Open Letter to Management of HUBDUB

I have had a fun time for a while with your website. I really believe you have a very good workable and innovative concept here. The unfortunate thing is that some of the people that function as category editors are killing it. There are some genuinely good ones, Tisha Dejmanee, Jim Pettit and especially Jenni Peterson and John Neblett, to name a few. Unfortunately, there are others that are chronically late with settlement, do not communicate with players and, most infuriatingly, void questions for arbitrary and sometimes bizarre reasons.
For a site that heavily depends on users’ willingness to make it work, it is not smart to piss such people off for no reason. It is very frustrating to spend time creating questions only to have a juvenile who can’t even spell, construct a cogent sentence or understand basic concepts of probability void them (yes, I’m talking about Jacobs). I will give you an example of what I’m talking about. My market asked the high/low/neither question for high temp and set the starting odds at 40% for hitting the high limit of 92 degrees at a time when the forecast called for a high of 90 (2 degrees below). My reasoning was that if the forecast calls for 92 degrees, chances are 50-50 of actually getting there. So, when they call for a high 2 degrees below the high limit of my market, the odds must be somewhere below that 50-50. The CatEd voided my question arguing the odds should have been 60%! I quote his explanation: “The odds when the market was initially put up should have been much closer to 60% for reaching 92, this even though it might not reach 92. This is because 60% odds don't represent anything certain either but are much closer to the probable reality of the situation” (note the elegant turn of phrase) How can the odds of something predicted NOT to happen be greater than 50%??? http://www.hubdub.com/m39743/What_will_the_high_temp_in_Washington_DC_do_next_Will_we_hit_92_degrees_or_60_degrees_F
The last void was also annoying and what makes it worse is that he lies afterwards about having communicated about the issue previously. There is no comment from him on my previous rain related markets, nor can I find an e-mail. He is hurting your business and you need to take decisive action before he ruins it. A site that depends on the goodwill of its users needs to enhance the user experience, not annoy users needlessly. I created 195 markets, some with over H$200,000 wagered, posted 460 comments and earned over a million H$ in under 6 months. You have a limited number of active players, why would you risk losing them? My friend randburg, 3rd on the leaderboard has also reached his limit and is about to go elsewhere. Others before him have done the same. Randburg’s suggestions on how to improve the site and those of others have been ignored. I felt compelled to post this letter because I truly believe that there is great potential for this site to grow and thrive, but only if you listen to the words of your customers, something any successful business knows it must do. The future of hubdub is in your hands.

Hello Jenny, It looks like the void time was miscalculated on the Susan Boyle hospitalization question. The first news story reporting that Susan Boyle was taken to a hospital did not post until 1:25 am (London Time) and yet the void time was set for 6 pm (a full 7 hours before the first news story was published confirming her hospitalization).

I was confused when I created all those HSX markets about what exactly "four weeks" was. I didn't know if it included the handful of weekdays after the 4th weekend, but I thought it would be kind of weird for the cut-off date to be on a Tuesday or Wednesday. I couldn't find anything on HSX about it either. So I decided that "four weeks" probably meant "four weekends". But if you and hfl say otherwise, that's fine! I'm glad for the clarification!

We have such interesting people on hubdub. Some seem a bit (maybe a lot) acerbic at first, but are very interesting and friendly as you come to know them. We also have a lot of very widely varying viewpoints, but most get along remarkably well (most of the time)...

I guess you have noticed that I have been campaigning with Nigel and Tisha for an ADMINS AND SUPERUSERS APPRECIATION DAY. I think it would be fun to have a day (or even a week) when we could express our appreciation (and maybe even have some kind of event in their honor) whereby we can say thanks for all the hard work "you guys" put into hubdub for us. We don't always agree with what you do and might have an occasional disagreement, but 99.99% of the time hubdub runs pretty smoothly and efficiently due largely to all the terrific efforts of our Admins and Superusers. I keep getting told "great idea" and "soon"...?

Thank Goodness Barack Obama has proven by the way HE handled this question, that he is a better man than us lowly hubdubbers attempting to handle this question...

