It turns out that the questino as originally phrased was impossible.

The question as asked was whether the first gay marriage in Iowa would take place on April 21. However, we have now learned that April 21 is a court holiday in Iowa, and no marriage licenses can be issued on that day.

Hence the question as originally phrased was impossible (no one can get a marriage license in Iowa on April 21), and therefore (I believe that the question should be voided).

Before we learned that the the question as phrased was impossible, the admin settled the question as "No" which I believe is incorrect (you lost H$1000 with this settlement).

I still predict whenever the market has a large upswing on the previous day of 100 or more points. Usually greedy investors will drive the market down on open with profit taking the next morning.

I am fan of Hubdub and I am a student from China who is very interested in Mathematics and Computer. Since Hubdub is so interesting, I keep wondering how it works. I am particular interested in the mechanism that you use to decide the percentage increase of a certain topic after a player makes a new bet on that topic.
For example, a player put $100 on the “Yes” side, and I suppose the equation for calculating the new percentage is:
New % =[(total amount bet on “Yes” + $100)/(total amount bet on that topic + $100) - Original%]. And I designed a program based on the above equation and I found that the outcome was different from that on Hubdub. I checked the javascript code of that webpage, which is

I studied the parameters in the above equations and I have understood how the 55.681196240513 was generated. But I still couldn’t figure out what 225.28607682925, 102669.43 and 20000 represent for. I don't wish to seem unreasonable or insensitive to some of the issues being raised by this policy. I fully understand what you guys are talking about with regard to a family member of a previously unknown. whose been victimized, being thrown into a betting pool. I think I feel differently about those who have chosen a higher profile existence on this earth to some extent. But in those cases we are still talking about individuals.

But when you start banning genocide numbers, natural disaster numbers, famine numbers, soldier and civilian fatalities, etc...then you've crossed the line into some weird form of censorship I can't accept. we have a differnt view on destry. he may very well think he's bettering the site with the way he does things. imho he's hurting the site. if people let destry get away with things (like the way he treated letme) whats froming stopping him from doing it again? i agree me going after him in the comment section wasn't the best thing to do. i'm not trying to get rid of him..i'm just trying to get him to be fair and consistent. he operates by his own set of rules, and does things no other admin does. if you confront him his reply is always..i'm trying to improve and promote the site. thats no excuse to do what he does. he sicced nigel on me. nigel and i had a conversation, and i'll handle things differntly in the future. i won't sacrafice my morals for the sake of using the site. if in the future i see people being treated unfairly, settlements made unfairly, an admin (or anybody else) behaving the way destry does i'll do what i can to fix it. if it gets me banned from the site then so be it. last i heard anything out of lucidstates he was busy with church, work, and i think he's chasing a girl. Lake Constance is a beautiful area like the rest of Switzerland. Have been to Switzerland 5 or 6 times hiking and sking. My last trip was last year. Was in nothern Italy this year. Congrats on the new baby. Kids are great.

Logistics question:

Short version: How do I manually find unmet challenges & can it be easier to look up?

Long version: As I am sure you do to a far higher degree than I, I am often hammered with challenges. This happens to the degree that I spend significant amounts of time completely ignoring them & other times looking at them exclusively.

Because of "the way I roll" I have times with all my worth invested (getting challenges I can't meet without cashing out of a current position) but I also end up with occasional large piles of cash that need to be reinvested such as end-of-month or certain events. Example: yesterday/today being the MLB All-star break, I had a lot of baseball questions with positions that were decided "by the all-star break".

I haven't looked through everything everywhere but it seems I have 2 options when it comes to meeting challenges; either react to the bar that shows up across the top of the initial screen when I login or go hunting through e-mails for challenges I didn't accept when they initially came in.

My question is: Could we have a URL in a place that makes it simple to go to challenges that have not been met that does not go away once we navigate away from that page?

I'm certain that there are many things more important, but I wanted to put this on the radar so it might get accomplished at some point - or maybe I could be directed to the place I have somehow managed to miss thus far. :)

Finally I have a weekend that I don't have to work, so I thought I'd spend some time shouting to all my HD friends that I have neglected recently.

I don't feel that we should need to be involved with hours and/or days and/or sometimes weeks of arguments over a particular question. So, I didn't take it further...but I am sure that the offer is still open, if you would want to pursue it...

We actually discussed this one at length and the consensus was to void it. The problem was the background asks “How many of the passengers will be killed by this illness in total, either on the train, or in hospital?” however is has now been reported that there wasn’t one illness but two unrelated illnesses therefore to settle as one would be misleading. Unfortunately we can’t un-void questions at the moment. However we could escalate it to get satisfaction for discussion to see if there is agreement to the course we took.



On the question of notification unfortunately the category editors don’t yet have the ability to inform users by email that a question has been voided. That is still to be developed.

