnipresent officialdom – has been relentless as the Games neared.

Pamphlets on proper conduct were sent to 4.3 million households and 5 million people attended classes on how to behave in public, including 100,000 volunteers actually working the Games. Those recruits received 18 months of instruction on everything from sports rules to how to stand about (with hands clasped behind the back or folded over one another in the front).
"Slow down, wake up, pay attention, stop it, don't touch that, watch where you're going, quiet down, no, no, NO!"

That's it... I'm NOT going to the Olympic Games this year! ;-)
@bayoubear - Thanks for the clarification on this
The GOP drives me nuts!!! When they are large and in charge they do nothing. As soon as they are the underdogs they get busy and work hard.

The goals of the American Energy Act (http://www.gop.gov/energy/americanenergyact/) are nothing new. While the rest of the world expanded energy production we sat on our hands for the last decade to avoid offending some squirrel or moose or tadpole. We have the best technology in the world so I'm sure we can drill here, drill now and pay less in a much safer manner than third world countries do.

Maybe I'm wrong, but from my memory it seemed the GOP accomplished more during Clinton's Presidency than during Bush's Presidency... maybe during an Obamama Presidency the GOP would work hard on privatizing social security, controlling govt spending, lowering taxes, school choice, expanding domestic drilling, securing our borders, etc etc

They didn't do these things when they had the Whitehouse, Congress and Senate and I doubt they'd do any of this with John McCan't as president either.
@dieseldog - Great question!

By tradition and by law, Congress recesses for the month of August, so since it's pretty unlikely that the August Recess will be broken for any reason, I'm ok with a YES settlement if they come back for any reasons.

I'm hoping that pressure from the people and from the president and from the GOP will bring them back.
Just testing the Commenting on Wagers functionality... and hoping the Speaker calls Congress back to work on this!

@chatarra - oh yeah lmao hee hee best laugh I've had all day!
Thanks, newswrangler.

Regarding this story, this is my favorite quote: "People act like they never heard of a kid who didn't behave before," she said. LOL It's a bit of a stretch to describe stealing cars, high-speed police chases, breaking into and vandalizing an apartment, etc. etc. etc. as typical 9-year-old misbehavior.
So, he's currently at home with his mom, under 24-hour house arrest.

Does this satisfy any of the settlement options? Would house arrest count as Semaj sentenced to some form of detention or as Any other outcome?
Mother's parenting skills will be reviewed
In an action that appeared to surprise both prosecutors and defense attorneys Thursday, Pierce County Superior Court Judge Frank Cuthbertson ordered the court's probation officer to file a dependency petition with the state, which would look into whether Semaj and his siblings are being responsibly cared for.

Semaj was released to 24-hour house arrest this week after spending more than three weeks in juvenile detention.

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that he didn't know he hit someone...
Thank you, bayoubear!
hahaha... funny!
If Casey used Caylee as collateral to borrow money... would this settle as YES?

Another unlikely (but possible) scenario could be that Caylee was kidnapped by someone Casey owed money too, which would obviously settle as NO.

This is a strange case, indeed.
Probably not dying, but I wagered H$100 YES just in case...

@bayoubear, superusers and admins:

HELP!!!

This question is being spitzered!

Per the background info:
The price for 'gasoline-all grades' as reported by the Energy Information Administration has been above $4 for five weeks now, dating back to the June 2 report.

When will this price drop below $4?

Data is the weekly report from the EIA for gasoline-all grades, an average of all types of gasoline blends sold in the US.

http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_gnd_dcus_nus_w.htm

The price for 'gasoline-all grades' as reported by the Energy Information Administration is currently $401.0 but users are requesting settlement based on regular gas price as reported by other sources.
@bobbyedwards - that article concerns regular gasoline. This market is tracking 'gasoline-all grades' as reported here: http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/dnav/pet/pet_pri_gnd_dcus_nus_w.htm

The average price for 'gasoline-all grades' is currently $411.8
Barack Obama: The Child - The Messiah - The Obamessiah

Read the background article destry... this has happened before...
Indian athlete Santhi Soundarajan was stripped of an Asian Games silver medal in 2006 after failing a gender verification test.
True that, Destry... that's why "None of the Above During August" is the highest percentage as there may not be any news reported concerning Bush touring/surveying fire damage or attending Bar-B-Qs or Obama swimming or walking over wet surfaces.

If Obama takes Cameron's advice to spend some time at the beach, it would certainly be reported in the news where he vacations to: "You should be on the beach," Cameron told Obama. "You need a break. Well, you need to be able to keep your head together."
WOW! Thanks for the compliment kruijs!!!