But we know more than the news sources that we are trying to predict anyway...Right? (I guess that NBC's Brian Williams couldn't possibly have been right). So Barack Obama should have echoed the incorrect "YOU" to the Chief Justice who flubbed his lines....It just gets "curiouser" and "curiouser"...And as fast as I can get my hubdub portfolio reset, I am going to take another week off. Obviously last week was not enough...

It's still settled incorrectly. If "so help you God" & "so help me God" is the basis for the settlement, it was a trick question to start with, with wrong starting odds. Odds should have been 100% on impossible to repeat correctly. If the president-elect had repeated so help YOU God identically, referring to the Chief Justice in the process, it would have shown astounding stupidity on the part of the new President. If this is the situation, maybe the question should be voided entirely as impossible to settle? What kind of oath administered as "so help YOU God" is going to be repeated by the oath taker as "so help YOU God"? What is the logic in that? The oath GIVER is NOT the oath taker. What's going on here? Valor writes excellent questions: I am sure that he didn't have a trick question in mind.

I liked living out there...I remember in the winter, driving past this beautiful farm in Warwick (home to everybody named Quakenbush) and seeing the snow covered pastures with horses, complete with the big red barn. The backdrop being a small mountain, not unlike what I have here in Oregon now....breathtakingly beautiful...and christmas card perfect.

I moved from there in the summer of 88, to Michigan, which is where I grew up. I miss NY. The people were among the warmest and most colorful I've ever met.

Can you explain something to me?

Earlier today, bout 1pm PST, I cashed out early on predictions that netted me a little over 4 k. At that point I was hovering around 23 k and I fully expected to be credited within a hour, pushing me over the 25 k mark so I'd become a 'guru'.

Instead what happened is that my net worth plummeted 2k around 4pm PST and so far I've only received 2k back from the cash in.

It's well known that they're writing him out, but one wonders what will be the circumstances or his character's reason for leaving the CSI unit. You can probably construct such a question better than most of us.

I genuinely admire the fine work you do on hubdub and regard myself as one of your supporters. I am also an Obama supporter, but I must take strong exception to the weekly Presidential Favorability Prediction. After looking at this question for two weeks, I have left a long comment on the prediction and flagged it for review.

While the election is supposed to be over, and even John McCain asked America to pull together with their new President-elect, questions like this keep the Obama-McCain Civil War "alive and well"...If presidential favorability ratings are deemed newsworthy, can the question be separted into two questions, so that we can compare Obama to Obama and/or Bush to Bush? While hubdub is primarily liberal in it's membership orientation (and hubdub does not seem responsible for picking it's membership that way), we do have a definite verbal conservative faction that deserves some respect. As it stands, this question amounts to weekly "Bush bashing", and the conservatives are getting the blunt end of the stick.

I send these thoughts with respect and hope they will be considered that way. Thanks again.

Jenni - my question (the one you suggested) about the 1's digit for electoral vote was voided saying it was a lottery7 type question. However, each day there's a question about the 10's digit in the business category. This seems inconsistent to me.

It sounds like you have a very knowledgeable prof. Is he/she a solar physicist? If so, I might know him/her.... ..

I could put one in, but for two reasons am reluctant to.
1) I am a ringer.. I know what the outcome is going to be (because of my specialized knowledge). Nevertheless, I could not bet on it, so that would be ok.
2) Of more concern, is that the solar maximum will be several years away 2012 or so, so although one can discern whether it will be a large cycle based "on the trajectory" as u say, exactly how large would still be uncertain , if based only on the trajectory...
So, using the trajectory, there would be an uncertain cutoff date too, because the startup is a very erratic process -- we have had a couple of spots in the last month -- a very small start.. does this mean it is delayed, or will be low? or what? Things on the sun move very slowly (years, not months, I am afraid)...