I posted the following comment on this prediction yesterday and emailed it to hubdub. I haven't had an answer as yet:

"The question is:
"How many of the passengers will be killed by this illness in total, either on the train, or in hospital?"

The answer was clearly: ONE. What is the problem here and why was this question voided? There was always a doubt from the beginning of this prediction as to whether there was or was not a "mystery illness" and whether or not the illnesses were related. That was in the news clippings cited as a part of the history of the question. Why was the question voided? It is my opinion that hubdub has made a mistake on this one and should settle the question as ONE PASSENGER died. "

Can you please clear this up for us? (It's time for Solomon to carve up another baby).

Thanks for the advice and tips to making better question. I usually stick to sports which is fairly easy to make questions about.
After seeing Scarlett Johansson was releasing music album this month and how famous she is I thought it deserved a hubdub question.
After making question I thought you would be best to ask advice from regarding it. Thanks for replying, and I totally agree with you suggestions.
If my question gets voided, I hope you will make a better, more informed question about it.
OK I must admit I am a bit biased. I love Scarlett Johansson and think she is super sexy, so yeah I want to see her as often as possible in hubdub questions.

I was watching CTV newsnet on TV this afternoon. They had a nice report showing all the cars nicely lined up in the impound. It took me some googling but I eventually translated a page that I think was of the Zurich police department. Sometimes I prefer to let the hubdubbers do the research...hehehe.

Ontario Canada recently passed a law that would have seized the cars if it had happened here. I'm not entirely sure but I think they make the owner watch as it crushed.

I never really knew how the market works here at hubdub.
Ever since I began here I just bet if I saw question I thought I knew the probable outcome of or bet if I was getting great % odds to do so.
Your comment kinda cleared things up a bit for me.
I must also add, I love your questions about the #1 billboard spot. I always find myself wagering on the bottom 3 options because the odds are great. It has yet to pay off, but when it finally does its gonna be awfully nice payout.

Oh, dear one- I have told you I have 2 left feet when it comes to picking songs.. See? I can't even use a good analogy!! Now, for movies and sports I am blindly pulling winning rabbits out of the hat like mad! But you write a great question with good details and background- And not even in your native tongue- Kadoos to Kruijs!!!!

Actually I can't hold a real conversation in Dutch (nor afrikaans lol). Unless it goes something like this: "Hoi Kruis, hoe bent je?" - "Ik ben fijn, en jij?" - "Ik ook, dank je wel". If there's much more than that, I either don't know the words or I don't know how to conjugate the verbs, etc. But I'm always willing to learn. When I say something the wrong way I'd rather someone tell me the right way, it doesn't hurt my feelings.

afrikaans is really a mess, unfortunately. It is VERY gutteral and sounds terrible. A very few radio announcers could do something with it, and of course, the educated tried hard with it...but...what I wrote doesn't look very pretty, does it?

With so few people speaking this language, you will be surprised to know that afrikaaners LAUGH at you for trying to learn their language, RATHER than help you when you show interest...I have found that in most countries, native language speakers will assist you if you make any effort at all...but not with afrikaans...

I live in California, in the L.A. area. Ik ken maar een beetje nederlands. I learned a little mostly from chatting with Dutch people while playing online games. One thing I've noticed is that Dutch speakers have very good knowledge of English, more so than most Europeans I think. I'm always impressed by them.

That's NOT Dutch: it's Afrikaans! double-dutch to some, but Afrikaans to the boere, man...Have you ever been to Suid Afrika? Of course, you fly Suid Afrikaanse Lugdiens! Sadly, I am forgetting what Afrikaans I knew. Ek vergiet baie...And as awful as what I wrote sounded, that is EXACTLY how they said it...and yes, it would sound every bit as bad as it looks. It certainly takes the dignity and self-respect out of Dutch. It's very much like listening to southerners slaughter The President's English.

YOUR English is excellent, well-written, colourful, and your presentation is far better than most hubdubbers. Most Americans will miss that English is your tweede taal. However, this doesn't surprise me. In my experience, the Dutch are a very accomplished nationality in speaking multiple languages, and I admire the Dutch.

Believe it or not, I don't regard myself as an English language expert or professor. I did teach English at the beginning of my career for a very few years in French Quebec, French West Africa, and the Middle East. So long ago. For some funny reason, I seem to be one of the few here that gets irritated when I see gross spelling and grammatical errors connected to news. Would we want to read a newspaper with so many errors?

You wondered why the English spellcheck would not catch the scrapping/scraping error. Actually, it was neither your fault not spellcheck's fault, and I appreciate your pointing this out to me. BOTH are good English words, with two different meanings. Spellcheck would recognize both as correct. I want to keep this in mind for the future...