I must confess though that I possess a great deal less valor and honor than valornhonor :-D
Hey Ryanj... yeah - that's a good idea. I would prefer liberal settlement rules on this one so that there's at least a 50% chance that one of the first two options occur during August so that our wagers are predicting which first. Obama in an area where it's extremely likely he walked on water (including walking on a wet surface) or Bush walking with fire (including Bush visiting an area damaged by fire or in an area commonly known to burn candles)

What prompted my imagination on this one is Obama's superstar status and a question in the user comments section of one of the news articles, something to the effect of "...what will he do next, walk on water?" (not exact quote... I'm paraphrasing from memory)

Then there's also a great deal of satire on the net likening Obama to a messiah. For example: Is Barack Obama the Messiah? http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/

So this is my feeble attempt at joining in on the fun of creating satire centered around the news.

I welcome any and all suggestions/comments from you and other users to nail down the settlement details so we know which news articles to watch for during August.

Thanks!

we're not predicting whether or not the ban can be enforced... just whether they pass a law banning tobacco
@hubdubbob - the difference it makes depends on how you wagered ;-)
I flagged this settlement. There's 11 days left during which Pakistani soldiers might become casualties too.

Quoted from background info above:
Question should not suspend until the end of July or until all options have had an opportunity to play out.
@bayoubear - clarification please: the question refers to "regular gasoline" and the background reads "We're using the gasoline-all grades for settlement"

Which is your intent for settlement? (regular or all grades)

Thank you!

I followed my initial NO wager with a YES wager after clarification from coolkraft (comment #3 above)

I've invested HD$ on opposite sides of two different questions today... I should have stayed in bed today ;-D
@curios - yeah, the placement of electrocution at the end threw me off too. Moving electrocution to the middle of the sentence changes the meaning: "Will any US contractors be punished for the electrocution deaths of American soldiers in Iraq?"

There... I fixed it... hedged my bets with HD$5K on YES and NO :-D
OOOOOPPPSSS!!! I overlooked the "Jan-Jul" in the title question... my bad!

Oh well, looks like Entertainment will remain one of my weaker categories
Some describe Obama as messiah and the Joker as devil.... scary, scary, I'm wagering evil prevails (or at least the lesser of the two evils)
Yup... a singly bid by me... Entertainment is one of my weaker categories... so this HD$ 5K might change that
My knee jerk prediction is YES... but I like to research all sides... I'm searching google for Crane Safety Facts and Statistics and I am curious to know how many construction cranes operate on a daily basis and the historical safety track record of cranes.

Anyone here with construction knowledge? Anybody have links to share?

We need Epicur!!! Please come back and share your knowledge!!!
@gluckman - You are correct... if one is lost or stolen prior to 2009 we may never hear about it. Per the background details, "Will a major mainstream news source report that one of these devices have been lost or stolen prior to 2009?", this will settle as YES if it's reported and NO if there are no reports.
Do I understand this correctly, that for a YES settlement, a US contractor must be punished by electrocution?
@intlibber - WOW... You put some serious research into GW... thanks for sharing!
anyone have any links to more info on this?

Sure, a natural disaster could wipe out the entire east coast, and that'd kill this movie, otherwise, Will Smith will reign once again on the mega 4th of July weekend!

Hey Lucid, that would be a cool and fun and wacky Hubdub question: Will it be reported that any natural disasters diminished Will Smith's mega 4th of July weekend?
@chatarra - You're probably right about that... I imagined a 'leaper' would go limp and go with the flow... but as you say that would require one to be a "pretty cool cucumber".
That’s apparently why “fingers of fury” suggests that opendna’s posting is where the alleged forgeries may have originated…….presumably because they would be easier to alter

The city has sent a letter to Pabst, and they are now issuing citations to businesses with the billboards, saying they must paint over them."

Controversial Ad Painted Over
PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ― A fresh coat of paint has been placed over a controversial graffiti-style ad for malt liquor seen on Philadelphia buildings.
CBS 3 cameras were at Girard Avenue and Palmer Street where a large mural ad for Colt 45 was painted over after causing controversy in the neighborhood.
Philadelphia's Department of Licenses and Inspections issued four citations to Pabst Brewing, the maker of Colt 45, for not having proper permits for the large displays.
Members of the city's non-profit Mural Arts Program complained the ads were distasteful and should be removed because they were not placed in an area zoned for advertising.