Right now, I am supporting the UK's Mark Cavendish, Spain, USA and other European country because I think Denmark might surprise everyone. Would like your opinion an an olympic question. I have found many sites/forums/blogs that have early predictions on who will win the individual apparatus medals in gymnastics.
However there is a qualification round and only the top eight scores from each apparatus continue on to the final of that event and chance for medal.
So, question is - Would it be better to wait until the eight finalists are known for each apparatus before asking, or ask early but run the risk of some names might not even make finals. There is a week between qualifications and the event finals which leaves plenty of time for these questions to be asked and wagering. Just checking to see if your opinion is like mine and to wait till the finalists are known.
I found a few good sites for the gymnastics info, among them is this forum I check almost daily. It seems to have pretty knowledgeable users.

Hijacking index questions? I think there is serious questions about whether predicting the 10's digit of the dow is newsworthy, but it is a fun question. Something like a lottery. I wish business questions were treated same way as sports markets and suspended before they started. But that isn't how it is.
I don't see any harm in experimenting with the suspending times. I made sure it was clearly marked on each market I "hijacked".

I like the idea. I think it should be done gradually. I'll move it to 15 minutes before on the NASDAQ on the next post and to 20 minutes next week and so on. The DJIA could be a 5 minute. My friend Kelly has been playing with alternate suspends to keep people on their toes. Thanks for the headsup.

It seems really hard to find many events that already have announced who is actually participating. Maybe I'm overlooking it, but have you been able to find this info? Getting them asked soon is always better than later to give more time for users to wager on them. Let me know if you have any special sites to gain good info for question creating.

Thanks for the shout. I posted the baseball questions a few days ago when I noticed letmewinplease and taternutz didnt. A couple people left good comments on them and suggested that they possibly asked further in advance instead of just one day. I agreed, and thats the reasoning for so many past couple days. Unless someone says something about wanting to create some baseball questions or for a certain team I hope to keep them going being created at least a few days in advance.
You superusers do a great service for hubdub. Do you guys have certain categories you monitor or do all of you all keep an eye on all sections? I notice you mostly flag/suspend/correct questions in politics and entertainment. No matter how it works I like it. I have commented or flagged and each time you guys have been there with an answer within minutes.

This is an example question. Under INFO it has some special settlement rules. It seems like there is an hour time frame before close. If there is I think it is a great idea.

Thank you for taking time to send me a reasoned and logical comment on my massive movie marketplace.... :)

Plz allow me to engage you in a conversation about this. Here is what I'm thinking:

1.) I feel strongly about creating markets that are interesting, require some thought, are not completely random and require more effort and imagination than just looking up a websit and getting an answer simply.

2.) I'm happy to be, and was anticipating this, to be the Poor Soul to add up these results, Yes, all 188 results for movies released during 2008. Which is a slight variance to the website that includes all movies SHOWN in 2008, including those that launched late in 2007, but were still showing.

3.) I'm also willing to forgoe any wagering myself, I know it may sound a bit twisted, but personally I would enjoy tracking the bets, even without any personal benefit.

4.) OK, maybe a little personal benefit, in the interests of full disclosure, my wife manages a theatre and me keeping up with this market for the year would be a tangible way for me to stay engaged and interested in some of the economics of her career.

5.) As mentioned there are a lot of obscure movies here, deliberately. I started with all 2008 releases and then extracted those with limited release.

6.) I cringe at the idea of buckling to what is looking like a recent trend of some of our members fly specking markets and quibbling, they seem to be enjoying finding things wrong with markets more than the process itself. Kind of like sitting watching an elaborate stage show but not allowing yourself to fully enjoy it because you had difficulty finding an optimal parking spot on the way in. C'mon peole, enjoy the site for what it is!

7.) Regarding how to consider a movie, I'm going with the genre that is listed first after the movie name in comments to determine where to put it.

In summary, I'm not loooking to cause trouble, I would be willing to personally add this all up next winter, and not wager on it myself. However, if y'all decide that I'm causing too much of a ruckus I can step back, take the void and resubmit as you've suggested. It would be a lot simpler, I admit, but not nearly as interesting I think. I chose to correspond with you here rather than comments in the hopes that you and I can talk before opening it up to the world for a squabble.

Plz let me know what you think, I won't protest your decision any further, just wanted to let you know what I was thinking.

I finally have a weekend that I don't have to work and decided to spend some time shouting out to all of my HD friends that I've been neglecting. I've enjoyed a lot of your challenges and questions, but I'm pretty sure you have a lot more time to devote to HD than I do. Having said that I _really_ enjoy everyone's challenges. Okay, as for May, I have had trouble on this front, and so I will tell you my thoughts and ask you to give me an idea of how I should go about it.
Problem: May has some BIG releases coming that will OBVIOUSLY win #1, at least for the first 3 weekends of May, then the Summer Box Office levels out and most future weekends through Aug. have some tough competition, however, Iron Man will obviously be #1, so will Narnia in its week, so will Indiana Jones in its week, but after that, it gets a little tighter.
Solutions: I have 2 ideas for how to deal with this irritating situation for the first 3 weeks of May.
1. Make it like 90% - 95% likely that the above mentioned movies will open #1 and have either no one bet or have a billion people bet and make no money.
2. Change the question from my typical: Which Movie WIll Be #1, kind of question to something like, How Much MORE will such and such make then the #2 movie, or Will such and such move make Above or Below $70 million opening weekend, or Will such make $100 million within 2 weeks, or whatever.

See the trouble I'm having with this odd 3 week period? ... Your input would be most appreciated :-D

Its been too volatile for a while -- there is a LOT of money in the market, but one 100$ bet can significantly change the odds. It seems to have a bug in it somewhere, so they closed it down to sort it out. Hopefully they can fix it w/o voidng!

Seriously though, thank you for being a calming voice in the whole debacle, you do NOT realize the good you did in there, I think it'd eventually been us calling for Satyaki's address being revealed and us sending the HubDub SWAT Team after him .... Hahahaha :-D

Hey there. Was hoping you would join us in a united front and show the admins that we won't put up with cheating. Please show your support for the strike. Send an email to Hubdub through thier contact form. Let's make this community something we can all be proud of.

So I hope those srtikers aren't govt employees

Please do not be mean, or cruel, or obscene, or anything like that, but please make it clear that this situation MUST be resolved and resolved ASAP!

A sample letter may be as simple as this (please send whatever you feel, this is just an outline):

To HubDub Administrators: In Protest of the "Satyaki" problem.
I (username) proclaim at this moment, that I will not wager another Hdollar nor create any further questions on Hubdub, until this matter is settled.
I believe that it is my right as a member of this site, to expect the highest level of integrity on the part of hubdubs administrators and that even though it is still in beta form, this does not make right the decision on your parts to allow cheaters to prosper at the expense of the rest of the hubdub community.
I believe that cheating is wrong and any known cheating must be disciplined as soon as it becomes known and not allowed to fester. This lack of ethical conduct on the part of the cheater in question is not being dealt with ethically by hubdub, therefore, I am renouncing my support of hubdub.com entirely, until a fair conclusion to this matter has been decided and acted upon up to and possibly including the removal of (Satyaki) from membership.
It is my concrete belief that the legitimacy and reputation of this entire game is at stake and I will no longer participate in a game that is "fixed" against the ethical and rules following players, and placed in the favor of unethical and rule breaking members.
I declare to you admins, that you have treated ALL legitimate hubdubbers in an unethical manner, you have disrespected those who love and support the game and have potentially fed a "gaming" environment that actually encourages cheating against the upright in this hubdub community.
Until this issue is resolved in an agreeable manner, you have lost (username) as a loyal member of this site and I will no longer sing the praises of hubdub.com to anyone, nor invite anyone I know to join, until this matter is resolved.

I do not know if that is a good letter, but I do encourage ALL members to send "A" letter to hubdub immediately, or else we are just spinning our wheels and I desperately do NOT want to lose this awesome site, especially do to a punk like (Satyaki)!!! If this was any other social networking site, he'd have been banned by now!

And then go to this link and post a protest as well and HELP the HubDub Community regain it's integrity!
